High School Proms

Not that I have an interest in high school proms (insert joke here), but I heard that Bridgeport's prom will be in some Fort Worth hotel this year. Since I really haven't kept up with it, has this been going on for a while? Do other Wise County schools venture off into the Big City as well? I remember Decatur having a prom in north Fort Worth in the early 1990s and I vaguely remember a news story about them trashing the hotel. But I could be wrong. Enlighten me.

We trashed the Sandpiper in Fort Worth in 1989 and then the Decatur School Board, in their infinite wisdom, decided that it was a better idea to have the 1990 Decatur junior/senior prom at the National Guard Armory. After we have had all the fun we could stand at the armory (about 30 minutes' worth), we all traveled to Denton for some real prom-night fun - drinking beer, getting naked, and trashing the Sheraton. Fun times.

The Sandpiper by Meacham Field is hardly a "hotel", even by Wise County standards. If we would have trashed it, it would have improved the property value.

sand piper, north fort worth. late 80's early 90's. I think they refused to allow anyone from decatur to stay there for awhile.

Ah, the ol' line dance...that is usually where all the fat chicks and hags get their time on the dance floor - although there are a couple of girls in that picture that I would probably tap.

I don't know what the school does now, but I can tell you the '77 Decatur Jr./Sr. Banquet (we couldn't have a "Prom", because dancing would be involved and the Baptists would have raised a stink) was held at the Green Oaks Inn in Fort Worth. The '78 Jr./Sr. Banquet (still no dancing allowed) was held in Denton at NTSU. At that time, the only other place in Decatur we could have held the "banquet" would have been the Women's Building at the Rodeo Grounds. That, of course, was reserved for the Football Banquet in the fall and the All Sports (other than football of course) Banquet in the spring. Of course, there was no dancing at those events either. As you might imagine, a few cold beers were consumed before and after those Jr./Sr. Banquets by many of us, which makes me wonder why we were ever allowed to have them so far from home.

In '92 and '93 we decided that TCJC (yep, that's Tarrant County Junior College) would be the height of elegance. And no sir, it was not. And yes sir, we stormed the Sandpiper as well. And yes, my husband (big city) still laughs at that story.

In other words, Barry, it's been going on for some time now!

Alvord Junior/Senior prom in 2001 was at the Embassy Suites next to the Bass Pro Shop in Grapevine. The guys really enjoyed this because they all went and hung out at the Bass Pro Shop.

10:14 has class! The town of 5 and 1 cat, Jeterville, is classier than the armory, TCJC, or the Crackpiper any day.

DHS did TCJC followed by the "Sandbagger" for my jr and sr proms; after the senior one (1992), there was furniture and broken glass (mostly wine cooler bottles) in the pool, Funyuns in all the carpeting, and a big ol' write-up in the Mess ... good times.

If you trashsed the Sandpiper , you wasted your hard earned money!

Wise County Park with Chico and Bridgeport fighting for tables and camping rights, Chico was always tough and had the best camp fires
