Is It Racist To Chant "USA! USA!" . . .

. . . at a high school basketball opponent when the other school just happens to be 96% Hispanic?

(I'm glad for this small typeface because I wouldn't want anyone to know that I thought this was kind of a funny bit.)

Well, that's just bizarro world political correctness! I believe now I can say I've heard everything.
Are we supposed to believe that those kids - presumably US citizens, but they do live here either way - felt it was an insult to hear the name of their country of residence being chanted at them? Forget the intent, the apologies are being made solely to soothe the hurt feelings of the "victims".

If they actually do take offense at the chant, doesn't that mean the chant is justified?

Political correctness run amuck!

I do find it funny, but let's not kid ourselves. The chant "USA" was being used b/c they knew they couldn't call the other team "Mexicans" or some other slang term.

Thought crime, how dare them.

Not. At. All.

is it okay to chant "I'm gay and I have rights"

Not allowed to be a proud AMERICAN but allowed to be a proud MEXICAN

Obviously yet another hate crime.

If they took offense, it was because they were not Americans. How dare a public organization repremand anyone for showing pride in our country. And how dare they presume to know what was intended. More of that is what we have to look forward to in another Obama administration.

If they didn't like it, they can always go back to "Mexico -Mexico!"

Thanks BG!! Keep spreading the hate!

Beaners don't play basketball they play a game called football with a round white ball in a sticker patch.

What the story doesn't tell you is that the other team began the incident by chanting "Mexico." In return, the host school replied with, "USA."

Pretty nice how the liberal media left that little nugget out of the story. It makes more shocking to think that they were just picking on the mostly Hispanic team.

HOW EASY IS IT TO GO THRU LIFE BASING ALL YOUR BELIEFS AND HATE SOLEY ON THE COLOR OR POLITICAL LEANINGS OF THE REST OF THE WORLD.I DONT KNOW THE COMPLAINERS,OR HOPE I DONT,BUT WOULD BET PRETTY GOOD ODDS THEY HAVENT VOTED IN A VERY LONG TIME,THEY JUST COMPLAIN.
THE IDEA THAT WE CANT GET ANOTHER CONSERVATIVE ELECTED MAY BE TRUE IF WE CONTINUE TO LET ABORTION AND GAY RIGHTS DEFINE OUR PARTY,THEY HAVE NO PLACE IN THE POLITICAL DISCUSSION.
CONSERTIVES HAVE ALWAYS STOOD FOR SMALLER GOV. AND LESS FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY.THAT IS A LONG WAY FROM DECIDING WHO SHOULD MARRY AND WHOS DAUGHTER,WIFE,OR MOTHER SEES A REASON TO TERMINATE A PREGNANCY.I PRAY NO ONE I LOVE EVER HAS TO MAKE THAT DECISION BUT IF THE DO I DONT WANT A DEM.OR CONSERTIVE DECIDING IT FOR THEM.
YOU WANNA HATE,GO AHEAD,YOUR LIFE WILL CONTINUE TO BE AS DEPRAVED AND SAD AS YOU HAVE COME TO EXPECT.

Where do the fathers rights come in? It takes two. Why should it be only the womans choice? I think abortion should be stopped until all the parties involved have a say.

Racist? No. Immature? Definitely. The "Ole, Ole, Ole" football song by the Bouncing Souls would have been a much more clever bit by those kids.

Andy, why are you yelling? You're a foot from me.

Andy needs to have his hearing checked. That may be why he is shouting. Can't hear himself. Or, maybe, just needs stronger glasses to hear better with.

way to go, Sexy Tex, but the woman is the one that has to endure the pain of the result. The other party is just the one that gets his rocks off. Maybe you know what that is like, maybe not.

I KNOW I AM ONLY A FOOT FROM YOU BUT DONT KNOW WHO IS LISTENING.

As usual, most of you miss the point here. The Hispanic kids on the basketball team are all American citizens. The parents at that school are Taxpayers. Some of the parents (Hispanic by the way) are members of the US Military. American, through and through. Period.

Alamo Heights is a rich, mostly white area of San Antonio (think Highland Park).

The "USA...USA" chant was an attempt to paint the basketball players, team, and school as being non-American, just because they happen to be Hispanic. (Hmm..making a judgment about someone based solely on their skin color is called...?) That is wrong. The school rightly stopped them and demanded apologies.

The intent of the Alamo Heights kids was to demean and insult. We try to discourage that in our society, as we should.

We're talking about teaching kids to be respectful of other kids. This is not a political matter. It's not about whether we are PC or not. It's simply a matter of teaching kids that we don't want them to try to insult other kids, especially when doing so they might be seen as representing their city or school.

If the other students were chanting, "Mexico," does your argument still stand. I didn't see the event take place, but if that is the case then why are the students chanting USA the only ones to apologize?

Anonymous said...

It's wrong to make someone else apologize because you feel guilty.

I can give you the Live, Local and Late Breaking report that Alamo Heights fans went with the Bouncing Souls' "Ole" chorus in their Thursday night loss in Austin to Dallas Kimball. Consider me the LL Travis County bureau through Sunday. After that, you're on your own.
