An excerpt:
Not only is Coppell flying flags at half mast at city facilities to mark the death of Mayor Jayne Peters, who shot her daughter and then herself Tuesday night: The city is bragging about it, according to this morning's story in The Dallas Morning News. A city spokesperson told reporter Brandon Formby: "She did a lot for this community, and that's simply what we're recognizing, that our head of state has passed."
But in the wake of disclosure of a city investigation into the late mayor's expense account, we need to amend the spokesperson's statement in order to make it fully accurate: Coppell is honoring the death of its kid-killing, suicide-committing, possible embezzler mayor.

Weren't we flying our flags at half staff recently when a distinguished past member of the KKK and US Senate passed away recently?
I'd thought, for sure, Barry would know the difference between an elected official who murdered their child and a city employee whose child was a cop killer. I'm pretty sure, when a city honors a dead elected official, the city doesn't take into account the circumstances surrounding the cause of death. I've never heard of any city officially honoring the dead child of a city official much less honoring a dead kid who murdered a cop.
3:17, So true. Drive through West Virginia and everything is named after Robert Byrd but yet a building on the UT campus had to be renamed because of the man that it was named for was a past member of the KKK. It sure gets frustrating pointing out the hypocrisy of the liberal weenies.
Propagandist - you so missed the point.
The City of Coppell is walking a fine line. They want to honor this woman for all that she has done for the city, just as they would if any city official did.
No matter which way they went on this, someone would be mad. You would have the group mad that she was ignored and you know have the group mad that she was honored.
My opinion (for what it's worth here): flags should not have been lowered in either case.
Moral and values are more trivial everyday. Sad.
Maybe flags and nationalities are outdated and archaic and we should just get rid of them.
4:37 - If that's what you think then you're the one who missed my point. Take a few more tries at reading my first comment or have someone explain it to you and maybe you'll get it.
Not to take away from this story but they are gone and all the bashing wont help.Look at this video and understand.

4:09 -
It would only be hypocricy if the same people in control of something named after Robert Byrd were also in control of the name of buildings at UT.
The dorm on the UT campus didn't HAVE TO be renamed, as you alleged; the current UT adminstration and Regents CHOSE to rename the dorm; they CHOSE to quit honoring Simkins. They have nothing to do with anything named after Robert Byrd.
I am quite proud of UT. Better late than never. Most southern universities have refused to change the name in similar situations. It's not hypocricy, 4:09, it's called differences of opinion. We have that, you know, even among liberal academia.
so post about Arizona and then my link will be published its not about me ya liberal pussy
8:49, We can all have opinions but the fact that one man is honored and the other is erased from history for basically the same association with a hate group cannot be called anything other than hypocrisy no matter that "the same people" weren't in control of the building at UT. I am also proud of UT and am ashamed that thenthitive liberal weenies buckled under pressure which is what they always do.
1:49 - I am proud that UT changed the name of the dorm. 1954, when the dorm was named, was the same year that Brown v. Board of Education (school desgregation) was decided. UT was one of the schools that FOUGHT that decision.
Happily, things have changed in 50+ years, & this administration, most of the students, faculty, and alumni no longer want to honor Simkins with a dorm named after him. Simkins was not just a member of KKK - he actively campaigned against desegregation and promoted the inferiority of blacks in speeches and actions. If it's 2010 & you know that, why would you continue to honor him by having a dorm named after him? You call it "buckling under pressure," I call it doing the right thing; I call it stepping up to the plate & being a leader in doing the right thing, since when this issue has come up at other southern universities, they almost always leave the name as is. In my opinion, those are the ones that buckle under pressure. No doubt about it the values of the KKK are abhorrent to most of us.
ANd I don't believe the argument that some have that this is trying to change history. The history will always be that that dorm was named Simkins for 50+ years - far too long - but that finally in 2010, UT changed that. AS I said before, better late than never. But in their defense for the slow action, only recently has there been a research of the man and the extent of his beliefs resurfaced.
And one more point, hypocrisy is "pretending to hold beliefs, opinions, values or standards that one does not actually hold."
I don't think anyone could argue that UT only pretends to be against KKK, segregation, and all that implies; they are not being hypocritical; it's their true belief & value. In this instance they can do something about it & change a name. In the Byrd example, they have no say.
Your argument of hypocrisy seems to imply that there is just one "liberal weenie" so that if one liberal acts differently than another liberal, all liberals are being hypocritical.
When you say, "liberal weenies are being hypocritical because UT changed the name of their dorm named after a radical KKK member, but there are Robert Byrd memorials everywhere," do you not understand that you are talking about different individuals, varying areas of influence, & different actions at different times and places?
When a conservative preacher cheats on his wife, does that make the whole congregation hypocrites in regard to their marriage?
Hook 'em.
9:56 here i apoligize i had a lil too much sauce last night :)
SO if ya blow your kids head off then we will fly our flag at 1/2 staff
8:49
Hypocrisy can only exist when one group, or individual, applies different standards to the same situation. Two groups with different actions does not constitute hypocrisy. That is simply a difference betwen two groups.
The way i see it, Coppell is honoring the woman that was their mayor, not a woman who apparently was so despondent she took lives. They are respecting the office of mayor.
How tragic that she and her daughter could not get beyond the death of the husband/father. Money issues also make you do crazy things.
Has anyone even thought how sad it was that this woman lost her husband to a long and most likely expensive illness. She was grieving and left with a teenage daughter to raise who apparently knew of her mothers financial problems by her lying about school. And that she felt she had no where to turn to get help but to kill her daughter and herself. That is too sad. If only she would have asked for help. It seemed she was well thought of and probably many would have helped her.
There will be alot in this case we will never know or even begin to understand her state of mind. Don't be too judgemental for what would you have really done in her shoes? IT just sad she felt so much desperation to do such a horrible thing to her daughter and herself.
12:49 the 1st thing I would do is sell that big ass house and stop putting on a show.
I have brother that let his wife talk him into living like that.
me everything is paid for its not much but it's paid for.
Let the one without sin cast the first stone.
I think there might be a nigger in the wood pile.
"Thou shalt all cast stones no matter the sin, thine own blood will soon be spilt as well." II Melechai 13:12
Prop'y, high-five. I get it.
And Coppell should have their hands slapped. Good grief -- honoring a Mayor who may have abused her office? Honoring a Mayor who was a murderer? What a complete show of disrespect for a position of leadership in a community.
Coppell's lost it and I'd bet they'd love to take that flag down and erase the oops....except doing so would be a public admittance of the colossal blunder.
6:12 Let's start the wood pile on fire.
It'd be purdy funny if that dead lady's husband was named Dick Peters.
