This one seems pretty routine. Two prior misdemeanor DWI convictions. Eligible for probation from the jury if convicted.But there is a hitch: The defendant doesn't speak English. So what we have is an interpreter (guy in tan) speaking in Spanish into a cup looking contraption that the defendant can hear via an earpiece.

Probably guilty but he doesn't stand a snowballs chance in hell even if the evidence is in his favor. WC folks don't take too kindly to non English speakers.
It's not racist to comment on the ethnic makeup of the jury, especially if the defendant speaks a different language than everybody on the jury. I think it says more about registered voters in this county if the defense team couldn't seat any hispanic jury members

If the offense was within 4 days of a payday, he's guilty. (if he gets paid weekly)
If you live here there is NO excuse not to speak English. So many opportunities are given to learn the language, if it just from your kids going to school. I'm shocked when I go to the post office and so many people sending money to Mexico take their kids or grandkids with them to get stamps. So if you wind up in court, you may have to depend on someone other than a family member!

(1) I have to question how an all white jury can represent a jury of his peers!?
(2) Why are the people in the USA so stubborn about other languages? If you live in Texas you should at least know some Spanish! Other countries' citizens know SEVERAL different languages. Americans are so lazy they refuse to be bothered with trying to learn a second language. As American citizens we have the intelligence and the resources to learn any languages we want to but those resources are seldom used. And how do you know how long a legal alien has been in the states? Don't assume that just because they are older that they have been here for years. It might just be that those people taking their grandkids to the post office to ask for stamps haven't been here long enough to grasp the language. Not to mention, if you moved to another country and were attempting to learn their language, how bold would you be when speaking to strangers in public? Probably not very, especially if someone had laughed at you or harassed you about it in the past. Get over your language barriers people! Get over yourself.
Is he here legally? If not why are we wasting time and money. They needed at least one Hispanic on the jury so they can't say it wasn't a jury of his peers.

4:41, It probably translates the same as conservative knuckle-head. I'm not sure how being unafraid of culture makes me a Liberal, but I'm certainly not ashamed of the label. I just want to know how people in the U.S. can expect foreign people to learn a language that we ourselves can't even master. There are very few Americans who speak proper English...and I bet you aren't one of them. I certainly don't speak it well enough to be criticizing someone else trying to learn it.

Some questions. What are requirements for citizenship in the U.S.? Don't you have to be able to speak English? (I'm going to assume that is a prerequisite...I know assuming is dangerous). They should start teaching foreign languages in about the 1st grade when the kids can learn it easier.
Go to Mexico and see how many Mexicans speak English. We go there to spend money and they still won't learn english, they come here and take money and they still won't learn english.

I don't think that it should matter whether he is Mexican, English, German or whatever, if he has had 2 DWI's, then the third one should get him sent somewhere, jail or back to Mexico. And do you thing that if I moved to Mexico, that they would learn English for me. And aside from that most of them can speak (or at the least understand English), and if you do not believe that, tell them something that they did not want to hear.
