I have had this happen to me!! In a wreck you are not allowed to privately have your car towed. You have to accept whoever is on call, and pay whatever they decide to charge! Totally unfair... So, to me this is a splendid change- not that I plan on anymore wrecks.
I think what 'ol sexy Rexy is trying to do is to stop a certain wrecker service, that I won't call by name, from loading your vehicle and then demanding an inflated rate payment in cash at that very second or he will impound your car until payed, also at an inflated rate. Have heard more than one story abiout this from various different sources that all end the same. Wait till he has you loaded then bend you over.
Tap the breaks 8:48. Why should any government be charged less for services that an individual should have to pay?
Also, please clarify. Is it what the city is charged for calling a wrecker to move an illegally parked vehicle? and is that charge passed to the owner of the vehicle?
I love the line, "...in the past, wide variations in charges for similar services had created some problems." Sounds similar to the health care system.
How is this limiting their profits? This is just setting a limit of what they can charge for work with accidents and things. All cities have a rule like this.
As someone mentioned earlier, if you call individually, then they can charge whatever amount that they think they can get. If you call someone and they quote you a huge amount, then go somewhere else. If you don't get a quote before the wrecker loads you, then you pay whatever the wrecker operator wants to charge. Should have gotten a quote first.
When you are in a wreck you are in no position to keep crooks from taking advantage of the situation and charging more than they do on a day to day basis. It cost me less to hire a wrecker to come all the way to Dallas and tow my truck, that had a water pump go out, back to Wise County than it did when I had the misfortune of having a trafic accident in Decatur and required a tow of less than a mile.
Nobody is making anyone even use a wrecker service, unlike Obamacare forcing everyone with a breath to purchase health insurance or else all the wrath of the IRS will come down on you!
I know that during the ice storms the wreckers were out in force and one out of Chico would not rescue folks who were stranded and freezing unless they paid $75 bucks before they would pull them out..they left many people out in the cold, I heard this over and over on the scanner. that's highway robbery!
They ought to regulate fees for forced towing by police. It is not a buyer/customer situation where the person needing a tow is in the arms length relationship with the tower. If the customer can choose, then no regulation is needed, but where it is based on government action, they damn sure better regulate those car thieves.
Isn't requiring everyone that lives/breathes in America own health insurance almost the same as everyone that drives in America to have Liability Insurance? Isn't the idea similar in that the Liability Insurance prevents the cost of damage from being past onto the party not at fault.
Following that reasoning, if someone doesn't have health coverage, doesn't that cost get past onto those that are not at fault?
Seems like the only difference is that the only people that fall under these rules breathe and the only ones that fall under the auto liability law drive.
In favor of totally unregulated pricing? OK, I'm with the electric company. Give me $10,000 right now and then every month hereafter, it's the new price per month of electricity. All electric companies are going to this price. If you don't like it, don't buy it!!!!
Surprised to see so many argue that it's "socialist" to have the government set rates even after several people mentioned that the GOVERNMENT (i.e. police) will not allow you to pick WHO you want to tow your car after an accident.
You don't think there is some backroom deals going on here as well? The owners of some of the larger wrecker companies are multi-millionaires and are regular donors to political campaigns...for a reason.
Sure, don't regulate what they charge in the OPEN market, but you need to protect people from getting charged $400 tow that should only be $75.
1:18 - Not very Christian of you to say that you do NOT have to have medical care, if you are sick and cannot pay for it. Sounds like the dollar is Golden Calf. Just want to point out a few of the Beatitudes from St. Matthew: Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. (Verse 7) Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God. (Verse 8) Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. (Verse 9) Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 10)

Tap the breaks there buddy, this just means it sets standards for what the city is charged for wrecker service.
If you individually call a wrecker they can quote you what the market will bear.

I have only dealt with one wrecker service in town. Mr. Grundy charged a fair price and treated me nice!
Hey Ernest T:
Basic business lesson - When you limit the amount of revenue someone can collect.....You've limited the amount of profit they can make.
There are only two components in profit: revenue and expenses.
When you restrict either - you've restricted profit.

Decatur City Council ? Who is even on it?
I'm thinkin' Baby Killers!
I think we all know Gary Howard would never do nothing like that...???
1:08, How did you know I was refering to him this morning?????? You're right,of course.
Well 1:29, I just kinda figured since the only other two in town are good people!!!

857 you do get to choose which wrecker, you're not forced to take the one on rotation, if you don't believe me call wise sheriff office.

5:23 - you're pretty close (not that Wise Co libertarians will get it).
5:23,
You do not HAVE to drive.
You cannot be forced to buy something in the US simply because you are living.
And you do NOT have to have medical care, if you are sick and cannot pay for it.
Stupid Dims.
