The Campaign For DA

Random High Brow Thought

After being inundated all week long with news about the NFL Hall of Fame Induction ceremony (primarily of Troy Aikman but also of Rayfield Wright), this thought pops into my mind: What an incredibly shallow society we are. There are people all over America, Texas, and Wise County that bust their butts for the betterment of mankind. Whether they be social workers, teachers, doctors, lawyers (yeah, some of us spend a ton of time helping the poor), pastors, CPS workers, - and the list goes on and on - we will give national TV and radio coverage, as well as multi-page newspaper spreads, to someone that . . . uh . . .played football very well. That's what we honor. That's what we cherish. And, hey, I'm a football fan.

I'm a football fan, too, and I agree 100%, Barry. I don't think anyone could have said it better.

Question is.....what can each of us do to make a difference, change this and be part of the solution?

Don't watch football if you don't want to. Give away all your money and possessions to a poor person if you want to. If everybody did that, then we would all be starving and then there would not be this problem of well off people feeling bad about others that have made, directly or indirectly, the choice to be poor. Hey, so what if you scrabbled your way to a decent living through hard work, summer jobs, focusing on school work, getting up early each morning, saving...there are others that don't believe in that. They believe in doing nothing. And so just give them what you have and join them.

Tip for the day. If you have absolutely no money, and you live in the middle of a thousand square miles of desert, and six of your children, your dog, whatever goats you had, and most of your neighbors have died of starvation or disease....DON'T HAVE ANOTHER BABY. Please!!!! There are only so many Angelina Jolies that are able to bail you out.

Very well said Barry. Send this one to all school board members for their consideration of priorities too - sports in general, football specifically.

9:32 asked the really good question. What can we do?

Just keep waving a little flag for other things like education, the arts, humanitarian efforts.

And be in the minority.

But be trying.

Today's front page of the ST:

Four items related to sports:

1. Who's next for the Hall? - (top of the page)
2. Tiger reaches the big 5-0.
3. The cowboys are in Seattle, etc.
4. The Rangers return for a six-game, etc.

And so it goes.

I know what you're saying, and I agree to an extent. However, Football is entertainment, and it takes our mind off the everyday turmoil in our world.

9:04 - you hit the nail on the head. Football is entertainment.

Certainly a good way to view the game, rather than an obsession or a religion.

The large percentage of blog space on here concerns sports too.

Yeah, yeah, I know - it's Barry's blog.

Don't hit me - I wear glasses.

He probably does too, considering his age now.

I know exactly what you're saying. There are so many precious souls who suffer every single day. All the while, someone like mzchief is allowed to walk the earth.

It's just not right.

7:00 AM: Reporting like that is likely why we still have Americans who think we found WMDs in Iraq.

Help someone every day.

Anon 10:00:
And what exactly gives you the right to walk the earth??
Whatever you have against mzchief, get over it. I, for one, am sick of reading about it.

Have a great day!!

10:00 - good gosh - from football to problems with mzchief.

Hey TxSheehan, In another post you admitted Sadaam had used WMD's on his own people and now you spew he didn't. Most people believe he did because we saw the pictures of dead Kurds that were gassed. I know what you are going to say. Sadaam killed them with slingshots. Your hypocricy is hysterical.

why do poor people keep having kids? Please stop. I can't afford your children.

Barry - I certainly want to believe your comment on attorneys busting their butt for the poor.

In your case (and knowing you as I do) I believe you are truthful when it comes to your actions. However, in MOST cases I firmly believe that an attorney would help the poor and infirmed to find food and medical assistance for the low low everyday special price of $300 per hour (with a minimum $5000 retainer paid in advance).

They continue to have kids because they only have that one thing to do for entertainment.

I have always considered myself to be fairminded and certainly not prejudice however I recently had an occasion to sit in an office which was just across from the Wise County Medical Mission office where free medical attention is given on a voluntary basis by local doctors. What I saw was a parade of pregnant mexican women coming and going to recieve this free medical attention. Please make no mistake -- the doctors are getting their money -- their getting it from you and I because for those of us who pay -- it costs $200 every time you go.

The very next day on Friday (tax-free), I was at the mall in Grapevine with the other 42 million people (my mistake) and I felt like I was in Mexico City -- every Mexican female was 7 months pregnant and had 4 others under the age of 7 in tow. This is really becoming absurd.

I agree ANON 2:37

We give them an inch they will take a mile and we let them.

Grapevine Mills has been Mexico City a year after it opened.

I'm not sure, but I believe many illegal immigrants think if they have a baby here, they have a better chance of staying. Right? Then having 2 or 6 more makes it even better. There's something wrong here.

greta said...

It is not just the Mexicans, look around at all the trailer trash that is living on welfare.

And so it goes...the same stupid people saying the same stupid shit.

Anon 10:53

Why don't you enlighten us with the breakthrough thought leadership of a social worker?

If we are all stupid people -- tell us how you would deal with the explosion of illegal immigrants exploiting every free service -- all offered at the expense of the rest of us?

rr at 11:02 - I'm with you on this one (hard to admit).
