Now I'm Awake

The baby drowing Andrea Yates is on trial again (her first conviction was reversed after a government witness made up some crazy story about how Yates was pretty much following a plot she learned on Law and Order.). I can think of three women who have recently been successful using the insanity defense. Being too lazy at this moment to research their names, there was (1) the kill my kids in the rock garden lady in East Texas, (2) the cut off my baby's arms lady in Collin County, and (3) I'm pretty sure there was a young hispanic lady, also in Collin County, that killed her three year with a knife. Yates (before the conviction was reveresed), was the only high profile defendant I can think of to have that defense rejected. Her lawyer was George Parnham the first time. She's using him again. Let me begin a George Parnham rant . . . I think he is one odd (and full of himself) guy. Check out his web site - it has this touchy feely music in the background and when you first enter, up pops a quote from Abraham Lincoln, then one from the Magna Carta, and then one from . . . omg . . . George Parnham! Lincoln, the Magna Carta and Parnham? And then a second quote pops up from Parnham: "If we do our jobs correctly, an innocent person may be spared punishment he doesn't deserve." What the hell? You might be able to get an innocent person off? That's your selling point? And then click on his list of "clients". His first one is Andrea Yates (that's not going too well) and then the second one is Clara Harris! You might remember that Harris ran over her sorry husband with a vehicle in a hotel parking lot after she caught him having an affair. She got 20 years in prison! (Ok, I'm done. I think something took over my body for a second.)

Obviously some people equate high profile with success just as others equate quality with high price. Hmmmmm....Parnham sounds quite a bit like Paris Hilton WITHOUT the ah...ah...uh talent.

Yates is insane for using George again! Yates was driven to insanity by an over-bearing husband and mother-in-law who made her home school too many children in a small trailer house. The weird preacher didn't help either! The husband was the one she should have taken out like Harris did when she ran over and backed up and ran over her two-timing dentist husband who abused her!

What a sorry lawyer!!! No clarity at all!

WOW 10:11 a.m.!!! I agree totally!!! She was definitely insane - driven there by her husband and hormone imbalance. I feel terribly sorry for her.

I doubt her husband held a gun to her head to make her have babies...I don't care what "drove" her to do what she did...those children didn't deserve that and she deserves the death penalty. She had a choice...she could have just left...gone somewhere and changed her identity, if she was feeling depressed or trapped or whatever...anything but murdering those children. I hope she gets what she deserves. And, by the way...isn't anyone who would take another person's life temporarily "insane"?!?! That defense is used way too much these days.

dnitcNOW, just who is paying the tab for this high profile shyster? I know--the more publicity, the more $$$ raked in.

1:31, it is easy to see that you have never had a family member who suffers from Mental Illness, I have. You need to realize, she "thought" she was saving her children.
Yes, what she did was horrific, but she was definately insane.

OK, I can see insane for maybe one or two of them, but don't you think after watching yourself murder two of your children something inside you would go..."hello..these are my children"! I don't think there is anything to talk about...why drag it out! Lock her ass up!

I am terribly torn on this. Having had a case of PPD after having my children I understand the "bad thougts" that jump into your head - they are terribly frightening and you do wonder if you have lost your mind because sane people don't imagine hurting their children. It was a wild jump from my "normal" well adjusted, family and community minded self to these "crazy thoughts."

That said - the image of her chasing her oldest down and drowing him while he FOUGHT FOR HIS LIFE just pushes me over the edge - at what point did she not wake up and say "what the hell did I just do." Thoughts are one thing - actions another.

She was insane - she was hearing voices - and it was premeditated - and it was horrible. I am thankful I am not on the jury.

I think her husband got off free - I do feel he had some responsibility in protecting his children. He will have to live w/that guilt.
