So we have today's version of the Scarlett Letter: the list of people registering as sex offenders.
Great idea, right?
Well some brilliant guy in the northeast decided to kill two people he saw on the list (before blowing his own brains out).
"Great!" you say. "We should kill all of them!" Right?
Think again: One of the victims, 24-year-old William Elliott, was convicted four years ago of having sex with a girlfriend who was only days away from her 16th birthday.

20 Years old and 15 years old. Even if the nitpickers say 16, still sex wtih a minor. Do the crime, do the time and pay the piper. The guy didn't deserve a vigilante killing though.
This is the reason that the Sex Offender laws need to be revised. But of course they will not ever think of it, as it is not a very political move.
Like most laws, they are black and white and no room for real life circumstance.
I knew an 18 year old high school student - a good student too, who had sex with a 15 year old girl who had 'been around' - more of a slut than any girl I ever knew. They got caught, so she hollared rape. She was not upset, shaken or anything else. EVERYONE knew it was NOT rape. This boy had to go to alternative school to graduate and register as a sex offender. This was about 10 years ago and this guy is still on the list. What she did changed this kid's life.
There are different types of sex offenders - some that are really sick and do horrible things. Then there are those who cross a thin line. They are all recognized the same way.
A movie I just watched last night is a good mind opener on the way sex offenders are treated. It is called "The Woodsman" with Kevin Bacon. This movie made me see how NOT black and white this issue is.
Another thing to consider is this. Women/girls have been having consentual sex forever. Only a couple generations ago, women/girls were getting married at 14/15/16 and no one ever thought anything about it. You were thought to be an old maid at 18/19. Back then many girls waiting until marriage to have sex for religious/moral reasons. Truth is, if they had waited to get married, they probably would have had consentual sex. This does NOT make either the boy or girl bad - just human and CERTAINLY not what is now considered criminal.
In many people's perfect world, boys and girls would wait to have sex until marriage AND wait until they are 18 or older. This has not been happening as old as time, yet we stand in harsh judgement of those who do have sex for whatever reason(s) before the age of 18. The truth and reality is - people are going to have sex and having harsh black and white laws that run the gammit of severity is just bad.
In other words, the blogger suggests it's OK to have sex with a 15-year old girl.
That law has needed revamping since it's beginning!
