Ok, Defend This

There is a crazy story that is taking the nation by storm (and kudos to a faithful reader for emailing this story six days ago although I couldn't believe it). It will only get worse. What you need to know: -- For some crazy reason, our federal government bids out contracts to "run" the coastal ports in New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami and Philadelphia. --(I've yet to find the definition of "run" but apparently the control is expansive). --For the last several years, the company winning the bid to control those ports has been a British company called Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co. --We like Britain. They are our friends. Tony Blair likes W. They support our War On Terror. --Last week, a company owned by the Persian Gulf country, the United Arab Emirates, bought the British company. --That means the United Arab Emirates is going to be in charge of major U.S. Ports. --The United Arab Emirates has "Arab" in its name. --Ok, the United Arab Emirates has ties to 9/11 --The Bush Administration, and I am not making this up, is in favor of this deal. --The current director of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff , said this weekend that, "We make sure there are assurances in place, in general, sufficient to satisfy us that the deal is appropriate from a national security standpoint." --Exactly how was this done? Can't tell you, "it's classified". (Sound familiar?) --Even Republicans on Capital Hill are raising hell about this deal. --The Bush Administration is so scared of terrorism that they have to monitor your phone calls. --The Bush Administration isn't worried about the United Arab Emirates running our ports. --I'm confused. Everything you ever need to know can be found here (the results of a Google News search).

Nothing to worry about. the UAE will not destroy our ports. It is too easy for the USA to kick the UAE into oblivion. Heck, 7-11 is owned by Japan.

My slightly exaggerated impression of anon 10:42. "Nothing to worry about.... never mind what Bush is screwing up now.... here's a nice distraction over here.... Look at the bunny, look at the silly bunny....."

The administration has to plan for a 9/11 2006 event to predate the elections.

I'm not sure I can defend this one. It baffles me and I am certainly opposed to it.

That said, it's funny how the liberals who say there is nothing to worry about and let freedom ring for anything and everything are now on their high horse about this. Make up your minds.

However, if you rather play bash the President than stick to your guns, I certainly can see how this is ammo for the cannon. I just don't understand the thinking here.

Lib spin???? Can you imagine what the response would have been if a Democratic administration had approved this?? Nothing to worry about...UAE will not destroy our ports. ANYONE with any sense is not worried about the country...they should be worried about its citizens or others with connections to the UAE...like other terrorists. This administration is totally off its rocker. It's time for a change.

8:38 - You're exactly right about what the Republicans would be saying if this was done during Clinton's administration! They’d be crying of "one-world" sell-out, caving to the enemy, and much worse.

Fact is Dubai is an unusually "friendly" Muslim country. Very good relations with the US. But the fact remains that the port management company is government owned. They bought the former management company with the huge excess in American $$$ they receive by selling their nearly endless pool of oil to our SUV drivers. We are our own worst enemy when it comes to energy consumption.

No man is an Island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.

If the UAE deal does not affect our security, let's outsource Bush and Cheney's secret service details to the UAE. What is good for the goose....

Bush is being consistent. Has not done anything about immigration or securing the border, so why worry about our major ports?

I wonder just who in the administration oked that port deal? This is politically very hot. Bush had to backpedal on the Mier appointment (remember her?) and will likely back out of this one. Bush needs to fire some of the jerks (poorly) advising him.
