I'm a foreign affairs idiot but a
story today out of Iraq seems huge.
There are Shiites and Sunnis in Iraq. I'm not exactly sure what the difference is but is seems like they can be compared to The Union and the Confederacy. Well, today "the golden dome" of one of the holiest Shiite shrines was blown up. (Great before and after pic
here.) And the Shiites blame the Sunnis. That led to massive retaliation.
The use of the term "Civil War" in Iraq was all over the news.
Mark it on your calenders. Today might have been Iraq's attack of Fort Sumter.

Yeah, and we have 135,000 troops in the middle of the mess (that we had much to do with creating). I also fear this could be the start of further problems in Iraq - and maybe spreading beyond its borders.
Well, I'm all for religious freedom under our Constitution, and for religious tolerance worldwide--but I think its time for the "jury to come in" so to speak on the religion of Islam. They have gone into KILLING riots over CARTOONS, for goodness sake! They are nuts. Period.
P.S.--There also needs to be an end to the statement of Islam being a "religion of peace"--violence is inherent in their religious texts as a REQUIRED response to other people's beliefs. It is true that even Christianity has had historical periods of violence (which are now unanimously acknowledged as wrongful)--but examine Islam's history--NOTHING BUT VIOLENCE SINCE ITS INCEPTION. What will it take for the world to "wake up"?
Obviously this administration doesn't have a clue. Iraq is 3 different countries cobbled together by the British in the '30s and held in place by dictators who kept the religious leaders under their thumb. Of course there will be a civil war - if not sooner, then later.
They hate the US! And they believe that ALL Christians should be killed! You can go back to the 1st book of the bible and see where all this started!
We talked about this last night at Book Club. Had just reviewed 'The Kite Runner.' It's a story about Afghanistan.
The Sunnis and Shiites have hated, fought and terrorized each other for years & years & years. The difference between your analogy of the Union & Confederacy struggle is this: The Arabs all have one common denominator that we've long since lost after our Civil War. Their perceptions of, and heavy value upon, their HONOR. They hold their fight up to be in defense of their honor, in keeping their opponent down beneath them. Each side has the same goal...the same value system...the neverending struggle.
Hell, in America, we abdicate honor when it becomes difficult. And, this sort of "Civil War" has been rampant over there for ages...nothing new. Our media is just watching right now...
