Might not be a contract like this, and they might not have to check under pillows for clothes, but essentially they are mistreated this way and kept trapped and dependent. No way out, too many kids, older, not attractive, etc.
And what this nimrod does not understand is that by loving and giving, he would get willingly from his wife a great many of the things he seems to covet.
