Why is it that any Race, Creed, Religion or Chosen Sexual Orientation (other than Whites or Christians) can add PRIDE to their name and they be considered brave or courageous?

I never used to understand how it even made sense.
I have finally decided that "pride" is held as the polar opposite to "shame". In other words, a defiant refusal to be ashamed of being gay or black or whatever other group a person falls into.
I've never felt ashamed of who I am and have never wanted to be part of a group, so the Gay pride thing has never spoken to me.
If you want to be proud of some wider group you happen to fall into, though, I don't think anyone here is going to stop you.
