Why doesn't anyone ever ask,"What's the point of recognizing civil marriage, anyway?" In my humble opinion, civil marriage creates two classes of citizenry. That is: married people upon whom we bestow benefits and the unmarried whom we penalize. This whole same sex marriage arguement just underscores that fact. Eliminate civil marriage entirely. Let everyone stand on his/her own and make contracts for those issues where they want to be "joined". Otherwise, we know that this whole same sex marriage thing is just a "goodie grab".
Why do you assume that just because there is an advantage to being in a traditional marriage, there must be a disadvantae to not being in that marriage? Just because someone has an advantage does not make the other people less advantaged. We all have the opportunity to marry anyone of the opposite sex that will have us.
