Not the poor but the lazy. See that is the leftwing's misconception of the conservative's. We truly don't mind helping someone through a rough patch but we absolutely refuse to allow a person to create a lifestyle from it. Unfortunately that is what has happened.
If you can't make it in the US on your own then chances are you can't make it at all. We are the land of opportunity.
I have no trouble with helping someone, but do believe they should have drug tests to receive their help. Not to mention receive job training, and REALLY apply for jobs (not just walk in, ask "are you hiring" and be able to count that as an attempt to get a job). Would love to know what would happen if someone said "as a matter of fact, we are hiring. When can you start?" Ha!
Does anyone find it odd that only (1) school board member has a child enrolled at Bridgeport ISD?
Good lord parents, wake up- what are you teaching your kids- if you don't make something your parents can just throw a fit until you get your way? How about academics, does anyone care about their childs education anymore? Bridgeport used to have (3)freshman & (3) sophomores and that were the JV Squad and then (8) juniors & seniors total on Varsity and that worked just fine.
How are some of these kids gonna make it in the real world when they can't even follow directions or rules on an every day basis? Good Luck Cheerleader Parents- you are gonna need it!
I saw the lady that delivers my mail using a "lonestar card' one time. Talk about taking a double dip. I think you could fix this system and it could be a very good thing instead of a very abused thing. Bread, jug water, bologna, and canned vegetables. Thats it. Why is it that the government pays people not to grow food on one hand then pays for peoples food in another? Only in America...
I do not mind paying some taxes to help out the poor, and I don't believe it's my job to judge how people got poor, either.
Those of you who keep spouting off about laziness need to step outside of Wise County and visit Mississippi or Appalachia or anywhere that many people have the odds completely stacked against them. Of course there are exceptions, those people who really are just plain LAZY. But plenty of "lazy" adults on government assistance were born to neglectful parents who failed to love them, teach them, or give them the skills they needed in life to survive. And it's not our job to determine who is who between them all. Try being a little boy born in New Orleans to drug addicted parents and zoned to some dreadful inner-city school. Exactly how are you going to rise above that kind of hurt and neglect? All people are, to a large extent, just a product of their upbringing, and I feel sad for them that they didn't get the same blessings that I did. And I feel proud of those rare exceptional people who are able to rise above lousy beginnings.
I am proud of this country and think it's the best place in the world to live, but I refuse to cover my eyes and say everything's perfect and if you can't get by here then you're worthless. There's lots of opportunity in America, but there's a limit to that.
11:00 How gullible you are, my friend. I have worked in the past with programs aimed at helping the poor, supposedly through rough times, and guess what...the majority of them want to retain their sense of entitlement and live off the backs of the rest of us. I agree with the poster to help them for 6 months (but I'd make it 3) then cut them off. Work or starve, baby...survival of the fittest.
Arthur, Thank you, it is so hard for most people to cherish authentic frontier gibberish in type since is lacks the impact provided by the eloquence of a live performance.
Truth is it needs to be regulated, and REALLY regulated, not just question and answer on a form to fill out by people who know how to abuse the system that was meant for those kind of people mentioned by Anon 11:00...but unfortunately, it's not and it's been going on so long that I think like some other things in our country, it's become so huge that nobody wants to tackle the issue for fear of being labeled as someone who hates the poor. Our country is the biggest enabler of people who do not want to work and do their part. Ask anyone who works at Walmart if there are people who use food stamps, and Mom has a manicure and pedicure, carrying an iphone, etc. Happens all the time...
Enabling people doesn't help them or help future generations. You help them by forcing them to get out and make a change and get a job, whether it's cleaning floors, toilets, serving fast food...whatever. You cripple people when you give them a hand-out. Most of the people I see using food stamps do have professional manicures and drive nicer cars than I do. they spend their money on themselves and our money on their food, housing, etc. It sickens me. Make them choose between working and starving...then they might get off their entitled asses.
I resent anyone that feels they have a right to my money. That is not to say that we don't need govt or that we don't need taxes to pay for govt, we do. The Constitution lays out very plainly what our govt is there to do and handout food stamps didn't make the cut. Many people have a misguided beliefe that the general welfare clause gives our Congress a blank check to do whatever they wish. But if that is true then what was the point in enumerating the specific powers of the Congress? The general welfare clause is there because the founders couldn't foresee technological changes such as aircraft. We need an Air Force and this is something that benefits everyone equally and simultaneously and thus meets is in the general welfare of the people. Having me pay for food stamps used by others doesn't benefit me at all.
Our current welfare does not help people. It cripples them. You do not give something without requiring something. Try it with your children and see how it works out. The system persists not because it is about helping people; but, because it is about making liberals feel better about themselves.
Perhaps the wise folks who post such hateful words here should push for "welfare panels." That way "righteous" citizens can decide who is fed and who goes hungry.
I know there are those in society who prey on the programs that should provide only for those who truly need help. There are some who are related to me who do it. Speaking only of those, I know their level of education and their level of skills, yet they choose to not work, but use the welfare system. I see that as a shame, but they have no shame at all. None of them are black or brown -- they are white and lazy! I gladly support the welfare system for those in need, but not for everyone.
Does sending all our manufacturing jobs to China, Mexico, etc. have any effect on the number of people on food stamps? Does the manufacturing of Dodge pickups in Mexico City have any effect on unemployment in Detroit?
This is the way I see it: A worker on an assembly line in Detroit pays income taxes. A worker on an assembly line in Mexico City does not. The effect of my truck being assembled in Mexico is unemployment in Detroit. Those unemployed, who used to pay in to the government, now take from the government in the form of food stamps. Since we have to support so many unemployed and we don't have enough money, we borrow from China who has plenty to loan from their profits from goods sold to American consumers.
I could pay more for my truck if I did not have to support an unemployed auto worker. If the unemployed auto worker had a job and was paying income tax then the government would not have to take as much from me and I would have more dollars left after taxes. These extra dollars could go for buying a truck assembled in Detroit.
An if I did not have to pay interest to China then I could afford to pay more if the products were made in America by Americans who otherwise would be unemployed and asking for the money that I pay into the government in the form of income tax.
I have 2 mexican ladys (no men) living in the house next door to me and they don't work, have 2 cars, 4 kids, 2 texas cards, always home when I get off work. I work 2 jobs and my wife works 1 job just so we can have what they get for FREE. You tell me they don't know how to work Obammy's system.
4:43 You know this because you are a Republican? or because you don't have the slightest clue how a Republican thinks, this is just what your liberal idols tell you is how a Republican thinks. As for Detroit, the unions killed that city not Republicans.
10:14 The cheer drama at Bridgeport is turning into a huge mess. Maybe some people do not care about it but it is causing a lot of unneccesary problems!
7:29, I am a Republician and that is the way I think.
Unions have had a positive effect on the standard of living in America. A well paid population is a consuming population. A consuming population results in more products being manufactured and wealth for the companies. But when the manufacturers go out of country then they destroy the system that gave them their growth. On the other hand, I believe that there must be a balance between labor and manufacturer. The historical struggles between them built a great country.
At least two things have reduced the number of consumers: One was LBJ's great society and the other has been offshore manufacturing. Illegal labor from Mexico, building our McMansions, is also involved in the destruction of a well paid consuming labor force. Anglo carpenters are now almost non-existent or on food stamps.
11:00 Well I for one don't feel sorry for the inner city kids. They have more of an opportunity to get a higher education than a middle class white kid who is actually responsible for the costs incurred. When my grandfather couldn't find work he moved hundreds of miles to Texas in order to provide for his family. Work doesn't find them they have to look for it. There just doesn't have to be any motivation when you can make it off the government.
4:43 Nice thought but not necessarily the answer. As Americans we demand high wages, benefits, and nice work environments but we also demand the lowest price. We can't have our cake and eat it too. Greedy individuals not greedy companies.
To anonymous 10:24... I do not know about your postal carrier but mine, out of the kindness of her heart and on her own time, does shopping for shut-ins/disabled/elderly/non-drivers. Some of those people depend on LoneStar cards to pay for groceries.
Prior to pointing fingers you really should have more information.

shoot, a pot can call the kettle black all it wants to but a rolling wise man gathers no moss.
I do hate the poor. I hate the poor sap that keeps ruining this economy and making people poor.
That'd hatred of the lazy, my ignorant friend.
@9:25 am, I couldn't agree more with your "authentic frontier gibberish."
@9:34 am, I'm not a big fan of Ben Bernanke either.

Get a job bums.
Arthur, I hadn't thought of Bernanke. But ya, I hate him too.
If you can't find a job in 6 months then cut them off and I bet they will find work or starve to death. Either way, problem solved.
Obama's work at its finest with job lay-offs, the USA is in a world of trouble, thanks blackman.

I so want to be an investigator of people on welfare.

I would like to hear someone's opinion on abortion.
There has been a sharp increase in the amount of military personnel who are on or have applied for foodstamps. Are they lazy too?
Messkins and Naggers prolly make up 15 of the 15.4%...

Hateful verses Truth?
