I really don't mind them getting paid, it's just a strange way to do it. I bet they'll have some nice lawns this summer.

I'm with you Barry. I wouldn't mind it, but that opens the door for abuse as well as lots of whispering in Paradise about those receiving the perk. If I was the mayor or on the council, I think I would have to decline the benefit.
That does seem to leave the door wide open for abuse. I agree with wanting to possibly pay them something for their time and I wonder why they did not decide to just pay them a fixed amount per meeting?
i dont know how you sign up for a position thats volunteer then get a perk like this. aint right and i promise it probably will eventually become illegal
Funny that they have to attend a meeting to get the bill paid. I know of more than one occasion that they failed to have a quorum at scheduled meetings. I guess it's more of a bribe than compensation.
not sure about the city council and mayer, as for the VFD insurance, that is a welcomed site since the vfd has been responding to calls in the city limits since 1959 with out any restitution. Paying the insurance on the fire depts building and trucks is a small price to pay for Fire and EMS coverage. approximately $7,000 a year compared to $250,000 for a new truck.
Paying the insurance of the fire department is a no brainer. The city should do everything they can to make sure the fire department has what it needs to do their job. If that means helping with the building needs to allow more funds for the equipment, that is completely justified. However, paying the mayor and council member's water bill is a VERY STUPID move. First, PERKS are illegal! Look it up in the municipal code. Second WHO's idea was it????? The council member with the greenest yard or the pool? and Third - when a council member runs for office, they know it is an unpaid position, yet some expect special treatment, like not paying their water bills and marking themselves off the cut-off list - (Sound familiar Alvord residents?) If they run for the power trip or the perks, they are not running for the right reasons and the community will suffer. I say give them $50 a month for TRAINING, Grant research, and time at the meetings. Just don't distribute the checks until they have proven they are willing to work for it. If they do nothing, they should get nothing!
Move to Alvord, Some have even paid for personal plumbing bills with city funds. At least Paradise is open and honest about receiving favors funded by the taxpayers!
Holy smokes, the guy is volunteering probably hundreds of hours of his life a year for that stupid town. What's wrong with a little stipend such as this?
5:29 Because it is NOT a little stipends and it opens the flood gates for abuse. It's sort of like giving a council member a city credit card. Some you can trust to use it for "city business" while others will go buy personal items and never think twice about it. You read it here first - someone will abuse it and others will complain when their $200 water bill gets paid, while the other council member who conserves water, gets a $50 pay-off. So to make it fair, are they going to pay the conservative's other utility bills? My opinion is that if you are going to pay them to be a council member or mayor, pay everyone the same, that way there is no room for abuse.

What an extraordinarily bad idea.

I have heard of other cities doing this for council and VFD members, but they have a cap of $80 or $100 per month.
Compensation for volunteered time? They're not volunteers, then.
Amen, 12:33p!!

Not legal at all.
But nobody in Paradise is smart enough to figure that out.
Good grief... How much "abuse" can they possibly get away with?
Not much. Especially when they more they water the more they have to mow.
People need to chill.
It is still taxable compensation they should be reporting on their tax returns.

Being a mayor or city council member is a lot like self abuse and I'm not talking about playing your banjo either.
I'm suprised it's Paradise and Not Rhome! They used to get free water all the time bypassing meters.
You could not melt me down and pour me into anything resembling public service.
