Two Thoughts

Above blurb is from the Update today.
(1). Finally, the government taxing entities are reflecting the loss in property values. Up until now, they believed we were the most recession proof county in the country.
(2). We are about to have a county budget crisis. You lose 10% of your revenues, you've got problems.

That is a great way to start my day. I find it funny that my 40 year old house is amazingly worth $11K more this year than last according to the appraisal district. They said they had to get it "in line" with the other property in the area, which is homes 30 years newer.

No problem Barry! That's why we have law enforcement. Yes, we have a triad (City,County, State) of tax collectors, hard at work everyday, writing tickets to those violent speeders........ glorified, gun toting tax collectors! Do you think they signed up to be a cop to protect and serve or write meaningless tickets all day?

Barry, you might want to check the law on the simple fix for taxing entities when values drop. Tell me if I am wrong, but I think they can just set their rate to match tax revenues for the prior year.

My home value went up $12,000. Funny how home values suddenly shoot up in a downmarket year.

Why should 10% be a big deal? This county is staffed by conservative Republicans, they should have seen this coming and have already cut back in the appropriate areas and have a balanced budget ready to go?

Right?

hahahahahahaha

They will find another way to make up for it. One way or another they'll make you render unto Caesar.

You're lucky folks that get to live in Wise County.

I live in Dallas County, and my property values went up again this year...they've gone up every year I've owned this house.

Maybe they can cut back on city maintenance employees here in Decatur. That way there will only 3 guys leaning on shovels watching one guy work instead of 7!

"We are about to have a county budget crisis. You lose 10% of your revenues, you've got problems"

that is why it takes someone with no college education, no experience in finance and no history of dealing with a multimillion budget like jeff elder to think it is a good idea to spend money on fing artificial turf.

and if anyone tells you "it pays for itself in a few years" is a LIAR and/or a DUMBASS.

9:03am Annon...You are dead-on. The system was set up in 1981 to allow the appraisal district to determine the values and THEN the tax entities to determine the TAX RATES. The idea was the tax entities would adjust rates to reflect value changes. Just because your value increases does not mean you taxes must increase...UNLESS the tax entities fail to lower the rate. A 6th Grader could understand this. Why people don't attend the budget meetings for the tax entities rather than complaining about their values is beyond me.

11:57 - Couldn't agree with you more, but remember "it's all for the kids". Kids deserve luxuries when and if they can pay for them. Someone needs to start looking out for the taxpayers!

Nice job calling out a man's name and mentioning his lack of a paid for diploma. You are such a wuss and deserve a foot in your arse. I will promise you, I'll take an unneducated, sucessful buusiness man and father over your sorry arse any day.

1:07 yea youll be wanting to put a foot in someone's *ss when you see all that money tied up in turf in that rickety old-*ss stadium while school programs are being cut, teachers aren't getting raises, not enough money left in the budget for computers, etc.

in case you haven't noticed, we are in a recession and you don't buy sh*t like fing artificial turf. leave stunts like that up to sh*t for brain school districts like boyd isd to pull off.

11:57 very well said.
1:07 Uneducated sucessful business man at WHAT?

Anonymous said...

So can someone explain why my tax bill (and the appraised value of my home) went up???

11:57, 2:26 and 2:39 I must assume you know this man and have talked with him at length. You can't possibly make these accusations based on hearsay could you? I have never met the man and only know he has provided for his family for years, if he did that while owning his own business I would consider that a success. I would also like to know how many of the present school board members had experience with multi-million dollar budgets before they were elected. If Mr. Elder owns a business that provides for his family and employs people I would say that trumps a college degree. Finally, if you are willing to disparage another person by name you should at least be willing to post your own. I aplaud all who are willing to take on the task of working to improve our school district no matter if I agree with them or not, it is a thankless job.

I love anonymity 11:57 you are a gutless wonder...and if I knew your name I would call you out. You and those like you complain about the quality of candidates for local public office and don't seem to understand that those you would approve of (assuming they exist) have no reason to subject themselves and their families to your kind of crap. The next time an election rolls around get up off your lazy dead arse and put your name on the ballot and get a dose of the venom you choose to spew out your pie hole...everyone else thanks for allowing me to vent.

8:46 My taxes in RAB went up $32,000.00 just because I bought the house and moved in. That is crazy isn't it? You have to protest everytime the appraisals come out or they just keep raising the value.

The article says real property values were down nearly 10%, while BPP was off about 20% and excise and utilities revenues fell about 15%.

Absent huge reserves, averting serious budget problems will probably require cutbacks in excess of 10%, as the above data only deal with the assessment side, not necessarily the collection side, of taxes.

In a down economy, more people defer or evade tax payments, significantly raising the administrative cost for each dollar collected, or, put another way, diminishing the net revenue to public coffers.

So, just looking at the diminution on the assessment side tells only a portion of the story.

In regards to:

and if anyone tells you "it pays for itself in a few years" is a LIAR and/or a DUMBASS.

Personally I don't want turf. I have no children who did or ever will play football at the high school level, nor be in the band or drill team. HOWEVER, I have talked to someone who works in a school district where the field is of turf(which is used for everything including soccer, football, baseball, to name a few). And he says, at least in his district, that it DOES pay for itself, has very little maintenance, and is much more economical than grass.

Does that mean we need turf? Probably not! But, I'll bet you haven't even talked to anyone anywhere who uses turf comparable to the way it was suggested at DISD during the last bond election. Again, I"m not really for turf. In fact, I voted against the bond which included it las time, BUT I DO believe in doing some educated research before spewing your opinion as fact! Why don't you do just that! Make an appointment with several ADs. Discuss it with them, and then bring your findings to the surface - based on fact!

Isn't it funny how the hornet's nest stirrers can make any post seemingly be about the school board election?

So...is it true that one incumbent ran an ad in the local paper which included quotes by students of DISD, without their parents' permission or approval?

Is that legal? Did the incumbent obtain them legally, by checking to be sure their names weren't on the "do not publish" list that is generated after parents can"opt out" each year in the fall - thus NOT allowing anyone to print their child's information in the media???? Just askin'?

Maybe this is a nasty rumor. Maybe someone can clarify this for me. I've heard it twice in a week!

10:59 maybe you need to check facts instead of trying to spread rumors!

9:59, maybe you should prove what is said in 10:59's post ISN'T true. Seriously, is it true or not?
