Another Low For Local News

I've written about Hosam Smadi quite a bit: He's a dumb kid that the FBI found in a chat room, led him along and cultivated his desire to do an act of terrorism (which he could never do on his own), provided him with a fake car bomb, and then arrested him when he tried to detonate it with a cell phone (and then the FBI then immediately and conveniently notified the media).
The news late tonight is that he will enter a guilty plea tomorrow. No surprise there -- he's in federal court.
But when the local Fox 4 News reported the guilty plea plan tonight, this is what they said in a pre-packaged videotaped report to provide some background : "Agents say he left the SUV, packed with C4 and ammonium nitrate below the 60 story Fountain Place tower. Got a safe distance away and tried to trigger it with a cell phone." There was not a WORD that there was no possible way the bomb would go off, that FBI agents were with him at the time, or that no one was in danger.
Whether it be the Bush Administration or the Obama Administration, this case is nothing more that federal grandstanding. It was like shooting fish in a barrel.
You disagree? How many White Supremacists could the FBI find right now in a chat room who would be willing to push the detonation button of a bomb that would go off on a black church on a Sunday? How many rednecks could they find that would be willing to push a similar button that would blow up a Dallas mosque? Hundreds? Thousands? Tens of thousands?
It's grandstanding. It's politics. And it's a local news outlet that doesn't understand that it facilitates the paranoia by not getting the facts straight.

Barry you are full of shit

I totally agree with Barry.

Oh, come on Bee-Gee.

Sure, you can claim some props for saying Mr. Smadi was entrapped. But how do you know that he never (emphasis yours) could've pulled it off. Seems conjectural on your part, no?

And enough with the hyperbole that hundreds, thousands, or tens of thousands of north Texans are champing at the bit to blow up black churches, or mosques. That's nothing more than your naked (neekid?) bias.

If Mr. Smadi really had no interest in attempting a terrorist act, and was instead coerced by the FBI, then by all means I hope he is exonerated.

But for Pete's sake, it sure looks stupid at this point to make him out to look like some kind of saint.

Nope...sounds like more of your agenda against the Fox News channel. Nuke the little rag head, and nuke all the white supremacists too while you're at it.

But, but, I guess I don't understand ...........If a redneck or white supremacists is willing to push the button to blow up people (unknowingly to them a set up) wouldn't they be guilty of something other than stupidity???

the goverment does grandstand however this guy was given what he thought was a bomb parked in a buliding and tried to detonate it. the alphabet gangs ie fbi atf dhls or department of homeland security would rather set with their thumbs in their butts trying to figure out how screw the common citizen over and take away there rights rather than go after the real terrorist and crimnals

wordkyle said...

So you sincerely think, in your heart of hearts, that "tens of thousands" of rednecks are willing to blow up a mosque full of people?

The fact that you believe that is as disturbing as anything else you said.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Barry. Instead of hunting down and coercin people to do wrong, find the ones that will not need coercing.

Anonymous said...

Barry, you are so wrong on this one and your opinion of Rednecks is more than warped! You need some help in what caused you to feel this way. Was someone mean to you growing up?

Anonymous said...

If more people in Wise County could read, they would also agree with you Mr. green.

Anonymous said...

So, let me get this straight. You are not happy that the Gov't is taking steps to keep this country safe. But in the same breath, do you also cry when the Gov't didn't do enough to prevent the 9/11 attacks? You can't have it both ways.

For all we know, this guy could have been the next 9/11.

Honestly, I'm more scared of having a liberal thought in Wise County than a muslim terrorist. Such unhappy people around here.

There is a glaring error in the story. The last sentence should have read as follows: "It's a local news outlet that knows creating paranoia by being the first and/or most detailed report of a news story about explosives and a man whose name includes 'Husein' guarantees continued high ratings.

To Barry...
I do not know if it is your politics or your job that has given you such a negative opinion of your FELLOW AMERICANS but you really should consider hanging out with better people so as to change your opinion about your FELLOW AMERICANS. Keep in mind, AMERICANS continually/consistently donate more money/resources to assist brown/black/Muslim people than any other nation/individuals.

Nowhere in your dissertation about your hypothesis of Smadi being coerced did you ever mention, just like everyone else who commits a crime, Smadi, could have, at any point, said NO.

That kid being DUMB is no excuse. He was hoping to blow up a building with people in it! Its not the first time a poorly educated, easily influenced person committed a crime.

Anonymous said...

Let me see if I follow. Someone who wouldn't be willing to play up a building will agree to blow up a building if the FBI asks them to? Really? I guess no one has asked me to blow up a building or a mosque or anything else but if they did, I think I would still say no. Were they holding a gun to his head?

Am I the only one who thinks Barry is the crazy one here?

Anonymous said...

you are wrong barry and some of the things you say are very stupid.

Anonymous said...

Perhaps BG isnt crazy, but he is acting much like a defense attorney would. Are we to assume that BG's assertion of details is indeed fact. Was the kid coersed? Was he hunted down and baited? Is it possible that he made blatant statements in the chat rooms that would indicate to the feds that he had a desire and a plan already in place. Investigators are professionals too. You cannot discount their efforts to thwart dangerous situations. That being said...IMO, BG isnt crazy, he is just making a conserted attempt to make you think and raise the comment bar to a new level. I predict a bashing and high count.

Okay folks, Green has all, and I mean all the inside information to form his opinion. Let him have it. He's a Decatur lawyer and is knowledgable in the ways of the big government.

Fountain Place is the headquarters of Tenet Healthcare and contains many financial institutions and offices that serve as Region 6 headquarters for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

I can't imagine how many people could have died if this kid got his wish.

It's the 15th largest/tallest building in the state.

He was 'just joshin' tho.....didnt really mean it.....

If someone can be baited into trying to kill people, he/she should be prosecuted - no matter what the color of the skin.

Barry, you must have been bullied by rednecks.

7:00 Your characterization of people in Wise County as not being able to read is ignorant.

Anonymous said...

Barry, you have not read the transcripts of the conversations so you do not know how all of this began. Also, do some research and learn how many people are approached by law enforcement in the chat sites each day, just like they do perverts. Of the thousands and thousands that are contacted only a few actually follow through, these are the real threats regardless how dumb you think they are. You must remember terrorists are trolling these chat rooms as well looking for the same people we are, luckily he was found by our side first.
Poor pitiful dumb guy who was willing to kill innocent people.

giving a bomb to a muslim and giving him a plan is no different than giving an alcaholic a bottle of Jack and then busting him for PI or DWI depending on where you gave it to him.

Barry, I love your blog - especially the random thoughts. I've never been to big on the bleeding heart liberal gig, but to each his own. I hope you don't start promoting the Rev (my ass) Al Sharptongue and Jesse Jackoff, we'd have to part company. I think you way off on this one.

Anonymous said...

So, you're saying lets wait until he DOES blow up tens, hundreds, thousands, of Americans and THEN it'll be ok to jail him?

You're a moron, Green!

The Devil said...

I say we need to be entrapping all in our society willing to blow up someone or something because they do not like what they or it stands for regardless of their ability to actually pull it off.

chupacabra said...

The FBI et al are so hopelessly lost- so out of their colective depth they have to literally lead some dimwit by the hand to commiting a 'crime' and then bust him- we're screwed. I mean really, this should scare you as much as any terrorist act that has occured or been 'thwarted' (for multiple reasons) and if it doesn't you really, really need to work on your critical thinking superpower.

Obama needed a victory, so they provided one. thats all this is

It's the FINAL week of May sweeps, what'd you think they were gonna spin it any different way?

Anonymous said...

liberal thought isn't that an oxymoron?

Anonymous said...

That guy could have caused a 9/12 or somethin.

Anonymous said...

barrion, most people, i have found, who think they are pretty smart are actually pretty simple.

Anonymous said...

Barry are the "Rednecks" you are referring to, the same ones that go to Nascar races?

Anonymous said...

Look folks, I'm not gonna come to BG's defense on this one. The guy is guilty.

But, you should all take a little time to consider what BG says. He regularly works with those accused of crime. He sees, up close, how dumb these people are and how easily they can be coerced into doing something stupid. His opinion isn't worthless just because you disagree with him. He deals with these people daily.

There's a lot more stupid in our society than you may be willing to believe. They are regularly coerced into doing all sorts of stupid things.

Again, this dude is guilty. Case closed. But the question of how law enforcement spends its time is valid. I might rather have them working on the terrorists that are educated, funded, and have a high likelihood of doing some damage. Maybe they are and we'll celebrate that arrest next week.

BeenThereDoneThat said...

I think Barry has a good point with his comment and I actually believe that the government could set up a similar scenario and set-up a bunch of racists or whatever....but that STILL doesn't mean that I don't want that guy locked up for what he was willing to do - kill innocent people.

wordkyle said...

There is always the option that law enforcement agencies ARE in so-called "white supremacist" and "redneck" chat rooms, unsuccessfully trying to entice someone to commit an act of violence. You don't hear about the stings that don't work.

Anonymous said...

barry a discussion about this is useless.they are simply convicting him of atempt to kill people.I like the photo of the tailgate better.

libs r so stupid, they try to equate rednecks from the south, with muslims. trust me if we had the same hatred as muslims there wouldnt be a DC anymore.

we would rather honor our constitution.
