I have commented on this subject before but will do it again. When I was a young married mommy, both my husband and I were in college and working part time jobs to pay the bills. We could have qualified for food stamps and my school aged son could have got on free lunch program. I REFUSED!!! Instead I shopped carefully and young son took his lunch to school every day. Peanut butter sandwich, fruit, and 10 cents for milk. Or maybe tuna fish or bologna sandwich. Did we suffer? NO! Did he suffer? NO! He's a college graduate working in Dallas and doing fine, thank you.

Judy just doesnt get it. She happened to be married (someone split the bills with) and both had part-time jobs. What about the single mother and child living in places like Detroit where there are no jobs.

Glad these folks are getting food stamps, most of them have probably have had some bad luck or gotten a raw deal in the past. Might as well sign up for the freebie.

Anonymous said...

Judy gets it just fine. There are too many out there that are too lazy to help themselves and taking away from the ones that truly need it. You do what you can to survive, been there done that.

Judy said...

1:23... We had crappy jobs, cleaning offices, working in fast food restaurants, anything to bring a buck in so we could get our degrees and feed us and young son. We lived in a slum lord house with no oven, no central H/A. It can be done. You just have to want it...with out government assistance. It CAN be done, if you're not the lazy sort, of course.

Anonymous said...

We are being duped. The folks in charge of compiling and reporting statistics such as this have now conveniently started grouping Hispanics in with the Whites so that these %s wouldn't be one-sided (favorable for the actual anglo-whites and not-so-favorable for the messkins and niggers). They do this also with crime rates to try to cover up the fact that most of the violent crime in this country is disportionally higher among Hispanics and Blacks.

Check out far south Texas - how many of those "whites" do you think are actually Hispanic - and probably illegal anyway.

They know that if they reported the truth, the real statistics (White/Hispanic/Black) would likely incite a riot.

Remote Controller said...

Federal government, state government, local government. Which do you think should be responsible for the assistance to it's population?

I don't have a problem w/ people pulling from the government, I have a problem w/ people thinking that the federal government should be the one that we pull from. Get off the assistance, go to your church, force your local governments to help and keep the fed's completely out of it.

The invention of the Federal/State run welfare system was the beginning of the end.

Anonymous said...

Remote C,

You are dead-on correct. Responsibility for anything should be individual, local, regional, state, and very very lastly, national.

The smallest level possible should take care of problems.

If that happened, taxes would be a quarter of what they are now.

BG, Jack Co still only has 6% total on food stamps. Better than Wise's 8% total.

As a teacher, it would upset me to see the kids getting free lunches, yet wearing the hottest clothes, have the newest gadgets, go to Cowboys games, etc., while my kids didn't, but paid for their meals. Now my kids have their masters and real jobs. Where are these others?

Judy said...

1:29... Thank you. You obviously understand where I'm coming from and obviously have been there yourself. There is nothing more satisfying than achieving your goals with hard work.
Anon 1:23, care to comment?

Anonymous said...

Blah, blah, blah. Yada ,yada. And let me tell you another thing...

Anonymous said...

Judy, your assumption that every one who receives food stamps is lazy is absolutely deplorable.

We subsidize MANY of the US farmers and ranchers with our tax dollars, so why can't we provide food stamps to hungry families?

And, it's not all about children and struggling families. What about the elderly on meager fixed incomes, who are too old and infirm to work?

And to Remote Controller, I read in the Times Record News this morning that Wichita Falls missed an $85,000 grant for Meals on Wheels because the person in charge sent the grant request in late....tough economic times are causing the funding entities to be strict about grant guideline compliance, and being late is no excuse...I guess there won't be much forcing of the local government to help, since they couldn't get their ducks in a row in the first place.

Anonymous said...

2:09 - I'm one of those soft-hearted liberals who support assisting those in need. However, I totally agree that those getting food stamps and other government assistance should NOT be spending their other funds on pricy excesses. The problem is, how do you control the stupid spending of stupid people?

Anonymous said...

Judy/1:29. Sure there are abuses (the kids wearing the nice clothes yet receiving free lunches) but, by far, nationwide, those who receive food stamps and/or other assistance are those who really need it and have no other option. Especially in this day in age where jobs are being lost left and right.

1:23

Anonymous said...

Judy is right on. I, too, have been through lean times and was better for those times. Too bad if they have to go without their new clothes or shop carefully and do without....why should I have to pay taxes so others can idle? I was a single mom and carried my own weight by working TWO jobs, so get off your collective a**es and get a second job. I'm sick of my hard earned money going to subsidize ANYONE, old, young, whatever. If they are old and too damn stupid to plan ahead and budget, they deserve the fate they get.

Anonymous said...

WOW! And how many of you haters profess to be Christians? How many of you donate to the needy? 2:25PM, I hope you have a family that will care for you when you are down, ill or unable to care for yourself, because I certainly wouldn't pi$$ on you if you were on fire 5 feet away from me.

Anonymous said...

2:25PM, I'm tired of subsidizing your dumb existence. Please stay off public roads, please let your house burn down instead of calling the fire department, and homeschool your children. Thank you.

Danny Boy said...

What amount of money could be saved on government programs if we required (like all other countries) those receiveing the benefit to be a citizen of the United States of America?

Both Judy and 1:23 are right, there is not 100% correct arguement, there will be abuses of any system whether by the provider or receiver.

Anonymous said...

2:25 We did work hard from age 16 to now and had a nice sum put back for those Golden Years, which have been tarnished by losing most of my 40lK. Have paid taxes and SS for all those years. Do I mind taking from the government? Hell NO. But I'm still working and paying taxes, but things happen that we have no control over, doesn't mean that we are stupid.

Anonymous said...

You don't subsidize my existence. I work to actually pay my way. I was smart enough and foresighted enough to get an education and a good job. Then I was diligent enough and worked hard to keep the good job. So, when I get old or ill, I can promise you, I'll have planned ahead, saved money, and will take care of myself...the way it's SUPPOSED to be. Never asked for a handout and never will. End of story.

Anonymous said...

How many Pell or other grants did it take for your family to get their college educations, Judy?

Perfect points, 2:43PM - the self righteous haters posting on here always forget about those little things like roads, public schools and such.

I've seen way too many people abuse food stamps as a visiting nurse. They abuse the system, they use the ERs as their private doctor, they spend their money on cigarettes and alcohol while spending MY $$$ as food stamps on food. They drink beer, sit on their porches and pop out more welfare babies while we work. You bleeding heart liberals haven't seen the abuses I have. Plan ahead, work hard, and quit living off the fruits of others' labors. That's Biblical, so keep your bible-thumping and chest-beating to yourself, 2:41.

Anonymous said...

Judy does need to be congratulated! I'm proud for her and her pride! I too grew up poor and had nothing but never assistance. However...I can't judge those they get assistance because I do not know what they are enduring. I hope I am doing enough for others

1:23 REEELLLY? You want to mention Detroit? My My. If those people would put their crack pipes down maybe they could get their crap together. VISIT DETROIT IF YOU DON"T BELIEVE ME. Detroit caused it's own demise.

I personally know a 21 year-old who got herself preggos in high school. She couldn't depend on her mom or dad for any support so she got a job and supported herself and her baby. NO child support either. NEVER once did she go on welfare. She's still supporting herself and child today and is in medical school. ALL BY HERSELF. Do you realize you are one of the biggest suckers on the face of this earth to believe the crap these POOR ME people spew?

Let these people live on the streets and I bet you they'd get off their ever loving lazy asses and get a job.

TOUGH LOVE...BABY....TOUGH LOVE

Anonymous said...

The same tired old arguments:

So Danny Boy since you think everyone who gets assistance is not a citizen then if your right Jack County has had a 163% increase in undocumented workers in the last two year.

1:33 – what does it matter if whites and Hispanic are included in the same number? Or is there some racial bias you would like to discuss?

No question there is abuse. But do you want to tell that first grade little girl whose mother works hard at the best job she can find that she won’t get dinner tonight because you feel like that are others that are beating the system? I say help those that ask for it and work hard to clean out the very few that abuse it.

Remote Controller said...

2:17 PM

I used to write grants for a community justice center. You would be amazed at how much "government" misses the deadlines too.

Make local governments transparent and show who is responsible for these assistance programs.

The welfare program of the United States has been a failure from the start. People show the success stories but never mention they would have probably been success stories in the locally run assistance programs too. Local assistance would also help keep "abuse" to a minimum (since everyone would know who is on a program)

Anonymous said...

A logical and calm discussion on how to help those in need is very hard to have.

I recommend the move “Blind Side” . Long story short it’s about how a kid growing up in the worst possible condition can still make it.

But he only makes it with the help of others. In his case not a government program but a thoughtful loving family. Sometimes there are enough thoughtful loving families and we need a safety net to help those that need it.

As long as the first reaction to food stamps is racial or the belief that it’s all people who are just trying to get something for nothing we will never be as great of a country as we profess.

Anonymous said...

Maybe you should find a new career path, 2:59PM......you seem pretty agitated with it all.

Sorry, 3:06 - you've missed some part of the story.

No way the young lady is paying for it on her own. She's getting gov't money from somewhere to pay for at least part of it.

Anonymous said...

2:59 your perception is skewed because that is all that you see. For every one of those who live as you described there are many, many more that just need a little help.

Anonymous said...

There's always going to be arguing from both sides, and no matter how much arguing is done, nobody is going to change their mind. Why can't we all, instead, just sit back and ponder: how can 2:41 pee a fire out from 5 foot away?

That !@#$'s not free! We all have to pay for it through our taxes. Some of the people handing out the money, and some of the people getting the money, seem to forget that little fact

I don't mind if my taxes are used to help others in need, but it should be a temporary measure, not a lifetime entitlement

Anonymous said...

I wan't to see a list of every person on welfare in Wise County. Where can I find one? Shouldn't that be public information since it is paid with taxpayer funds?

I also want the local WC Health and Human Services to install a "TIP" line for people to rat out those who abuse the welfare system.

Anonymous said...

I'm not proud of it, but I used to cheat with young moms and then tip them $100 so they could buy their kids (sons) food and save for a higher education. Some of those kids are now in college.

Danny Boy said...

Ok 3:08, let me draw this out for you. At no point did I say the programs were 100% received by non-citizens, whether here legally (VISA) or not. The statement was said to be the programs could save money. The programs are or can be very beneficial put should be used for the benefit of citizens, not just anyone. If we eliminate these programs millions who either depend on (nothing wrong with that) or qualify would suffer tremedously. There are abuses of programs and funds at every level of goverment and the private sector, it is embraced by the Federal Government.

The fact is that narrow minded people can only assume the issue is black or white. You cannot see the mixture of benfit and harm or the fact that a program is beneficial yet abused. Low paying jobs are the backbone of our economy and any economy in the world and yet they are looked down upon and told to be better. Government programs are mainly intended to effect a small group of citizens, but because of groups (the outdated ACLU for one) the programs must be available to all, whether they live here legally or not. Because of these groups blackmailing and paying the government representatives we elect, these programs are widely abused, over populated and underfunded than they were originally intended to be.

“….I want to see a list of every person on welfare in Wise County…..”

This may come as a shock to you but there is more to this world (and county) then what you see or drive by each day. Your comment implies that you can’t imagine that there are in fact people in need. Do you not believe that unemployment has gone up and that good hard working people are out of work?

Yes, there are many examples of people who no matter what happens never ask for help but that doesn’t make it wrong for the people that do need help to get it.

Anonymous said...

Here's a solution:

Yes, get the federal government out of it. Make it local.

Anyone needing a free meal should go to the Wise County jail and be fed for free exactly what the prisoners get to eat.

Trust me, the line won't be too long.

Anon 2:55... no grants at all. Just hard work!

2:22...(2nd 2:22)Evidently the "stupid spending of stupid people" is easy. I saw it all the time as a former teacher. I drove a little toyota corolla and some of my parents, kids on free lunch btw picked them up in NICE pimped out SUV's.

Guess what these kids got for Christmas. Yep, the newest Playstation or X-box, games, tv's, etc...

I bet those kids today are a burdan on society.

Talk about judging a book by its cover!

Maybe those kids on free lunch bought those designer rags and Cowboy shirts at my garage sale for 25 cents a piece......just saying.

It is so easy to pick on the poorest of our bunch, but lets not forget the "freebies" farmers, defense contractors, small businesses, etc get. I think we would be hard pressed to name some group not on the public dole in some way.

That tax code isn't 6K pages long because it is filled with "breaks" for those employed flippin burger.

Of course there are abuses, it is the American way. I think the best attitude for me starts with "But for the Grace of God, there goes me......"

Anonymous said...

4:06 Yes HONEY, I believe unemployment has gone up and that good hard working people are out of work.

But, are those good hard working people REELLLY looking for another job or are they living off the government?

Are they refusing to flip burgers or work 2 jobs to get by? Are they selling off any high tone items to get money, etc.? The questions could go on and on.

I'd rather take my piece of the pie, or "a handout" as all you perfect people label it, than send it overseas and not see one red cent of benefit from that money! I'm so happy to hear that people who have never had to use welfare are so much better than those who have not, I'm sure Jesus would be real proud of that. Maybe if we had more people stepping up to the plate to help their neighbor instead of putting them down we wouldn't be arguing this stupid point.

I didn't realize that if your accessing your finanically eligible welfare benefits that you also need to pass the judgment of those that in their opinion are abusing that system. Here's a couple of standards:

1) If you are fat you don't need me to buy you food

2) If you have cable, directv, or even a TV at all I owe you nothing. You have caused your own problems

3) If you have a yard and don't have a garden, forget it. You aren't trying to help yourself.

Come by. I'll give you seeds, I'll give you a hoe. And I'll give you a lecture about how sitting on your ass watching TV does not help feed you.

Part of the process in applying for food stamps and medicaid....
1. Pay Stubs for two months
2. Birth Certificates for the children in the family
3. Proof of Residency such as an electricity bill.
4. Bank Statements for two months.
5. Copies of your ID.

And now your telling me that we need to add, a fashion requirement, and proof of a garden? Anything else? I have a four inch binder full of JOBS that I've applied for while I was sitting on my ass watching TV, do I need to include those as well? I have four employment job agents e-mailing me job openings, as well as several volunteer applications that I have submitted. Is there anything else I NEED to do to be eliegible to welfare assistance? I've applied for over 33 jobs in two days, and have yet to recieve a phone call from any of them. I've also applied for WIA, Workforce Investment Act through my local Workforce Commission Office, and I know all the staff at the Decatur office on a first name basis. Is there anyone else that needs proof from me that I'm using the system since NO ONE will give me a job in Wise County or any other county for that matter!

I see this over and over, day after day:

A basket full of cokes, chips, ice cream, candy and assorted microwavable JUNK FOOD paid for with a Lone Star card. Then they buy a case of beer and carton of smokes and pay with cash. Next they pay their DirecTv bill... with cash. Then I wheel it out to a loaded 2009 pickup or SUV.

Yes, I see hispanics do this. But I see more of this irresponsible shopping and abuse of the system done by whites. I am prevented by law to say anything to a person paying with food stamps about their purchase unless it is to point out an item that is not allowed. Trust me there isn't much that's not allowed to be paid with a Lone Star Card.

Food stamps should be restricted to a list of necessary basic food items and forced to buy the least expensive brand just like WIC.

You want a Hot Pocket, chips and a soda? Then you get flour, tomato paste, meat, cheese, potatoes, salt, oil, sugar and Kool-Aid. You make a Hot Pocket, chips and Kool-Aid from scratch! You'll have to suffer without that Dr. Pepper.

If you audited Lone Star Card purchases I guarantee you would see exactly what I am talking about. The system is badly broken and needs to be overhauled to be just like WIC. No junk food!

Man it's my lucky day, I was putting my work boots on to go and pick up a hoe and I'll be danged if I didn't find my food stamps!

If I remember correctly, back when Clinton was in office he wanted to put a 2 year limit on welfare & food stamps, after 2 years of living off the taxpayers you are out & can't come back! This would have certainly put a hold on crossing the border to live the good life (if you want to call living on welfare the good life)!

You want to see some really nice cars driven by the Holding Out the Hand Recipient, go over to a church on Beach St. in Ft. Worth, but be warned, they'll flog your car, if they think you have stuff to hand out! I know this because I took some stuff there after my relative's estate sale! You can't be too damn needy, if you are driving brand new cars with all the chrome & the nice expensive stereo systems in them!!!

If you have to draw a welfare check & food stamps, PLEEEEASE keep your legs closed or use the best birth control the taxpayers can buy, because your 15 minutes (some less) of pleasure puts a hell of a burden on us taxpayers!
