Random Tuesday Morning Thoughts

  • OK, the Classifieds section on wisecounty.com crashed a few months back. Well, they are back up and running in a new and improved software package. There will still be some bugs and it'll take a while to repopulate it, but check it out.
  • I can't tell you how many emails I got asking me about them.
  • Anybody remember Joe Bob Brooks movie reviews? Edit: Yep, screwed the name up.
  • Looking at ponds or lakes on mornings like this is cool because there's a huge mist of steam coming off of them. At least it looks like steam.
  • A female Wise Countian is camping in the Grand Canyon this week. She ran into a ..... well, take a look. Oh, my.
  • I ate at the Firehouse Deli (I think that's what it is called) yesterday off of Western Center Boulevard. Good stuff. But they've got the craziest painting in there -- I took a pic and will post it later.
  • I'm forever boycotting the Quizno's off of Western Center because it is nasty. And they never had the sauce squirt bottles filled.
  • You know your in a high tone place when they have "squirt bottles" of special sauce.
  • The Byron Nelson golf tournament is this weekend but I don't think anyone cares anymore. And didn't the Colonial used to be played on Memorial Day weekend?
  • I think the Swine Flu paranoia is trying to flare up again.
  • The grand jury in Wise County returned 97 indictments last Thursday. And this comes on the heels of the last two meetings which produced over 150 indictments. When I took over as DA in 1993, I bet there weren't 50 cases pending on the docket.
  • When you know your life has gone horribly wrong: "A Frisco man is scheduled to go on trial today for having unprotected sex with several women without telling them he had HIV, the virus that causes AIDS." (And I predict the comments on that DMN link will get crazy.)
  • Oil is approaching $60 a barrel. Gas prices are rising. This is not a good.
  • After over a year of use, I'm still convinced that the iPhone is the greatest invention ever.
  • Anybody got any opinions on the Infiniti G37?
  • Some girls at the courthouse said I should do a post of "What kind of car should I buy" because they thought the results would be funny.
  • Forgot to mention about my drive to Waco: Hasn't I-35 been under construction for the last 30 years.
  • Frisbee golf looks kind of fun. Not very productive, but fun.
  • There's talk of making the State Fair midway a year round affair? Scott Sams on the Channel 11 morning show said it would be a good idea, "because we could run down there and get a Fletcher's corny dog all year long." The other anchor uttered an "Oh, yeah!!" Puhleeze.
  • Fox Sports "power rankings" for Major League Baseball: Look who is #3. But let's not buy World Series tickets just yet.
  • I don't know how I write this stuff every day.

"Anybody remember Joe Bob Brooks movie reviews?"
I think you're thinking of Joe Bob Briggs. And yes, I remember they were...different

As for cars, I'd love to have a 1929 Deusenberg. I'm saving my change.

I thought it was Joe Bob Briggs, but whatever....he was hilarious. He and his "girl friend of the week" with her big ol' Texas hair!

Anonymous said...

Joe Bob Briggs (at least the guy who wrote under that pseudonym) had a column in Texas Monthly awhile back.

The G37 is a great car, better than that pile you drive now. Of course, anything would be better than a domestic. Somewhat of a mid-life (okay, late-life) crisis?

And a PHP-based classifieds, you're in craigslist territory now. barronslist?

I'm glad you do write this stuff every day. Don't stop.

I think you need to get the Audi S5in black.

No "Casual Encounters" section on the Wise County classifieds? Boo.

last time i went to the state fair i was robbed by to guys that jumped in my car at a red light. they left me and the car ok but broke with no keys behind an apartment building surrounded by tenents. ill just say if they had had ak-47's id would have felt like our troops in "blackhawk down" but i didnt have a gun. had to run for my life until i found a cop about 5 blocks away. he told me he was off duty but his replacement would be here in a little bit and he could help me.

midway or not ill never go back to that "hood"

BG, I've heard the Denton paper ran some kind of article about a "Cheesus" ... found by somebody in Denton county; you know, a cheetoh shaped like Jesus. I understand that they may put it up on Ebay. Sounds like blog material to me.

Excerpt of a movie review by JBB - from Wiki:
"No dead bodies. One hundred seventeen breasts. Multiple aardvarking. Lap dancing. Cage dancing. Convenience-store dancing. Blindfold aardvarking. Blind-MAN aardvarking. Lesbo Fu. Pool cue-fu. Drive-In Academy Award nominations for Tane McClure. Joe Bob says check it out." "Aardvarking" is Brigg's euphemism for sexual intercourse."

Diito on the Firehouse, service is kind of slow though

just sayin'

IMHO, the Infiniti G37 is one of the nicest looking cars available. Before you drop $40-50k though, take a look at the 09 Nissan Maxima or the 370Z. I am in the process of trying to decide between a G37x sedan and a Maxima. Living in the north, the G37x gets a slight edge.

Over the last few years Nissan/Infiniti continues to crush the European cars (Audi/BMW/Volvo) in terms of value, looks, and performance.

Scott Sams is a complete idiot!!

The Nelson tournament will be rockin' this year with bands in the pavillion which is now open late and now you can buy beer all over the course. Adam Scott is the returning hot champion, Phil M. is back, the weather will be great. The strippers have returned to the pavillion in full force. You'll feel right at home.

From the family truckster to a coupe, I smell midlife crisis.

I'm glad you do write this stuff every day and I hope you will keep writing it. I enjoy reading it.

The "Cheesus" was on Craigslist a few months ago and yes, Barry did put it in the blog. It was to hilarious!

8:45 a.m. Let me guess you paid those "hoods" to let you park behind their complex? If you park on the state fair property and leave before dark you'll probably be okay.
Also, go in a group...

My iTouch 2G is my favourite piece of pocket technology. I love my BlackBerry Bold and especially love the fact it is wifi so I do not have to use my data plan for every single megabyte I transmit.
.

All I know about the Infiniti G37 is that it looks awesome in Platinum or Amethyst Graphite with dark gray and burled wood interior. Black is always smoking hot (especially in the summer) but only looks good when it is clean. The Moonlight White and Liquid Platinum with light gray interior look like crap. I did not bother with any of the other craptacular colours. Glad to be such a help. *;).

I played on a Frisbee Golf team while in college. It is scads of great fun.
.

Does anyone really need to be able to eat, year round, the garbage sold on the State Fair midway?

I have a Nissan Pathfinder (I know mom car) but still the gas mileage is incredible. My family drove from Corpus Christi to Rhome on one tank of gas. Truly awesome!

8:45 the got in my car at a red light, read the story. thank God my family wasnt with me.

Heh...sauce squirt.

There are a lot of tools playing frisbee golf on that Park Glen Course.

The Quizno's up on 377 is better.

Adolf Oliver Bush said...

I hate to dis-agree with B.G., but oil and natural gas do need to inch up and itsa not a bad thing.

We don't need to be paying $4.00 for gas, but $70.00 oil and $6.00mcf gas would perk the Texas economy back up.

Hmmm, a moaner or a screamer?

Got stuck in that joke of a tar pit yesterday @ 6pm. Since I get out of town early in the morning, any chance some of you can keep those of us who work in the Metroplex updated on any potential traffic snarls? I guess my alternative is to take 407 to 2264?

Anonymous said...

8:45, 9:44 Still, nice neighborhood. Lock the doors. I prob. missed the "at a red light jumped in your car" business because my brain was having to work over time due to your lack of correctly spelling words &/or use of capital letters. My bad.

9:54...did your monthly gas lease check drop? Sucks, huh? The rest of us like the cheap gas!

People in Wise County need the oil and gas market to be strong. Almost every job around here is affected by that market either directly or indirectly.
UGH! High gas or no job??? I don't like that choice.

You should take a look at the Jaguar XF. The XF has been out for a year already but I just received my 2010 XF's and they are now coming with a 5.0L V8 putting out 385 horses. The XFR has 510 horses.

It's been a while since I've heard about Stephen York. Is he still in jail? Has he shown any remorse?

Adolf Oliver Bush said...

10:24, Adolf here. Read 10:37's comments as they are exactly what I was pointing out.

Cheap gas with no job is not-a- good. Spending all your money on gas is not-a-good. Balance is what we need.

Yes, I have some royalty coming in, but my comments were common sense, not greed.

You are clearly dim-witted if you cannot see that too cheap gas is not good for anyone.

HHL said...

g37 is a great car, but you oughta go for the 370z. get the 6spd tranny.

or, why not go the full mid-life crisis and get the GT-R?

Anonymous said...

The Acura TL is the best car in that class from a performance, quality and technology standpoint. From a looks standpoint, it's either love it or hate it. I love it, it is very distinctive.

Anonymous said...

How bout you get a GT-R and Beat MVPMotorsports' World Record at the Drag Strip!!!

moma247 said...

10:37 & Adolf have it right, like it or not, at least for my household. The hubby works in oilfield construction. If prices are too low, there's no work and we can't afford to go and do. If prices are higher, there's work but we can't afford the gas to go and do. It's hard not to look at it as a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

Oh great, the over-50 Frisco guy spreading the AIDS thing has totally wrecked it for the rest of us sleezeballs. Heard that he drives an Audi - chicks did 'em.

10:23 WOW that's your comeback? An apology would have made you out to be the good guy. What a horrible person you are.

Anonymous said...

10:23 is the horrible person and YOU are name calling. You're peas in a pod. 10:23 has already been called a nag. Wasn't that over? Don't you think "horrible person" is a little harsh?

the comment on the oil price closingon 60$ a barrell and gas proces rising is a good one but who here can explain to me why we saw for every dollar the price rose on oil we saw a close to a 10 cent rise in price at the pump but when the price fell that didnt hold true we only saw a slight decrease in price makes one wonder

Wow, I'm picking up some real PMS vibes here....

:) hey BG, I always heard frisbee golf was a stoner's sport?!

Anonymous said...

11:28 - Although the new TL has a great engine and great interior, it is too pricey and looks like a Saturn.

soz said...

disc golf is loads of fun (not all players are stoners)! it's way cheaper than golf golf, and most courses are public. playin' in a 72 hole tourney next weekend; it may kill me.

i saw a "cheesus" story yesterday...different one?

infinity? i don't like the accents in their commercials. man up and just get a porche ;)

i love my iPhone, too. gonna buy a app developers kit so's i can get in on the cash grab...

With gas prices going up, who are you going to blame since Bush is not in office? Probably not the messiah, Obama, since he does no wrong. Can't wait to see the liberal/leftist/socialist spin on why prices have gone up.

Anonymous said...

Big Oil raises gas prices. They are untouchable. They raise it tillthe public screams, then lower it awhile, then back up again. Irrespective of who is in office......since the 20's.

That supply and demand crap is just that crap
