That Western Center Blvd Intersection

Edit: Yeah, not the best picture. But there was a guy inside the car that was rear ended and two cops were already on the scene. No one seemed particularly excited. Then an ambulance comes screaming up -- ok, they guy's gonna claim neck injuries. Then, a couple of minutes later, a big ol' firetruck comes screaming up. Why do the firetrucks always show up?

I'm sure it was a "coincidence" that you were on the scene? Did you walk over to "see if everyone was okay" and then "trip" sending a stack of business cards a-flying?

Just a little attorney humor.

You should know all this stuff, Barry. I'm disappointed in you.

1. Because firemen are smarter than the po-pos, and definitely better prepared to deal with trauma victims.

Or, 2. To let the ambulance chasers, er lawyers, know where to go.

I believe that most cities require a fire truck to respond whenever an ambulance is called, even if someone is just sick at their home. I am not sure of the specifics of that, you might have to talk with a fireman who could tell you more.

Agree with Jarhead, scary but I agree with him.

Skippy, I am sure you gave the guy your business card. That's what you ambulance chasers do. By the headline, I would have thought there would be a picture of a wreck in an intersection. But you did us proud and chased him into the parking lot.

Firetrucks show up so that paramedics can focus on treating the patients while the firefighters (who are normally paramedics also) can carry stretchers etc.

A little clarification...
The city of Fort Worth does not run ambulances. They contract that service out to med star or rural metro.

Every Fire fighter in fort worth is at least an EMT, with many being full paramedics. This allows them to put ambulance level care at the firehouse without the cost of the ambulance.

The firetrucks are spread throughout the city better than the ambulances. When an ambulance is needed they dispatch the FD to give initial care and to stabilize the patient for transport. Then, when the ambulance arrives they are usually ready to just load and go.

Firetrucks get sent because they block traffic well, they are needed in the event a fire erupts from the accident, as stated before-most are staffed with EMT's and they look cool running down the road. It also gives the guys at the FD something to do.

Fire trucks show up so that it increases their number of calls. Then, they can ask for more money to hire more people and buy more stuff because they have so many calls.

Firetrucks in Decatur get in the damn way...........

Firetrucks show up for man power. Firetrucks show up in case jaws of life are needed to cut someone out. Firetrucks show up to help extricate a person from a vehicle, which may take up to 4 or 5 personnel when someone is put on a backboard. Firetrucks show up in case there is an overload of patients. Firetrucks show up in case the patient weighs in at 300 lbs. Firetrucks show up in case a chopper is needed to land and could use a landing zone. Firetrucks show up to block traffic and help protect the paramedics and patients. Firetrucks show up in case there is a fire or haz-mat situation. Firetrucks show up to help with crowd control. Firetrucks show up to increase there fire runs and then get more money. Firetrucks show up because when you call 911 for any emergency other than police related situations, that's who comes.

I agree with 9:45 somewhat. The major reason the FD shows up is for assistance to the medical staff. HOWEVER, if they are not needed they should go home! I passed a wreck in Decatur the other day and saw a lot of firemen standing with their thumbs up their butt! AND I am paying for the fancy Expeditions they drive (Chief and Deputy Chief) as well as the diesel they use driving the Fire Truck all over town......I am supportive of the FD in all of Wise County, but I am pissed at the funding the Decatur FD wastes on stuff. Lets do it right if we want it to work!

Hey I have a question: I had a wreck a week ago and the EMS came and checked on me. So did a "huge" firetruck as Barry described above. I was not hurt, the EMS had me sign a form saying I was ok, then the FD came and asked me the same questions. I am also a nurse and I think that I am not required to give the FD my name and or address. Are they, the FD going to send me a bill? They better not, I already pay enough for the FD..........I know I have to sign the EMS stuff, but I refused to give the FD any information.

all fire runs require a report, and they were just getting information to complete their report. We are nation of stats and numbers, and its getting worse every day. As a paramedic in my city, every patient has a report on them, and it requires 45-90 minutes for each patient, whether that patient is transported or not. Not all cities have as much paperwork as we do, but the rest will eventually get there. In these times,(according to administration) documentation is what will save your butt in court.

Well 7:20, Im glad you agree with me Somewhat, since I have 27 years as a professional firefighter and 24 years as paramedic. Half of my time is on the ambulance, the other half on the fire engine. I think that I speak from experience. You can only speculate why we are standing around when you drive by. That person deserves to be given the best, since he/she pays our salaries also.
