From yesterday's press conference about nominee Harriett Miers:
"THE PRESIDENT: Correct. And I'll say it again: There is no litmus test.
Q But she is not someone you interviewed for the job that you didn't know. You've known her a long time. Have you never discussed abortion with her?
THE PRESIDENT: In my interviews with any judge, I never ask their personal opinion on the subject of abortion.
Q In your friendship with her, you've never discussed abortion?
THE PRESIDENT: Not to my recollection have I ever sat down with her -- what I have done is understand the type of person she is and the type of judge she will be. "
He's never discussed abortion with her? No way.

OK, I'll Leave Bush Alone For A While After This

George W. "When we had the talk, she was standing and I was sitting."
The Republicans don't want to overturn Roe Vs Wade, they would not have a hot button social issue to campaign on.
Voters would decide on issues like the economy, health care, social security...or otherwise, vote in their own best interest!
They would lose their base or have to come up with another hot button issue...some social issue that is going to take our country straight to hell in a hand basket.
Like .... Wearing short shorts and showing the belly button.
Well, that is as good as anything. It is the woman's resposiblility, not the man's.
Or if the Supreme Court overturns Roe Vs Wade, start in on the use of contraceptives...can find where God told us to multiply like rabbits. Women use to have 10 kids...no big deal!
And then go to the next sin, stone women who are caught in adultery...
Just live according to the laws of the old testament in a world ruled by men.
You know what? I have deeply close friends that I've never "discussed" abortion with! They kind of know how I feel, I kind of know how they feel, but it's not something they we "put on the table" at lunch.
Bush Jr. will go down in history with my ultimate respect if he has, indeed, discussed the abortion issue outright, and formulated a Supreme Court that will challenge Roe VS. Wade.
And, I'm a woman. I do not, however, feel that my "rights" with my body entail entitlement in taking the life of another.
I also have the right to not go around giving out sex unless I'm prepared to face the consequences.
I think he may not have ever discussed it with her. I think he probably just assumed she was Pro-Life.
I don't think they will overturn Roe vs. Wade. If they do the Republican Party will take dive. I am mostly conservative but I would abandon ship if they overturned it.
It isn't about religion to me. It is about the rights of women.
It is really amazing to me that the Christian right is so outraged about her selection because she is not conservative enough. Those Supreme Court judges are supposed to administer the law irrespective of their personal opinions, interpreting the law and making decisions. For a judge interpreting the law, personal views shouldn't matter. But we have the Christian right whining about how they helped Bush get elected and now they want to pick a Supreme Court justice. What supreme egotism to blatantly make those kind of statements in the media. They want a "strict constructionist"--well, a strict constuctionist doesn't let personal views come into the decision making process, so what difference should it make if they are are a conservative or a liberal? They have this idea that they have a right to they control Bush's decision making. It's time they were put in their place. They have a right to have an opinion about anything--just like homosexuals, atheists, WASPs, immigrants, and anyone else in this great country. But the "Christian" monniker should not give them the right to make his selections for him, or to be outraged when he doesn't do what they want him to. Attaboy Bush.
Most women are not going to allow a 50, 60, 70 or 80 year old man to make decisions on what they can and cannot do with their bodies. Want to be a prostitute? Go to Nevada. Want to dance in the nude? Get a city licence in Dallas. Want to be a porno star? Go to Calf. Want an abortion in a Roe v. Wade reversed society? Find an scrupulous Dr., a needy nurse practicioner, or any third year med. student w/o ethics and throw a little money for the rental of the back alley room and a few meds and your in business. A reversale of Roe v.Wade will assure three things: 1) The privileged and wealthy will find a way to have an abortion; 2)the poor and underprivileged will have babies; 3) the lower and middle class of society will pay for number 2. As wrong and immoral as abortion is, a society cannot for very long legislate their accepted brand of morallity and survive. Not in this country, not in the Middle East, not in South America, no where. And if you are of the mistaken belief this is wrong, I encourage to go back to school and learn your US and World history, or just look at the Talaban.
Goodness...."hot topics" always make for cranky pants.
Wizard, I agree with you.
"Abortion is a reflection that we have not met the needs of women. Women deserve better than abortion." -- The American Feminist
"When a man steals to satisfy hunger, we may safely conclude that there is something wrong in society--so when a woman destroys the life of her unborn child, it is an evidence that either by education or circumstances she has been greatly wronged." --Mattie Brinkerhoff, 'The Revelation,' Sept. 2, 1869
I just figure that women, in America or the Middle East, deserve help and assistance BEFORE they have to "choose" to have their baby sucked out of them into a metal pan. And, live with the emotional repercussions for the rest of their lives.
you said it wizard
Whatever happenend to the man birth control pill, men should accept resposibility as well as women. Usually the woman is left with the child & ends up on welfare & we all pay for that.
Amen, Wizard and 8:42 anon!
It isn't as if there is a full docket of cases to overthow Rowe v Wade. There are many other, more frequent issues of juriprudence to consider. Obviously, our society does not deem the innocent, unborn child worthy of our protection.
Ugh. Is he out of office yet?
