More about Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers. . .
From today's New York Times: "By day's end, [head of Focus on the Family's James Dobson], one of the most influential evangelical conservatives, welcomed the nomination. '
Some of what I know I am not at liberty to talk about,' he said in an interview, explaining his decision to speak out in support of Ms. Miers. He declined to discuss his conversations with the White House. "
How is that James Dobson knows more about Harriet Miers than the Senate will ever know?

How much do you think Slick Willy told him about GInsburg?
Come on! Does anyone really believe that Bush had no idea what Ms. Miers' position is on abortion before he nominated her? Maybe he never had a direct conversation with her about the issue, although I doubt even that, but he knows her position on the subject. With the exhaustive vetting process for any nominee, I can guarantee the Bush staff, and therefore Bush, knows exactly where she comes down on the issue. Like I've said elsewhere, I think the Christian right actually approves of her but is giving us an idea in the media that they don't, so the Dems will go easier on her in the confirmation hearings. Mr. Dobson's statement kind of bears that out.
Why would anyone be for Murder(ABORTION)?
Perhaps because not everyone(surprise!) believes like you do.
Perhaps because some people believe that the two are mutually exclusive, that abortion is not murder. Such people have an absolute right under our Constitution to believe this, just as abortion opponents have a right to believe that life begins at conception. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights guarantee it.
I am not "for" murder or abortion, and I doubt anyone else is either, so 1:48's question is a little oversimplistic. I am "for" a woman's right to choose to have a child or not. Those who want a "strict constructionist" who adheres to the "rule of law"and a judge who is not a judicial activist on the Supreme Court better realize what that really means. A strict constructionist who is not a judicial activist who respects the rule of law will respect the Court's decision in Roe v. Wade, giving a woman the right to choose, because to overturn this decision would be to ignore the "rule of law" and engage in "judicial activism". I get a real chuckle out of people who claim to be Christian conservatives talking about how they don't want anyone on the Supreme Court who doesn't respect the rule of law, strict constructionists and judicial activism. If they want Roe v. Wade overturned, they better get the opposite.
It isn't difficult to know more about anything, than the Senators who will no doubt hound her about future case opinions that may never happen.
SO what you are saying is that if I kill my cats, dogs, horses etc...
I mean I lety my horses go without food for a couple of weeks I go to jail or prison.
But If I am hearing you right I can have an Abortion and its ok to kill a baby? what is wrong with this pitcure?
I respect Dobson, but don't think he has any business commenting on political matters. He could do more good just praying for our leaders and urging others to do so..then just let God take care of it, which will happen in His timing.
10:27 It is not a baby! If a woman is 6 weeks pregant, and by nature the fetus is aborted, what happens? There is no funeral.
At what time does a person have rights? At birth. When does a person have a soul? The Judeo-Christian religon believes at the first breath of life.
All those arguments were made in the case of Roe Vs Wade. Our society, laws and many religous beliefs don't support that a fetus is a baby or a person with rights at the exact moment of conception.
If you follow that logic or religious belief, than you would have to believe like the Catholic church that every egg and every sperm is life. Therefore, you would be committing a sin to use contraceptives.
Abortions should be safe, legal and rare. It is not murder.
Life is messy. The rare decision for a woman to have an abortion should not be made by the Legislature. It should be made between her, her God and her doctor.
If Miers is a right wing fundamentalist, a vote to overturn Roe, would force women to back street abortionists. Or they would attempt self abortions leaving the fetus damaged resulting in serious brain injuries upon delivery. Back in the days before Roe, the state hospitals were full of brain injured children that the mothers didn't want.
Also, what about rape or incest victims? Or what about when the life of the mother is in danger. Back in the 60's women would not deliver their babies at Catholic hospitals because they would always save the baby before the mother. Their maternity wards closed.
Going backward is not the answer. Women should have the right to choose in rare cases without the government deciding. It is a basic liberty granted under the constitution.
HEY, if we outlaw abortion how are we gonna cut the crime rate?
7:17 am:
Assuming you believe the Bible, please comment on this.
Psalm 139 (NIV):
13For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
16 your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
For the above blogger(s) who seem to think that abortion is a "rare" thing; I assure you, it is not. I am a young woman, and before I was even out of college, I knew at least three women who had had an abortion...not just thinking about it, but had it. And not because their own lives were at risk or because they were raped...they just weren't "ready". It happens a lot more than people think. But noone, right wing, left wing, rich or poor has the answer to this complex issue. As the law stands, it is the woman's choice. She is who has to live with the decision. But who's to say if that's good enough? Like I said...no answer.
If you believe God is the Creator of life, the answer is clear and it is not found in the constitution or some interpretation there of.
If a woman "chooses" to abort she is taking a life created by God. That decision can not be situtational (i. e. I'm just not ready), it is wrong.
It really comes down to your beliefs. If you believe God is soverign (in control) you honor His creation, If not then a woman can choose whatever she wants.
...if we are going to overturn abortion........then lets create some laws that involve the men who get a woman pregnant under circumstances of rape and/or incest....
.....find him......
and cut him!
I guess that is a variation on the Old Testament "eye for an eye" law.
anon 2:49 - likely not a Biblical view, but something in my genetic makeup. I was told the story that my great grandpa's friend's daughter was raped. Gramps and his buddy found the guy and shot him.
...those 1800's may have had more going than we thought.
:)
anon @ 2:49 Can you find that in the bible an eye for an eye? I would like to see where it is?
Don't believe it's in there
Actually it is in the New Test. In Matthew 5. Jesus refering to the traditions of the O. T. times.
37But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
38Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
(KJV)
It is perfectly okay for you to think abortion is a sin. I tend to agree with you. However, it is not acceptable for you to force your religious ideas on others. There are Agnostics, Atheists, Wiccan, Druids, Hindus, Muslims, Buddists, Scientologists, Satanists, and many others in this country. I think if you believe abortion is wrong, then don't have one. If you are so concerned about children then maybe you should take in a foster child or adopt an unwanted child. There are many many children here in the US and not enough people willing to adopt or foster.
