Sun Microsystems and Google have announced they are teaming up in the are of office software. The field, currently dominated by Microsoft's Office 97/2000/XP, might become actually competitive.
Sun is behind "Open Office" a little known, and free, software package that includes word processing, a spreadsheet and a "powerpoint" equivalent. It's great for those that don't want to shell out big bucks for MS Office or for those that just hate Microsoft.
Open Office info is here (you can download it for free - but it's a huge file so you'll need a high speed connection - or buy the CD for 10 bucks on Ebay).

I don't really see competition happening. I think Microsoft has such a grip on the market no one will get a foot in the door. It is nice they are trying but they aren't the first.
But see that is the thing. Open Office is an open source program. Which means information about source code is shared amongst developers. While Microsoft on the otherhand locks their source code down-because that is supposedly "their" trade secret. Sun and Microsoft have been going at it for the last 15 years. Now with Open Office is very similar to Microsoft Office in functionality and design-and it imports word, excel, and powerpoint documents. Microsoft sees the demand for this "open source" market-their not stupid. What will happen, I predict by 2007 Sun Microsystems will be swallowed up by Microsoft-and Microsoft will once again grow larger.
I would also watch Google as well. Google is planning on venturing into the television and Wireless Nationwide ISP sector-Microsoft sees this as well. It is only a matter of time before a major buyout will happen.
