New York City was placed under alert this afternoon about a possible terrorist attack on the subway system.
Two oddities:
(1) The "National Terror Alert" color scheme was not raised.
(2) Mayor Michael Bloomberg held a press conference (video here) to warn New Yorkers about the threat but then said "I'm going to take the subway going up town and tomorrow morning I'm going to do what I always do: get on the train and go to work . . . . "
So just what is it that New Yorkers are supposed to do?

The only thing New Yorkers can do is to be on alert. What else are they supposed to do? Stop their daily lives because of a threat, that may/may not happen?
Use the subway!!! Please be advised that you might DIE!!!!!!!!!
What do we do when their is a terrorsit alert? Have plastic and duct tape handy or just go shopping!
Must keep the economy going.
At least this got people's attention off all the investigations, indictments and future indictments!
Anon 1 & 3,
You guys are both right. You cannot just stop daily activity to these idiots. If you do, you are giving into their ideologies-which is what they want us to do. They want the American people to be scared. That is why they move slowly, attacking every couple of years without incident on targets we would never think twice about. I just wish sometimes people would stop living in a dream world-that America is the most powerful nation. We are not obviously now-and it will only get worse. I was there in New York City for a conference when the planes hit the towers, it did feel like the end of the world. But, the next day we continued riding subways, taking busses, and later that year consumer spending was at an alltime high-they say it is due to the Patriotic symbolism of 9/11
If I was of Arab descent, I would be nervous getting on the subway!!
I agree with anon 8:03 - just another smokescreen. Bush issued his list of terrorist threats that were averted so far.
It's just Rove, rovin as usual!
Boy 8:03 and 9:30 - Your gonna feel stupid if this is or was to be another real attack and not just "chatter". I guess you are the people who said "Bush didn't do enough" ? What gives with you guys anyway? Lets see - The bomb goes off on the Subway and many people are killed and injured and we have ANOTHER hearing to see who's fault it was or who didn't act when they had knowledge that there might be a bomb and WHO ARE YOU POINTING THE FINGER AT NOW. (YES- I'M TALKING LOUD) YOU PEOPLE MAKE ME SO ........ ANGRY)
11:34:
You're right. The same people shoveling manure about this being a smokescreen are the ones who will go off if there is an attack.
(The Bush administration didn't do enough to prevent, they knew about the threat and didn't act, they didn't respond quick enough...)
NYC is a city of 8,000,000. people. I've been there. If a bomb goes off at Penn Station thousands will be hurt or killed.
I agree with 11:34, they get critized for letting us know & then they get critized for not letting us know if something should happen. As far as using the warnings as a smoke screen, you are totally paranoid, that is a stupid statement. Some of you people want to blame the government for everything, if it is so bad, feel free to renounce your citizenship & go live in another country. It's easy for us to complain, but we here in Wise County have never been a direct target. Why don't you people tell us what you would do instead, I would be interested in hearing YOUR SOLUTIONS!!! I expect a response.
11:51... excellent point, I to am anxious to hear a response to that one !!!
Some one needs a hug today!!!! they could move to Texas and drive an SUV and they would not have to worry about riding the subway.....Just Kidding.....
Good intellegence will be the best defense to prevent terrorist attacks like happened in London.
They got on top of it really quick.
If they cry wolf too many times, people won't take the warnings seriously.
We live in an open society and are vunerable to those who hate us and want to kill us.
We can't live in fear.
I agree we can't live in fear, but we as a society have every right to know when we are being threatened, I'm sure you would rather be alerted to any possible danger then oblivious & taken by surprise. I believe all warnings should all be taken seriuosly.
AT this point, I am not ready to criticize the government for warnings where the crisis was averted. The warnings could have aided them in being averted.
You know. I hate South Park. But, I went to see Team America World Police when a friend drug me to it. I was expecting to hate it. It was definitely coarse and disrespectful but the message was a positive one. Basically, it said yeah, we screw up a lot of the time and we have some nutty leaders but you know what? We are out there trying to do the right thing which is more than we can say for a lot of other countries. Look at the food for oil scandals and illegal arms sales to countries that support terrorism. We aren't perfect but we are trying to help. Even as much as we sometimes bumble around we still do a lot of good.
The warnings must be credible. The public must see the government in action...more police, dogs, survellance, intelligence.
The public needs to be told what to look for and what to avoid. The terrorist groups in London must have done something to make their neighbors suspect.
We will be hit by another terrorist attack. Will we have a warning? I doubt it.
But the government is stopping some from happening. The problem is the one that is not stopped.
Until we deal with the root cause of terrorism it will not end. We can't go to Iraq and simply kill all of them.
