The Meth Book-In Photo Lady
Remember our meth girl? Well, here's a letter about her in todays Morning News:
Re: "Addict's photos make big picture hard to miss," by Steve Blow, Sunday Metro.
Mr. Blow's column misses the big picture. Scare tactics have never stopped kids from using drugs. Look at the studies on our most famous scare tactic program, DARE. The Roseanne Holland booking photos do not show a woman insufficiently frightened as a child. They show a woman arrested and imprisoned because of her addiction, instead of being treated for it. How would Roseanne Holland have looked after 10 years if she had been arrested and imprisoned for diabetes? Would she have lived that long?

I am not sure I understand "scare tactics" as it related to the DARE program. The DARE program does not scare anyone into not doing drugs. It tries to teach children that there are other alternatives than using drugs, avioding peer pressure, teaching personal responsibilities, etc. As far as any drug educational programs go, DARE has its share of problems, but teaching kids not to take drugs by scaring them is not one of them.
Also, what the heck does diabetes have to do with meth addiction? I'm not sure I understand the woman's correlation there. Also, if a scare tactic prevents a child from doing drugs...are they worse off for being subjugated to the scare tactic? Pictures speak a thousand words...

That woman's photos of decline are all OVER the place! It's like the 'net email forward-to-your-eight-best-friends-and-their-mothers crossover to the newspapers. Very odd, and a bit of a backwards Deja Vu.
Her last pic is enough to keep me off Tylenol too......
I agree that Meth addition has no comparison with diabetes. I am sure somewhere along the line she was referred to drug counseling.
diabetes isn't ILLEGAL
Meth, cocaine, these are both addictions that are heartbreaking to all - even the user. If there was an easy "fix" - my daughter would be here now.....
Try telling the EEOC that addiction's not an illness. You can't always fire a drug addict who seeks counseling. While her analogy is not exact, it is in the same ballpark. We send addicts to prison all day long. Why don't we lock up alcoholics too?
I'm just tired of spending my taxes on something that we know doesn't work. And yet we continue turning potential future contributing members of society into career criminals, thus robbing our own society of possible resources. Drug users locked up with killer? Those crimes aren't even in the same ballpark.
To "diabetes isn't illegal"
New laws are written all the time. If not, you could still go down to the hardware store and buy dynamite, and women still wouldn't be allowed to vote. Society should decide what is legal or not, and things should be reviewed from time to time to see what is working and what's not. Illegal does not equal immoral.
Diabetes is a STUPID comparison parallel for methamphetamine addiction.
I understand that all people don't think alike. I'd really like to uderstand your viewpoint.
The "stupid parallel argument" doesn't disclose any reasons. To me both are harmful, both are largely preventable, and more importantly both can be treated.
Please, if you would, explain why it's stupid. That way we can complete an exchange of ideas, and hopefully we will both gain some insight about the differences in people's thought processes. At the very least we'll each have another viewpoint to consider.
Easy--nobody CHOOSES to have diabetes. It's a physical affliction. Now an irresponsible individual who CHOOSES to do drugs--meth--and gets addicted is suffering the consequences of their own actions.
People use drugs/injections to treat a disease....people who do meth are treating a sick recreation.
Point well made Comment4U. First let me say thank you for your answer. I do appreciate your answering me. I thoroughly enjoy this Blog because of the variance of opinions. It was a good exchange of ideas.
People don't consciously choose to have diabetes, but I'm not sure that meth addicts choose to be addicts. Addiction is a byproduct of risky behavior. Much like type 2 diabetes is a byproduct of obesity (over-eating being defined as risky behavior is a matter of opinion, but I also recall the head of the Air Force medical program saying that amphetamine "go pills" were perfectly safe during the trial of the airmen that accidentally bombed the Canadians...so amphetamine safety also appears to be a matter of opinion.)
Like obesity addiction slowly takes over a person (although some have a predisposition in both cases).
I would like to think that medical care would be provided to people regardless of the risks they take. Parachuting seems sick recreation to me, but I'd probably still help a person if their chute didn't open. Compassion may not be entirely a human trait but it is a large part of what makes us human.
Humans are inherently risk takers. Because of risk takers America was discovered, and people have walked on the moon. At the same time taking risks creates junkies and fatal traffic accidents.
Thanks again.
yes.this is good thing of her imprisoned.having drugs is illigal..
