I thought WMDs were the reason we went into Iraq? Condoleezza Rice on Meet The Press this morning told us what the reason was:
"But the fact of the matter is that when we were attacked on September 11, we had a choice to make. We could decide that the proximate cause was al-Qaeda and the people who flew those planes into buildings and, therefore, we would go after al-Qaeda and perhaps after the Taliban and then our work would be done and we would try to defend ourselves. Or we could take a bolder approach, which was to say that we had to go after the root causes of the kind of terrorism that was produced there, and that meant a different kind of Middle East. And there is no one who could have imagined a different kind of Middle East with Saddam Hussein still in power."
I don't recall that "choice" ever being expressed to the American people prior to the war.

Well, this is interesting, because there has been a lot of talk about how the President and his top people, Chaney, Rumsfield, and Rove had this idea of a "New Middle East". That they had put it together with the feeling that Iraq would embrace the US Troops as did Europe when it was liberated from the Nazis. I doubt that Congress which has the power to declare war would have committed the resources now locked into place had our President been candid about "his agenda"! Expect a big retreat by Ms. Rice in the next few days from these words.
C'mon lets all don't have a hate Condi fest here.
I would hardly characterize atticus' comments as a Condi hate fest..as usual, a little overreaching by condoleesa. Well said, atticus. I have an idea that Ms. Rice's comments were crafted well after we failed to find Osama, and had to come up with a way to attempt to justify to the American people why we invaded Iraq. After all, there were no WMDs in Iraq, there never was the capability to build WMDs in Iraq, and Osama never headquartered in Iraq. Oh, and by the way, I'm a conservative Republican who thinks this invasion of Iraq was a huge mistake, done because we couldn't find Osama and we had to do something to convince America we were going to avenge 9/11, and had everything to do with oil. It will be viewed historically as one of the biggest blunders by any president ever.
I was kidding! Sheessshhh
Ms Rice and Mr Bush have no credibility. They lie. They cover up. They should resign and allow better people to serve.
anon 12:10, Geeeze, if they were to resign, then we'd get Cheney. And if you'll recall, he was regarded as the "real" president till W got hold of that bull horn in NYC. The mess in this government is partly Cheney's and Rumsfeld and the neo-cons who managed the policy development.
What we need is a smarter electorate in 2006 and 2008.
Whether you like them or not, it is who got elected. It isn't going to change so all the complaining won't make a bit of difference.
Hey Connie, If I'm unable to research the candidates next time will you tell us your choices? Then I'll just be able to vote the other way and feel certain I voted for the better candidates!
