Businesses pay to get their sites higher on the search list or pay to have their site appear at the top or on the side bar. Ads cost from .01 - .25 (some even higher) per click. They are also expanding into local markets working similar to the online yellow pages.
Remember stock price does not always relate to profit but potential profit.

I don't own Google stock either. To all of you business geniuses out there, though...how exactly does a search engine make money?
My only guess (considering I am definitely not a genius) would be paid advertisements.
