"DEAR ABBY: I am the mother of four children, ages 18 to 25. A 'practice' they discuss among their friends is the 'rite of turning 21,' which is to drink 21 shots of hard alcohol. I'd like to think my children are intelligent and informed enough to know how dangerous this could be, but when I mention it, I get the standby, 'Everyone does it' or 'It's fine.' I worry myself sick over this, not only for my own kids, but for all young adults. Please shed some light on this practice. Perhaps they will listen to you." . . . .

I don't see where the "everybody does it" thing comes from. I turned 21 not too many years ago, and I never recall anyone telling me I should do 21 shots. Speaking from personal experience....21 would be pretty stupid. The most I've ever done at once was 7 (with quite a bit of beer). I was sooooo sick after that too. I cannot imagine tripling that....no way.
I see kids doing way stupider stuff than I did just a few years back. It's very scary.
"Way stupider" I bet the English teacher loved you. JK I never drank shots when I was a kid. I just drank straight from the bottle. I think they are doing plenty of the same stuff we used to do, but just doing it alot earlier. Yes, and I thought your generation was doing "way stupider" stuff than mine. When I turned 21, I was through with my partying (and married shortly after). I've never heard of "21 shots."
Newsflash: The morality of this world is not going to get any better. Here it is again, liberals. . . READ YOUR BIBLE!!
I never heard of the doing 21 shots thing. I grew up in Ohio where it was okay to drink (at least 3-2 beer) at 18. Of course the kids in the community all started drinking a lot earlier and a lot harder stuff. I personally only ever drank once before I turned 18. I had just turned 15 and it was a bad mistake on many levels.
I've been to several 21st birthday bashes...never have I seen someone attempt 21 shots. But I, like all of you now, have heard about it. The people that choose to attempt such a thing probably cave very easily to peer pressure, feel invincible and may have self destructive tendencies...but I'm with Barry...reaching them through Dear Abby is not going to happen. 21 year olds are considered adults and should act as such and TRY to be more responsible. Sorry about the Dr. Phil-esque monologue. But 'tis true.
