The NBA has come up with some insane dress policy which will prevent players from throwing down a hip hop look. "Players must wear 'business casual' attire for team activities. If they are not in uniform but are seated on the bench, they are required to wear a sports jacket. No T-shirts, headgear or chains are permitted while on team business."
Amazingly, Charles Barkley appeared on the Tonight Show tonight and said the new policy was "fantastic" because young fans can be influenced negatively by NBA stars: "The problem is, when these young black [fans] go out dressed like that in the real world, they not gonna get jobs."
Say what? Let's not change white perceptions but instead change black culture?

I think appearance no matter what color you are is important in a job interview. You recently posted a picture of a young man with a split tongue and tattoos and etc. His picture did not generally receive a positive reception. Would it be changing white culture to tell him it probably isn't a good idea to go to a job interview looking like that? I don't think so. I think telling him to cover up the tat's and keep his split tongue inside his mouth would be the right thing to do unless he was applying for a job as circus freak.
Don't lawyers tell their clients how to dress before going to court? Doesn't how they dress often affect perceptions in court?
I think the NBA brass is a bunch of hypocrites. THEY put all the jerseys on sale for everyone to buy, including the throwback jerseys that they have now outlawed. David Stern bought into the hip-hop era with a vengeance, just like all the apparel and shoe companies did. THE NBA made their milions and millions. It seems like Stern is biting the hand that feeds his league.
On the other hand, I heard Wed. that the NBA player reps never railed against this at all, so I guess the players need to blame their representatives for this...
Long Live Daniel Carver!
Long live Napoleon Dynamite
I fully agree with condoleesa........good point about the lawyer/client dressing. That's EXACTLY what they do...."make a good impression on the jury."
I'm sure that the Hall of Fame inductees have the understanding of not showing up for ceremonies in flipflops and Hawaiian shirts.
With the amount of money they make, the least they can do is wear a suit when asked. If they don't like it, find another job.
I'm agreeing with Condoleesa on this one too. White perception has nothing to do with it. Last time I checked employers consisted of males and females of every racial background you can imagine. Race is not the issue. It's about professionalism and tact.
Grow up Barry. You have to follow certain decorum and dress when you are at work. If you want to frolic around your house in throwback jerseys, gold chains or womens underwear, you can but at work there is a dress code to be followed.
The NBA isn't preventing these guys to wear anything they want to when not at work but AT THEIR JOB they must abide by a dress code. It's no different than what the vast majority of us face everyday.
Maybe they need an owner's dress code as well because while the Mavs are on the bench in their suits, Mark Cuban will be in the stands in his Mavs jersey and jeans. Or should he be able to wear what he wants since he owns the team? I must admit seeing Cuban in a suit just wouldn't be normal.
Anon @ 9:18...pretty harsh toward Barry there, aren't ya? If I read correctly, his comment is geared more toward Barkley's comment about young black men not getting jobs if they dress like the players they idolize. Don't shoot the messenger.
What's this about Barry in gold chains and women's underware?

Stop! You are making me hot again!
