As School Starts Up

DMN columnist Steve Blow had an unusually insightful column yesterday. An excerpt: Here's the myth: Schools educate children. Don't fall for it! Too many children have suffered already. Let me explain. Of course schools can help educate a child. But just like a book or a pencil, a school is only a tool. And a tool can only do so much. A book can't open itself. A pencil has no words of its own. And schools alone can't educate. Parents must be in charge of their children's education. To put it plainly: The success or failure of your child's education is up to you.

This, I believe.

Radio personality Paul Harvey (who used to be interesting before everyone had access to the same news he does) said a second ago that it would be 136 degrees in Iraq today. I seriously doubted that so I looked it up. The graphic from CNN indicates that the old guy wasn't exactly right but its still hot.

I had lunch at a seafood place called "Three Fins" today in Denton. Good stuff. Although it's oddly located behind a tire store across from Denton Mall.

There's No Betting At Bushwood

After giving up golf for a few years, I finally got the clubs out again the summer. And the results have been pleasant. Frustrating. But pleasant. Until Saturday when my good friend Joseph convinced me that playing the we should play Sky Creek Ranch in Keller. "It's no harder than anything else we've played," he said. Funny, I don't remember playing a course where your ball would disappear into some Grand Canyon like ravine every time you miss the green by three freakin' feet. And to make matters worse, we were caught in the biggest rainstorm of the summer on the 12th hole. The game was over. And that was probably a good thing.

Pop Up Ads

I was getting some complaints about the pop up ads that had been appearing ever since I started using the polls. Well, I shelled out some cash to upgrade the poll service so that the pop up ads would be eliminated. It may take a couple of days for all the bugs to be worked out.

I Thought That Looked Familiar

The cover of the latest Newsweek had a picture of Billy Graham with the title "Billy Graham In Twilight." The theme seemed oddly familiar. I was right. It looks like Time magazine was trying to send him to the exit in November of 1993 with the cover of "A Christian In Winter."
