Breaking: Bridgeport High Athletic Director / Head Football Coach Stepping Down

Stolen Messenger Photo (Credit Joe Duty)

I've heard his resignation is effective immediately but will be paid through January 2018.

I trust my sources, but I'm still awaiting official confirmation.

Developing . . . .

Edit: Matt Stepp at Dave Campbell's Texas Football confirms to me Henson is stepping down.

"Danny Henson has been Bridgeport ISD’s Director of Athletics and Head Football Coach for Bridgeport High since 1993. During his tenure he has led the Bridgeport Bulls in 33 playoff football games and has had 17 playoff football seasons. The Bull’s longest playoff run was in 2001 when the team competed in the Texas UIL State Semi-Final Football Game."

DONT LET THE DOOR HIT YA WHERE THE GOOD LORD SPLIT YA!

If true, he's done a lot for Bridgeport athletics. Quality people will apply for that job because of the program he has built. It's a much more attractive job than the one he inherited. People who are excited about him leaving, have no clue.

The school board did the right thing!
When your AD has no passion for the sport or the kids it's time to send them packing!!

I'm excited and I have a clue!
You OBVIOUSLY have no clue as to what's been going on at BISD.

He is retiring effective January 2018. He will remain an employee through that date. A new AD will be put in place prior to the 2017-2018 school year.

5:24 for the win !

I hope he applies for superintendent at Decatur.

Barry I know you post comments like 5:24's just to show racism is still alive. We get that. We know that. We don't need to read it everyday on here. Some things just need to be left out and that is one. The "n" word is offensive and ignorant. It's no wonder our world is in the shape it's in.

amen 8:19 Barry please remove it. That is uncalled for.

Talent pool isn't there! I've watched Bridgeport football for years, how is it that all of a sudden our football program isn't competing like they were?? We don't have the kids! You've got to have talent first. Nick Saban couldn't do any better than Henson.

Seriously! Why is comment 5:24 allowed?! Shameful!

9:39am doesn't actually go to Bridgeport events. Or he would know how wrong he is.

Go look at how any sport besides football is handled. Take track for example... or Soccer. Heck, go watch the middle school football programs; it will make you weep.

Past time, glad it's coming.

Mexicans just not football material.

@10:33 AM..... The Boys 8th grade team has won 1 football game in their entire football careers.. Good luck without Henson lol gonna be winning rings in no time

How's that basketball team doing without the colored folk anyway?

10:33
The Boys 8th grade team, as opposed to the Girls'? And isn't their 'entire' football career two years?

11:10. Didn't win any rings with Henson! All he did was take the best players put them on offense and make one way players out of them. Isn't ironic that Colin Jones makes the NFL on playing defense for TCU but never played full time defense at 3a Bridgeport. Henson has had plenty of talent but coaches like he has at 6a with one way players. He gets no credit for anything achieved in other sports hell he didn't know they existed!

All the Bridgeport coaches better get ready....new AD has some house cleaning to do!! I hope for the sake of the kids the new AD will bring in EXPERIENCED coaches. So tired of the 'friends & family' hiring of coaches at Bport

He is pompous, arrogant, full of himself & not a people person. He used those kids and when they couldn't perform anymore, tossed them to the side like garbage. Hope he never coaches again!

PLEASE remove the comment with the "n" word -- totally offensive and inappropriate - did you approve that??????

Henson and Obama gone in the same week! What a wonderful word!!!!!!

Plenty of misinformation here, other than the fact he is resigning. I am thankful that this is the way it came to an end. I played for Danny in the early years and while I didn't particularly care for him as a player, I learned as a young adult to respect what he had accomplished and the way it was done. Most of the things I didn't care for were none of my business as a teenager.

Now that my kids are in the program I have seen some gaping holes that he refused to address. There are bidding wars going on for kids to play individual sports and quit the others sports. Can't happen in a school this size. You need every athlete in every sport they have an interest in. The middle school program has been in very bad shape with poor coaching and effort.

I could go on but the facts were there for this to happen. Hopefully we will get some quality applicants, which I believe we will. I am a realist when it comes to the talent pool but there is definitely room to do more with what we have.

In an era of 4 teams making the playoffs, it's kind of hard NOT to make the playoffs! You really have to be a bad team to not go to the playoffs. Having said that, Henson won his 150th game this last year. 24 years...150 wins = 6 wins a year. Not very successful in my opinion. Most of his playoff teams were one & done also.
