I am sure these "middle class" trailer owners expected a windfall when the speedway news came. They were likely most upset to find they were only getting fair market value, not a handout as expected....and all they had to do to leave was start their engines, kinda ironic.

I worked for a government agency that acquired property by eminent domain. All acquisitions were for public purposes and not for private greed. It has been a long time but I seem to recall that the burden was on the government to prove a public need. I cannot understand how the right of eminent domain ever got used for ballparks and redneck car race tracks. I guess now they can take your property to construct a Dairy Queen.
Nobody cares until it is their land that is stolen. There were farmlands that had been owned by the same families for generations, as well as a double wide manufactured home subdivision that were taken from good people to build a track. Not a school, airport, rail yard, or any surface infrastructure that would benefit the nation as a whole, but a racetrack. It happened right here in the USA.
