Since We're Talking Schools

HOUSTON (AP) _ A Houston charter school has fired a science teacher after she was seen on videotape slapping and beating a 13-year-old male student. Principal David Jones of Jamie's House Charter School says he reviewed the camera phone video shot by another student. Jones says ``there is no excuse for a teacher to behave in this way with a child.'' A school spokeswoman identified the fired teacher as 40-year-old Sheri Lynn Davis, who had been with the charter school for three years. Further details about the teacher, who was fired last night, were not provided to The Associated Press. AP was unable to secure a phone listing for the teacher for comment. A school spokeswoman says the boy is still enrolled in the school and was attending classes today. KRIV-TV in Houston reports the video was shot in late April. His mother says the boy suffered a black eye and other bruises.
Good grief.

This does not look good and is obviously is not the right way to handle a situation....however I would like to know what lead to this....because that kid looks like trouble.

Haven't they outlawed black on black violence yet?

I don't understand people who would look at this video and find it funny. Would you stand for someone treating your child that way? I don't care if the kid was acting up, no teacher should react like that.

Who has said this was funny?

1) This teacher is in the wrong either way

2) I highly doubt this was a random act of violence like what normally happens to teachers. What was the trigger to set her off? Funny how there is absolutely zero mention of that in the entire story of what led up to that.

Again, she was wrong either way, but since when in the last 20 years have teachers had support instead of always being wrong?

Come on, she was teaching the kids about ultimate fighting in her PE class and was demonstrating some techniques and the kids set her up with this video. It's a complete set up, man.

Well If the teacher was white she would be in jail pending a large bond.

If my kid needs and deserves a ass-kickin' I owe her a tip or Chritmas bonus or something. If my kid didn't have this comin' I ought to get 20 minutes in a locked room with her. That system might oblige everyone to make better choices and take responsibility for their actions.

Just my take on sorry humans and their spawn.

And no, I don't think it's insignificant that this is a black community.

MzChief is right about the low quality of teachers. At least the teacher wasn't caught having sex with the kid.

Hasn't anyone ever heard of the board of Education?

They need to use it more often.

somehow I suspected the jr achiever in the video did something to deserve it. There was a point where parents expected teachers to "handle" their child if they acted up. The wussification of America continues thanks to the current generation of parents. Something happened between the World War II crowd and the Vietnam era folks. People my age never stood a chance.

Seriously, all you commenters here on Barry's blog should go spend a day in the classroom at your local high school, then go ride out with a police officer in your city or county, then come back and see if you have the same feelings toward the brave people that fill these positions. By the way, I don't condone what this teacher did, but must we start grouping all teachers in a negative light because of one? Where would we be without them?

Let's don't go crazy calling this woman a teacher. In Texas employees at charter schools do not have to be certified. I'm not certain they have to have anything more than a high school diploma. For all we know the three years she worked in this school are the sum total of her educational career. Charter schools are the gaping black hole in Texas education, which makes me wonder why the Republican party keeps pushing so hard to fund them with public education money.

I watched the video several times from different sites. Why are the other kids laughing? Why, other then the kid's body language did you see smiles on his face from time to time? Something else was going on here and I don't suspect it has something to do the teacher just wanting to kick the kid's ass.

I personally think it was a way to teach your kids how to treat each other when they fail to text and drive properly. The video would have been shown during drivers Education.

I had a hard time figuring out where said teacher was to begin with. The teacher just looks like another student. Pretty sure there are boxers hanging out from that studded belt.

No smartass 13 year old deserves anything like that!! Under any circumstances! Educators that can’t control the way they behave surely cannot control a class and don’t need to be teaching our children. I can't imagine how you people live with yourselves if you believe the appalling comments you post.

Thank god 8:21, I thought for a while I might be wrong after reading the other comments. You restore my faith in humanity...a little bit.

Sheri Lynn Davis had an outstanding warrant since March 2009, for slashing four tires, wow what a stellar teacher. I doubt if your tires were slashed that you would be defending her. That is over a year and the School did not know? Sure, what are they all idiots? Do they cover-up like the Catholic Church? Only time will tell. We all know that if the school had suspended her before this attack that we would not be here talking about this crazy woman.

I know the Police are investigating this and their job will be to defend the teacher and the school from lawsuits, so we all know how their report will read.

To all the teachers out there if you lose your temper and corner a child to beat them, drag them around on the floor and slam their their head into a wall then in my book its assault and battery and you should go to jail, case close.

If the teacher real did this because the student was making fun of someone or talking back, well that is a teaching moment that all students, if handled properly and like an adult, all the children could have benefit from.

I do not mind spanking from parents but I surely do not condone spanking from angry third parties, who already have violent tendencies and no teaching credentials.
