Let's Bring Down The Lights

The worst magazine in the world, The Texas Bar Journal, hit my desk today but it did have this interesting Letter to the Editor in it. I've often wondered the same thing. When Saddam Hussein was found not to possess WMDs (stay with me here), a backup argument for the invasion of Iraq was that he "gassed thousands of his own people - the Kurds." And although the analogy is weak, didn't the American government kill thousands of its own people in order to prevent an uprising? An uprising that wouldn't have led to the overthrow of the U.S., but simply to the creation of another peaceful country to its south? Edit: My view on life is basically this: If an alien walked into the room and I had to explain things "we believe" to him on a clean slate, would it necessarily make sense.

We all should know by now that our intelligence teams (and thousands upon thousands bodies in common graves) confirmed that were were WMDs and they were Hussein used some on his own people. Satelite images also confirm streams of trucks removing the WMDs to hiding places even out of the country prior to 9/11. To keep saying we found no WMDs is irrelevant. Had we not patronized liberals so long by wasting months upon months with the do nothing UN, you would have had more of your WMDs to look at. We did what was best, so quit crying about it. Worry more about President Goodwrench trying to run our industries.

I suggest we secede again...let's take Alaska with us, tho, cuz those folks up there are cool...they hate gun control (or any control), you can smoke funky tobaccy in your own house, and there's a bar on every corner instead of a fundamentalist church. What heaven on earth...so let's get a movement up to secede from the ole US of A and take AK along as our sister...Texas and Alaska...no body else.

The North won the war and now the Yankees are pretty much taking over the South. We now have Southerners marrying Northerners and they are having children together. In some houses people are eating oyster dressing on Thanksgiving instead of cornbread dressing. Here is the deal though Mr. John Cornelius of Jefferson, it won't do any good to hiss and moan about the dog gone Civil War. John the war is over, the North won and you just need to get over it and move on!

Yes Barry, your analogy holds. There are economists that believe we have always bought off an uprising with welfare. Unfortunately, I cannot disprove that belief.

Whenever "freedom" is a cause, you'll notice that in reality it's "freedom to be like me" that's the real cause. If the U.S. fought for a country to have "free" elections, and then that country overwhelmingly elected a tyrant, then the U.S. would keep hammering, even though "freedom" had been achieved.

And anyway even if they weren't there, it doesn't matter because Saddam was bad to his own people and we invaded for humanitarian reasons and everybody's purple fingers and blah blah blah.

No human brain that operates under such logic should even be able to function.

Anyway, nobody should forget that Southerners were practically itching for a war. They got it. And anyway how bad was the result? They still got to treat blacks like crap for a hundred years, and even now they suck up the tax money of northern and western states.

For such a poor leader, Lincoln got a car named after him, some toy logs named after him and a pretty decent statue in Washington D.C. I wonder what he would have gotten had he been a good leader?

I think this argument is based under the false premise that each state had the right to secede from the union.

I don't believe there is any evidence to support that claim.

Unifying the Nation was Lincoln's greatest accomplishment, and I salute him for it.

Whenever somebody uses the term "War of Northern Aggression" you know they're an idiot without going any further.

In my opinion Sherman didn't do enough. The south (notice it has a little "s") should have been completely depopulated (and not in a nice way) if we knew then what we know now.

The gassing of the Kurds was a small part of the three stated reasons for invading Iraq: 1) WMD; 2) Iraq's ties to terrorism; and 3) Hussein's criminal mistreatment of his own people. #1 & #2 were likely the most important, with #3 a fortunate by product.

If I'm understanding this correctly, BG is comparing Saddam Hussein to Abraham Lincoln. Interesting.

The South rose again and gave us W.

Apparently some of ya'll have a different Constitution than I do. Where does it say a state may secede any time it wishes? Our country is built on the strength of all our states and upon the rule of law. Lincoln had lots of problems during his term but he almost single-handedly held the country together. I’d suggest that was a pretty good demonstration of his leadership. Geeze, they even held an election in the middle of the war – which Lincoln won a second term. Babble on but Lincoln is generally regarded as either the best or second best (after Washington) president we’ve had.

Pretty weak attempt at inciting controversy. Lincoln was a failure at everything he attempted about 8 out of 10 times. He exemplifies perserverance overcoming ability. I guess there really is hope for your blog Barry.

After George Washington, Lincoln was the best president. Read your history, what the man went through was amazing. All he did was keep the nation together, free the slaves, and give his life for his country. That pretty impressive to me.

Clinton, Kennedy, Kerry and all the rest of the Democrats said that there were WMD. Clinton had access to every top secret during his presidency. I assume his statements about WMD carry more weight than Barry's denial of them.

In response to your Edit....

No, nothing you explained on your clean slate would make sense. Aliens don't speak English.

Duh!

OK Barry, are the following statements by key Democrats lies? Since you return to this subject, can you please explain what these people meant by these statements. What does "He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983" mean? Perhaps I don't understand the English language vey well and you will provide guidance. Or maybe just the two words "ten times" is something that I don't understand.

I guess Bill Clinton and his National Security Advisor had top secret clearances and knew what they were talking about.

"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983."
--Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998

"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs."
Letter to President Clinton, signed by:
-- Democratic Senators Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, and others, Oct. 9, 1998

"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process."
-Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998

"Without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation ... And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real..."
-- Sen. John F. Kerry (D, MA), Jan. 23. 2003

Reading the true history of the United States makes you realize almost all major decisions that formed this land were made by only a few wealthy citizens.

Revolutionary War: Wealthy landowners needed land the British deemed unusable to protect Indian lands.

Civil War: Davis wanted to severe ties with some Foreign and Domestic businesses the wealthy did not like this, which means war.

Mexican American War: We wanted the land and didn't want to pay for it.

You will never find the truth in the text books. You actually have to go back to the documents and independent journals of that time. We are already starting to see the Iraq war through rose colored glasses, even when everyone knows it was under false pretenses when we invaded the middle east.

The U.S. is all bent out of shape because North Korea has stated it will shoot down spy planes that fly over North Korea. Yet I wonder how the U.S. would feel if a North Korean plane was flying over Kansas taking pictures.

your right if you tried to explain your liberal beliefs to an alien, they would make no sense at all.

like taking from the producers and giving to the non producers in order to gain votes.

abortion

gay marriage

envionment worship

the enslavement of almost an entire race though the welfare state.

need i say more?

Wordkyle,

With your battle cry logic, we should also invade CUBA.

The proganda reason's for war on Irag have been argued and by the people's vote it is obvious nobody buys it anymore.

The real reason we invaded Irag was Commdodity based.
