These two items are pretty funny. (As I go through scrapbooks as described from the post below.)
The first is a photo which is the only proof I have that I once played football (and make no mistake about it, I was a tremendously average player. I probably gained one yard on that play).
The second is my first ever column as a sports writer for the school paper at Bridgeport High School in 1978. Sadly, it could be written today (but perhaps more artfully - and I have no idea why the apostrophe is after "Decatur".) But, man, did I have a head of hair at age 16. Click to enlarge.

Oh no, young Baron.
ah, glory days
good times, barron
So ... Did you inhale during the 1970's? It would be my guess with hair like that you were front row at the zz top concert rolling a fattie wondering what you were going to do with your life or maybe better yet were in the hell will I be in the year 2007.
Cuteness. =)
Barry, I remember you in those days.........(can't escape your past, my dear).....and you were and are a good writer - let's see: Jane Coggin, high school English in BHS?.....that explains much of your brilliance with the proper usage of the language. Did you ever pen anything in "Hoofprints"?
...keep that writing going and don't forget to remember your old friends in the credits when you pen your first book....
:-)
Just out of curiosity, exactly when did Bridgeport give up on the "Bullies" mascot and switch to the "Bulls"?
And wasn't that done in an attempt to change the BHS mindset that you were writing about in that high school paper article?
Seems like BHS has given up on the ridiculous "Lady Bulls" female mascot, and switched back to the "Sissies". I would suggest that the boys mascot be likewise switched back to the original. I always thought it was quite unique.
Billie Carroll and Harlan Bridwell were best friends in those days, why not more pictures???
A very well written article for a high-schooler! Good work--then and now--Barry!
Brings back old memories.
