That Was A Chunk Of Change Back Then (And Still Is)

As we approach the Blue Ray vs. HD-DVD battle (the format for high definition DVDs), us old-timers can recall the Betamax vs. VHS wars. I'm going to guess this ad was around 1986.

I remember when we rented these things from the video store. I think I was about twelve when we first rented one and the video "Ladies Night Out" which was male strippers dancing to Blondie's song "Call Me." Good times.

And that's way back when $300 or $400 was worth something! Inflation adjusted, that would be over $1,000 now! (don't they just give these things away now when you buy a TV or something?)

I bought a 1 hour Betamax in 1976 for $1295 + another $295 for the timer.

My dad won one of those at the annual Lion's Club carnival raffle back in 1983(ish) and we were the hit of the neighborhood.

Bought my first VCR in 1985 for $595 when my daughter was born since I knew going out to the movies was no longer an option. I went with the VHS. The thing still works and is sitting in my basement with my 8-track player.
