"In dramatic and sometimes agonizing terms, federal disaster officials warned President Bush and his homeland security chief before Hurricane Katrina struck that the storm could breach levees, put lives at risk in New Orleans' Superdome and overwhelm rescuers, according to confidential video footage.
"Bush didn't ask a single question during the final briefing before Katrina struck on Aug. 29, but he assured soon-to-be-battered state officials: 'We are fully prepared.'"
Another body blow to the GOP.
Edit: This is really odd. It's the lead story on the Dallas Morning News web site but it was not even mentioned on the NBC Today show.

This Will Be The Lead Story On Thursday

Look Its not the gov job! Its the local Gov they missed it!
lived there much of my life. Went through Camille, other storms. The people of New Orleans did not heed the warnings. Too many false alarms, and an entire generation had passed since Betsy, etc. They all had time to get to safety. Days. These storms enter the gulf every year, multiple times. Hindsight is so wonderful. Bush bashers I suppose would go ahead and evacuate California right now, and from now on issue mass evacuations and send in the entire army every time a hurricane get within a few days of American soil??? Come on, that's absurd. New Orleans is a lazy culture. And they got caught. There was NO excuse for anyone to get caught in their attics, etc. When you live there, you hear all the warnings, and you know what to do.
Barry, are you a democrat.....?
You do'nt like Bush. We get it!
Bush may be a doofus but I feel certain he would have sense enough to get out of the way of a hurricane. Did you ever give any thought to why the majority of the people who didn't get out of harm's way were people who have for decades and some people their entire lives have depended on other people/the government to take care of them?
I have lived in many countries and there is one thing that is for certain, if a person can't make it in the USA they might as well find a tall building and jump because they can't make it anywhere. If an able bodied person fails in the USA it is ONLY because they have yet to REALLY try like their life depends on it.
Piss and moan all you want about the USA and the dolts the citizens of the USA elect as their representatives but take a look at the line of people doing all they can to get IN to the USA verses the line of people leaving.
Incidentally, would someone please remind Barbra Streisand she promised to move from the USA if Bush was elected in 2000.
More hyperbolic rhetoric from the imploding left...
Come on Barry, a hurricane is an act of God.
Don't believe all you hear or read. Believe in actions.
Did the government do the best they could for this tragedy. No.
Did the people of New Orleans, the people that live there every day knowing the ramifications of where they live, do the best could during this tragedy. No.
I believe personal responsibility is much more important than waiting on/blaming someone else for your lot in life. Do something. Take action. Stand up for yourself.
Were there people who needed assistance? Yes. Were there a lot more people who could fend for themselves if they wanted to? Heck yes.
10:29 - you nailed it. How many times has the "the world is coming to an end" message been screamed across the media when it ended up being a non-event. All of this in the name of "better safe than sorry." Well, if "better safe than sorry", then all Wise Countians need to leave now since tornado season is coming. All Californians need to leave now since the "big one" is on it's way.
Give me a break.
N.O. citizens remind me of what a true Texan is: upon hearing a tornado warning, a true Texan runs outside to see if they can see it.
The weather service issued a warning that this was the big and to leave N.O. !!!!!!!!
But no we stay so we can blame the gov, and they can pay us lots of money, ck cards etc... motels etc...
Plus there was 100's of schools buses that just sat there!
Its not the gov's job to tell you when to get out of town!
The information that Bush received in that briefing was not any different than what any person who listened to the radio or watched the news on TV knew several days before Katrina hit. We all knew that, so what's the big news of Bush receiving it in a briefing.
Besides, if I remember correctly, Bush called the all-wise mayor a few days in advance recommending an all out evacuation and the mayor declined.
Like M&M said, this was all old news. What is wrong with the msm and the rest of the liberals with this stuff. Yes...they knew how bad it looked like it was going to be...Yes, they prepared for it and in some ways their preparation was insufficient...Then, the hurricane weakened and moved east...Then they all relaxed...Then, the levees broke and caught them sitting back and they had to play catch-up.
You can reel off all of the crap you want about the fed response being weak...but I was involved in the initial response and it was the best we had the capability of providing at the time. We were there with tons of equipment and manpower as set forth in the National Emergency Response Plan, but the LA State Emergency Response Plan failed to provide the leadership and guidance to get our resources into play.
I'll let you all in on another little secret...this country, nor any other, can prepare for an immediate mitigation of every possible disaster scenario. The logistics for such a capability exceed the current level of realistic capabilities, both strategically and economically.
Individual responsibility is the key...deal with it.
In my opinion, the sad thing about the whole Katrina disaster, is that Mississippi actually received the most direct hit from Katrina and had the most damage caused directly by the hurricane. Yet, New Orleans gets the most media attention because of the flooding and it all could have been avoided had LA not diverted federal funds intended to improve the levees for the building of casinos. It's a shame.
lets see on 9/11 New York was hit the mayor walked the streets and said we will rebuild this city! Told everyone to live their lives ride the subway they did, He the mayor didn't stand up and blame anyone, he siad lest's join in and rebuild!!
But the mayor in N.O. well he's well I better not say
