It may be the shortest story in the history of ever, but I see we made the Star Telegram this morning under this headline: "WISE COUNTY CONFEDERATE FLAG OK'D"

"Can we have do over? Like Republicans commissioners suggesting the historical flag be displayed at the Wise County Historical Museum???
Nope! We just told the metroplex who we are up here in Wise County. We will be the "red-neck" capitol of Texas come the first week of April.
And that is not to say anything bad about "red-necks". Personally, they treat their grandmas really good!
Remember the articles that go everyone stirred up in the Dallas magaine two years ago about Wise County being the meth lab capital of Texas..
Also, what County has more toxic injection wells in the State?
The County leaders talk a good story about growth toward a urban society, but actions speak louder than words!
So, come on in all you red-necks...come the first of April, the courthouse is going to have red-necks standing in line waiting to pay respect to the confederate flag! It should bring in all kinds of tourists that week.
I suppose we'll be seeing a mess of those "outside agitators" coming into town now trying to save us from ourselves. Mostly lawyers. The South is alive and well in Wise County and by God something's got to be done about it. Local FBI office maybe. People cannot be allowed to go around thinking for themselves -- what a mess we'd be in then.
Am I the only one who is upset about the inaccuracy of the story? It makes it look like that the commissioners were considering flying this flag. From what I read in the update, it made it look like any consideration of actually flying the flag was snuffed at the onset of the meeting. Yes, I do agree, though. You saw how much of a big deal was made over the confederate flag purses in Cleburne/Burleson? (I can't remember which). Now that the start telegram has this story, the news media will run with this one. . . and you'll see it first on five at four (in thirty seconds). It is sad that a flag can make people (primarily the news media) get all bent out of shape.
In answer to 8:57's post, what we are saying about ourselves is that in stead of being informed self thinkers we are sheep to be led by others who dictate what is "true" and what is "untrue". When this misinformation occurs in a totalitarian state, we call it propaganda. When misinformation is distributed by the opposing political party, it is called "spin" or "a liberal press". When misinformation is spread by our children, it is called lies. And those who dictate the postion or response to any question of a societies values or understanding were once called Fascist.
A Flag does not bother me. The ideal fostered after the Civil War, represented by that flag, does. I seem to remember a Confederate flag on the sidelines at every protest during the civil rights era to let the marchers know segregation was still the goal of the white south.A symbol of the Confederacy is an expression of intolerance, gone out of style.

Wizard, 8:57 replies regarding the headline in the Ft.Worth Telegram...yes, we need a do over on it? Why? The headline reads the conferate flag is o.k., then it goes into the historical part of the flag.
So, by putting ourselves in this position, we have allowed the media the opportunity to control the headlines, and it does not help our image one little bit. If the press considered it just a little display of a historical flag, why did it get attention outside the county???
What will the reader think? Probably will ask, Why? That is the question I'm asking.
Going back to the headlines; when one thinks of a flag, one usually thinks of the flag flying, not on display.
It is my hope that the crazies who do get bent out of shape over symbols, flags don't crawl from out from under the bushes on this one.
THE FLAG DOES NOT RESEMBLE RACISM. It was the battle flag of the confederate army for the rights of the states. not slavery. people get that mixed up real bad. its for one day for god sakes. just let'em do it. if that flag offends you, you need a history lesson. i mean, what if it offends me that people dont want it seen flying/displayed at the court house? nobody will care because it wont offend any black people or liberals. Forget our rights to hang a flag. it has the word confederate in it. that means that it is a racial matter. So go ahead and fly the mexican flag, and the republic of texas flag. It wont offend me any. besides the mexican flag is SEEN ALL OVER TEXAS!
Ok but you rebs still lossed. Get over it. Take down your stars and bars and burn it. Raise our countries flag higher, and learn to respect our nation as it is now.
excuse me? sure we lost but that doesnt mean we cant remember it. i couldnt have more respect for the American flag and our country right now. Do you remember the alamo? we lost in that battle but you still remember it dont you? what you need to get over is the fact that the confederate flag doesnt have anything to do with racism. It is the battle flag for the confederate army. That war made part of America what it is today. SO RESPECT IT!
Remember Bud Kennedy coming to Wise County a few years ago? Guess the ST gets bored occasionally and sends in one of their reporters when things aren't too stirred up in Fort Worth.
I've always wondered who keeps these guys informed of Wise County doings?
Why does an improper use of a flag (or any other symbol) by some misaligned group need to create a knee-jerk reaction to totally do away with the flag (or other symbol)? Why can I not have respect for my Confederate ancestors? It doesn't mean I don't respect the American flag I proudly fly today. Historians who truly respect the history of our country and want to use flags to remind us of history aren't out to reestablish slavery or anything else.
I'm from the north...Our High School Football team - well known as the Walpole Rebels...hung that flag proudly? for years at every football game, until the late 80's it was deemed politically inappropriate and they would put the Walpole Rebels to sleep~~forever~~
The swastika was widely used for hundreds of years, often as a symbol of good luck, before being coopted by the Nazis, but I doubt anyone would suggest we put one on the Courthouse. Sure, it's a matter of perception of what the symbol stands for, but it's just not worth the trouble when the particular symbol has so many ugly connotations, even when that's not what you meant.
Ahem...The "Confederate States" took up arms against the UNITED STATES Of AMERICA due to the fact the "Confederate States" were unhappy with how they were being treated by the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. When any person or groups of people take up arms against their own country most frequently they are thought to be traitors, especially if they lose the war. The Civil War was a conflict fought by brave men on both sides who must have believed they were doing "right" thing.
The Civil War ended in 1865 and the Confederate States LOST! Since when does the "losing side" get to fly their flag over the lands of the victors?
I have on many occasions visited Germany and have NEVER seen a Nazi flag displayed much less done so to honour the memory of the "brave" Nazi soldiers who died for their "noble" cause. Keep in mind the Nazi soldiers were doing the will of their nation and NOT fighting against their own country.
Especially during this current time of war, I believe it is an unconscionable lapse in judgment and monumentally disrespectful to our troops fighting for democracy for any county regardless of how backwater to honour anyone or group who has taken up arms against their own nation.
12:29 Speaking the truth regarding the flag; the general public does not distinquish between the battle flag and the national confederate flag.
The Sons of the Conferat Veterans will be using our public facility (the courthouse) to promote a LOST CAUSE!!
The all white male group will have a ceremony on April 1. What do we know about the group's activities? Do they dress up in uniform? Are their meetings open to the public?
Good points anon 7:27 - Chase is heavily identified with the veterans group. Remember him driving his white truck in the first ever Veterans parade WITH HIS POLITICAL ADVERTISING ON HIS TRUCK? Many wanted to throw up over that one. Dumb!
Yep, I think this flag flap is very timely.....politically.
If we elect this guy again, we can just put up with more stupidity.
8:40 If it is political, and the ceremony, flag and words on secession draw negative attention to our county, it may backfire in the November election for the two Republican commissioners.
The all white male group is an exclusive organization.
It does seem funny that the man from Bowie went alone. If the local group are so proud of their ancestors, why did they not go along to give support.
Why don't they print out a list of the members, where they meet and what is their mission statement.
If they want to use public facilities, they should be open with the public.
Why be ashamed? Why not let the public know who they are?

We live in a crazy world!

Anon 11:55 hit the nail on the head. I couldn't have said it better myself.

Gofish apparently thinks I'm gone. (He'll now come back on later as "therealgofish" and whine some more)

What is VERY INTERESTING is to see how the Commissioners Voted ...
Richardson the Red Neck was the First & Only Yes Vote ...
MMMMM .... I now see the True Colors ....
And people have the nerve to ask me why I moved away from Wise County.

Why this action before the Primary?
Will Chase benefit from the controversy???

Guess we will know the day of the ceremony.
The mistake was made when Dick (Yankee)Chase allowed Clyde McMurray to even bring up the flag issue in court. It's all in the way things are handled.
And this was botched.
Badly botched.
