We'll Get Right On That, Sir

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Vice President Dick Cheney urged Americans Thursday to do a better job of saving . . . . "The American dream begins with saving money and that should begin on the very first day of work," Cheney told a conference here exploring how to encourage people to boost savings and be better prepared for retirement. That's pretty easy to say for a guy whose net worth (two years ago) was estimated to be at least $50 million.

Just fanfreakingtastic! It is always so special when some stinking rich elected official takes it upon them self to tell Americans that everyone needs to save more money.

Here is the real irony and truth as to why Americans do not acquire personal wealth. Both of my parents each worked 40 plus years and combined with their employer's contributions put into social security more than $280,000. After working for more than 40 years at their respective careers they had saved more than $1,000.000....Yep that's a MILLION DOLLARS! (amazing how much 2 people each responsible for an annual average contribution of $3,600. to an account earning 5.5% for 40 years can add up) Both of my parents passed prior to reaching 65 thus never drew a dime from their SS account nor was there any way for their "SAVINGS" to be passed on to their family because it was being held in the socialistic fund known as Social Security.

Social Security prevents individuals from acquiring PERSONAL wealth and being responsible for their own lives when they are mature adults. Why is it that the US government feels it is their responsibility/right to take money from hard working individuals and decide how much will be doled out to the masses? Why is it that the US government has determined that Americans are incapable of taking care of themselves? We ALL know how pathetically inept ALL branches of the government are when it comes to taking care of the needs of individual citizens.

If you want to figure out how much you are dumping into Social Security and how much you would have saved had the contributions been put into a personal account go to this web site:

Someone needs to tell Mr. Cheney, Americans save MILLIONS of dollars it is just that the government takes it and doles it out to MILLIONS of people who have NEVER worked a day in their lives thus NEVER made a contribution to Social Security.

Having great wealth can really put some folks out of touch with the reality that many are just barely existing.

This country is in the shape it is in because of greed.

Our greed.

God bless America?

Is there anything incorrect about what he said?
Is it hard to save? Yes. Is it because the satellite and cell phone and all the "neccesities of life"? Usually.
Do you think the people who just opened the new donut store are blowing all their cash? I doubt it. Do you think all the Hispanics (whether here legally or illegally) who are sending money back home are blowing all they have? I doubt it.
It's possible to save if you really want to. You may not be a billionaire but you can save.
Is out system perfect? NO. But that doesn't mean you can't save.

Hey 9:51:

NO ONE draws SS without paying in. It is called the quarter system; you have to work and pay in so many quarters or you get nothing! Please quit being an uniformed butthead and spewing misinformation based upon what some politican said on TV. If you want to gripe about the gover't, then gripe abput this: my wife is a school teacher who does not pay SS (pays into an alternative gov't. operated fund, Teacher Retirement). If die, and she retires from an ISD that does not pay SS (most all of them), she will NOT receive the full survivor benefits that anyone else would from my SS. It is called Alternative Pension Offset, a bill passed by congress. In other words, because she is a teacher w/ alternative retirement, she is penalized, even though I have paid SS for 37+ years. There is something for you to gripe about!

Because of teachers giving of themselves for such little pay, naturally they would be the ones discriminated against. It is even worse than that. Teachers who work an extra job and do pay into SS, will receive a reduced SS payment upon retirement. Why? Because they taught and have Texas Retirement System (which isn't much anyway). They are the only working group discriminated against. Amazing.

Wizard?...Wizard of WHAT??...There are children who are born with disabilities who receive Social Security benefits from the time of birth until the month they die. Widows who NEVER worked a day in their life and have children under 16 receive social security benefits until their children reach the age of 16. CHILDREN below the age of 18 who have NEVER worked a day in their life receive social security benefits if a parent dies. Widows who are 65+ and have never worked a day in their life receive SS AFTER their spouse who worked passes. MY widowed mother-in-law receives $1,138.00 per month and has NEVER had a job other than being a wife and stay at home mother. (Don't worry about her my father-in-law left her with a trust that assures her income keeps her in the top 5% in the US) The SOCIAL SECURITY and Medicare benefits she receives are based upon those of her deceased husband. If you doubt what I'm telling you go and take a look at http://www.ssa.gov/ww&os2.htm
read the list immediately below
Social Security survivors benefits can be paid to:

The next time you decide pull BS out of your ahhhhhhh....HAT...(yeah that's the 3 letter word I was looking for) you might want to check out a few FACTS!
Some people actually KNOW what they're talking about before they type anything they know will be read.
