Stars And Bars

You know, the best part of the Messenger is buried in the "Inside Wise" section of the Editorial/Letter to the Editors pages. I learned from this weekend's issue that the County Commissioners will hear from some guy from Bowie on Monday who "wants to commissioners' approval to fly the 'national' flag (as opposed to the battle flag) of the Confederate States of America on the courthouse flagpole." Delicious. (Various flags of the Confederacy are here)

Gee, I'll bet that'll go over big in Bowie. Why don't they put it to a vote and then the guy can issue a lawsuit. Isn't that how it works?

"Inside Wise" may be the best the Messenger has--but if that's so--the Messenger must really stink. "Inside Wise" seems to be a poor imitation of your "The Spin" and "The Blog", and often gets mean spirited. And at least you admit to writing it--instead of cowardly hiding behind a laundry list of 5 or 6 names who "might have" written a comment.

Why is some lunatic from Bowie coming to Wise County to see if we will fly that flag? He is a nut case pure and simple. What is the point? I am more than happy to allow him to get his kicks from belonging to the Sons of the Confederacy or whatever, but I OBJECT to him coming over here and asking us to fly the Confederate flag. The Confederate War is OVER, get over it. He looks like a moron.

He is a member of the A.S. Johnson camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterns, located in Decatur. This group has many prominent local citizens as members. Membership requires having had ancestors who fought in the War of Northern Aggression (i.e. the Civil War), for either side. It is no less a historical group than the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). It is to honor those who fought and died in the greatest and most tradgic conflict ever faced by this nation. I don't know the guy personally, but after having had a month of "Black History" involuntarily shoved down my throat, what's wrong with honoring and remembering those who fought for "their country". You may not like the history of the US and Conferderacy and to admit that our ancestors were involved may be politically incorrect, but denying it ever took place and turning our backs on it is just plain wrong and moronic.

Wizard...there's a great little book I want you to pick up-http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0895260476/sr=8-2/qid=1141056919/ref=pd_bbs_2/104-3439863-7171934?%5Fencoding=UTF8

UNtwisted history leaves the Confederacy in a better light. Regardless, I agree...they're even having "spotlight" moments for Black History Month at my church...don't think we've EVER discussed or had appreciative bits done on John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Robert E. Lee....etc., etc.!

I just refuse to feel guilty about being white. And, a Southern White, at that...

Lets fly the French Flag and the Mexican Flag as well. There were also part of our heritage.

Some do fly those flags on certain days....the French celebrate Bastille Day, and the schools and many social organizations celebrate the Mexican Cinco de Mayo. But neither of those groups ever declared Texas as part of a new country.

So I guess if the freaking Republic of Texas Guys put a new flag together, that is the criteria for being able to fly your flag at the courthouse. IT is important to remember and honor out history, but flying flags above the Courthouse or Statehouse or Nations Capitol maybe different.

This flag is just about a period in our nations history. Was is a pretty time? no, but you can not only remember the good parts of the story.

An once again people the Civil War was about STATE'S RIGHTS not slavery... although most people equal the Confederate flag with slavery.

I really see no difference in flying that one and the Lone Star flag. It too represents a part of our history and you don't see people having a cow about that.

Thank you miz.gina. The constitutional question posed had to do with the right of succession. Lincoln wisely used slavery for war stimulation politically. It would be proper to remember all of our history. Fly the flag!!

Southern, White and PROUD OF IT!

Google search on the Sons of Confederacy links to some really far, far right wing groups.

The Civil War was fought over state's rights and local control.

Placing a group, that would advocate a return to the time that divided and weakened our nation, on the county commissioners court agenda is an insult to any progressive, civil rights citizen of Wise County.

The decisiion shows extremely poor judgement by County Judge Chase. The commissioners court time should be spent on trying to find the resources to fund the hiring of 5 jailers for the half empty jail!

The only way an item can be placed on the Commissioners Court Agenda is ONLY by approval of the County Judge.
Judge Chase used very bad logic by allowing this to even be considered. Especially at election time.
This is not a county business issue in any way ...shape...or form.
Whether one agrees or disagrees about the who's or why's of the Civil War, the issue of a Confederate Flag, irregardless of which flag it is does not need to be brought up as County business.
Commissioners need to be concentrating on Wise County issues.....budget...roads....jailers....etc...etc...etc
The gentleman needs to go back up to Montague County and fly the flag on the Montague County Court House.
This will no doubt cause some negative publicity for Wise County at a time when we are trying to stimulate growth.
So sad.

From a purely aesthetic standpoint, which do you think is the better looking flag?

(If you forgot what the battle flag looks like, it's here: http://www.capitolflags.com/historic-flags.html)

Of course, I guess at this point it's impossible to see any of those Confederate flags as just a design, and not think of all the history that goes along with the flag.

I know -- I'm weird. But sometimes I just like to scrutinize flags for their design. A flag has such a limited amount of space to encapsulate a nation -- symbolize pictorially who they are. Obviously practically impossible, but still interesting to see the different flags that attempt to do so.

Personally, I think those revolutionary war flags are pretty sweet. They seemed to have a lot more creativity -- coiled rattlesnakes (the three different "Don't Tread on me" flags for example), trees, etc.
