Random Thursday Morning Thoughts

  • The WBAP crew was shocking as they discussed gays in the Boy Scouts shortly before 7:00 a.m. this morning: "Scout leaders would lead meetings wearing pink" and "It'd be hard to earn that Interior Design badge" to name a few. And they weren't laughing.
  • The jury in the Wise County criminal negligence trial deliberated all day yesterday and went home without reaching a verdict. Based on the jury notes I saw, I think they know what they want to do but are having logistical trouble. I'll explain after the verdict.
  • The Ticket has made a drop out of the goat scream from the Super Bowl Doritos commercial, and I laugh every time.
  • The fact that the post office delivers mail to the door of every home in America is really mind-boggling.
  • I turned over to see the final few minutes of TCU's upset of #5 Kansas last night after I learned the score had been 22-13 at halftime. (But, man, there were a lot of Kansas fans at that Fort Worth game.)
  • From today's Update: "REMEMBER NOT TO FORGET — The North Central Texas chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association meets 10 a.m.-noon today at the Decatur Civic Center."
  • The crazy Westboro Baptist Church might picket Chris Kyle's memorial service at Cowboys Stadium.  I think we might actually see violence if that happens.
  • The Family Pup had her boyfriend over yesterday. Mrs. LL sent a pic.
  • A former Los Angeles police officer is on a killing spree in that city.
  • I've heard more than one person say that the CSCOPE curriculum in school involves "Muslim indoctrination."   Mainly from Tea Partiers.

RTG's - Absolutely no complaint. I like the age range as well. The best you have done in months.

If you would bother to check out Michelle Malkin's investigative reporting on CSCOPE, you will see that it not only involves Muslim indoctrination but a lot of other things that should scare the crap out of you and make you realize the plan that this administration has for our country.

Does CSCOPE Promote Islam?
Absolutely not. This misunderstanding is based on lesson content that has been taken completely out of context. CSCOPE teaches the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) which are adopted by the 15 members of the SBOE. A number of the TEKS call for students to learn about and compare the various world religions. One of the religions addressed is Islam and there is a lesson on the founding principles and history of the religion; just as there are for Christianity, Judaism, and other major world religions. One part of the lesson on the basic tenants of Islam has been presented as what students are to learn about all religions, when in fact it simply describes what Muslims believe and what Islam teaches.
What about the accusations that CSCOPE believes the Boston Tea Party patriots were terrorists?
Again, absolutely not. The original lesson that is being misinterpreted was about terrorism and how perspective can shape one’s views of an act, in this case how King George III and others from Great Britain might have viewed activities like dumping tea into Boston Harbor. The Boston Tea Party, though not named, was described and students were asked to respond on how they view what happened. The goal of the lesson was to take an incident well known by students and that was universally viewed as a patriotic event in American history and challenge students to hear about it from a differing perspective. In hindsight, the TESCCC acknowledges a different example would have been a better choice and would not have risked the misunderstanding about its intent. Rest assured that even in the original version students were certainly not taught that the Boston Tea Party was an act of terrorism.
One of CSCOPE’s commitments is to listen to our users and to be responsive to their needs. It is worth noting; neither the lesson on Islam, nor the terrorism lesson ever received any feedback or complaints from CSCOPE users. However, both lessons were no longer aligned with state standards, so they were removed in a timely fashion. They initially continued to be posted as a resource, as were all former social studies lessons, at the request of school districts. Again, we take pride in being responsive to the districts that we serve. (To view both the Islam and Terrorism lesson in their original form, please visit www.cscope.us)

8:48, I did bother to look at Michelle Malkin's "investigative reporting on CSCOPE".

What I found was not investigative or reporting, but nonsense. 9:04 explained it well.

You really think that learning about Islam or Socialism is equal to "indoctrination"?

If we do not teach children the differences between those beliefs (and other beliefs existing in our world) and the ones that they hold, our children will be destined to be as foolish as you.

Having our teachers simply be cheerleaders for a certain set of beliefs or values, without any critical analysis, would be indoctrination.

SpanishWarDonkey said...

I don't understand all the fuss about the new cScope stuff. As parents, you have a responsibility to teach your children too. I figured out, on my own, that I'm going to be taught a lot of things in school and life that I might not believe or support. I just accepted it as something I could not change and went along with it, made the good grades I needed to, and moved on. Critical thinking is something I see is very lacking in kids today. Schools might try to teach critical thinking, but what you teach your kids as parents goes a lot further, I promise. I'm not to terribly far removed from grade school and remember these thoughts well. Good grades start at home.

In Texas government indoctrination of children is controlled by Republicans. Would you want George W. Bush or Sarah Palin teaching your children?

When a person complains because students in a World History class are taught the tenets of the major world religions, it makes me wonder what he/she is afraid of. If the person is a religious person, it seems to indicate a lack of faith in his/her own religion....

We like to think of our country as one that values knowledge and critical thinking skills..... don't we?

Or maybe some fear that dang ole Tree of Knowledge is poisoning our students. Down with knowledge!! Death to critical thinking!! ;)

What I don't get about the Boy Scouts not allowing gays in, is the fact that it is such a gay organization to begin with. I refused to be involved as a kid because I didn't want to be seen in the little starched up, brown, shorty short outfit. Tell me a gay man didn't design that thing.

I got an organization for you to allow your boy to be a part of, it is called his family. My father and mother taught me 90% of the stuff that they teach in the scouts without surrendering my dignity. I also didn't have to go stay on a camping trip with some strange man who fancies wearing a silly uniform for no apparent reason.

The Organization should pack it in (no pun intended) and just cease to exist before making an open invitation to homosexuals. Scouting is a unique experience that would be changed and not for the better by making sexual orientation a part of the campout experience. if you're a parent, gay or otherwise, and you want your gay kid to mingle with other gay kids on campouts, go start your own organization.

One of the problems in making a judgment about the CSCOPE business is the difficulty in seeing what's actually being taught. 904 presents a very reasonable portrayal of the lessons, but the link given is to the CSCOPE main site, which gives a link to a similar "very reasonable explanation" of what's being taught -- but there's no way to see what's actually being taught.

The one website I found that discussed the matter cited specific lessons which seem damning, which they claim had more or less been smuggled out. According to that same website, the curriculum is denied to parents and teachers are under a legal "gag order" not to discuss CSCOPE.

Why is the actual curriculum not available to anyone who wants it? How are we supposed to make an informed judgment of the controversy if that information is not available?

I have the same thoughts on the Westboro Baptist Church as you do. When I heard the memorial was being held at Jerry World, I thought to myself, if those folks show up around the death star with their normal babble, there is a better than fair chance one or more persons attending the service will take personal exception and take what they feel is appropriate action.

If I was a member of the Arlington PD, I'd be pretty concerned about that.

CSCOPE is a curriculum produced by private, for profit company. They do not allow it to be publicly available because people could copy and use parts of it without paying for it.
Education curriculum writing and testing is big business. And those companies want to foment the "educational crisis" screaming as much as possible. It's a perpetual crisis that rakes in the bucks...

Anonymous said...

WordKyle- This was sent to teachers from CSCOPE. I hope this answers your questions!

Is it acceptable for teachers and educators to discuss CSCOPE material?

Of course. The idea that teachers are prohibited from discussing CSCOPE content is another misconception. Teachers benefit from collaboration and it is important that they are allowed to discuss CSCOPE content with their peers in an effort to improve the education of all students. As was stated above, CSCOPE was designed with the teacher in mind and teachers are encouraged to work with their peers to improve the content or to add their own lessons and self-created content. We are also communicating with our colleagues in the schools to reassure them that there is nothing prohibiting them from discussing CSCOPE content or lessons with others.

Why can’t CSCOPE make all lessons available to the general public?

There are several reasons. We believe that this would actually undercut a teacher’s ability to customize a lesson to best serve the students in their classroom. The teacher should always be a parent’s primary contact in discovering what resources are being used in the learning environment. Ultimately, the teacher and district decides if a CSCOPE lesson will be used in full, in part or not at all. This decision is based on the best interest of their students and the teacher must be allowed to use their skills and judgment to determine how to best educate their students. The TESCCC does not wish to do anything that could generate confusion among parents and teachers. The TESCCC strongly believes and supports local decision making within school districts and insist that the member districts have the ability to release any CSCOPE content themselves, since it will more accurately reflect the instruction going on in that specific community. However, as noted above, we are redesigning the Parent Resource Site, and pledge to read each comment from parents and to reassess and report to the public in six months.

On the one hand we have very specific passages from the material which support their argument, and on the other side all we have are claims of good will and good intentions. You can see why there might be questions.

1:27 - It becomes public record to an extent but it doesn't necessarily mean that products are then free. For instance, if books are in a school library, does that mean that anyone can come use them and check them out? Certainly anyone should be able to come in and has the right to know what books are in there and what the content is, but it doesn't mean that anyone off the street should be able to walk in and check out a book. Those books are for students, purchased for students, by publishing companies that sell to schools at discounts not meant for the general public. Same thing with curriculum. CSCOPE isn't the only thing out there I am sure, but you could imagine that a school purchases it, and the publisher builds it, for the intent of use by a teacher and school. It doesn't mean that anyone off the street can just use it without purchasing it. You can argue that you as a taxpayer have paid for it. Of course you have! And you have every right to go in, just like the books in the library, and find out what is in it. But I don't think just giving everyone free access to it is appropriate, especially if there are lessons, tests, and other materials that teachers are using strategically with their students.

United Way's Website, under FAQ says that it has no noational or international position on BSA other than to permit local United Way Chapters to make the call on whether to support BSA. "Our intent, as far as theories with the [curriculum standards], was to teach all sides of scientific explanations… But when I went on [to the CSCOPE website] last night, I couldn’t find anything that might be seen as another side to the theory of evolution. Every link, every lesson, everything, you know, was taught as “this is how the origin of life happened, this is what the fossil record proves,” and all that’s fine, but that’s only one side."

So, if you want to teach Non-Science in Science class, she's your girl.

329 - Your point makes sense, but it doesn't address my point. There may be valid reasons CSCOPE does not make every word of the course material available to the public, and that fact makes it impossible to refute claims that ostensibly quote the material. Given this situation, we are asked simply to trust those who say CSCOPE doesn't do the terrible things that are being claimed, but without any power to verify what they say. Meanwhile, the other side is putting out very precise information -- which we have no way of judging as valid because we can't see the source material for ourselves.

If you are in DISD you may ask your kids teacher specific questions or view any part of CSCOPE by simply asking an Administrator. They will let you look at it on a school computer. This was stated at the Town Hall Meeting last year.

Since CSCOPE is copyrighted they can't send it home with the parents or make the site available to the general public - however it is in no way secret. I have been happy with the answers to my questions.

I have three children in DISD at three different campuses. It is my experience that their teachers are strong Christians (or follow the Judeo / Christian values I hold dear.) Most of the Administrators and Board members I have met are the same. If the curriculum were so horrid as to teach pro terrorism, pro Muslim, anti Christian lessons I would think that they would speak up and put an end to that lesson. Instead they have continued to teach my children in the manner a good teacher would teach.

Anyone can fear monger about any topic. CSCOPE happens to be a hot button topic around here - for a small group. Most people are happy with their children's education.

Anonymous said...

Wordkyle - I see your point, but I think CSCOPE would be more compared to a dictionary for your example. Which exact word definition are you wanting? A dictionary is a 1,000 page book with tiny writing. In all it's vast material, what part do you want to verify? Are you asking for all the words in the letter P section, or just the words from Psy to Pu? or are you just look to see if the definition of putty is how you would define it?

I'm not comparing CSCOPE to a dictionary as a valid source of reference, I'm trying to make the comparison of size and vastness of material. It is hard to show specific examples of validity without specific examples of concern.

I don't think the general public understands the depth and complexity of what a teacher is expected to teach now. The sheer quantity and complexity of concepts that the State Board and the Legislature has put on Texas schools is mind blowing.

wordkyle said...

646 - The one site I've been referring to, txcscopereview.com, is pretty specific in its criticisms. To use your example, it would be as though they were claiming "The first three definitions under the letter P are wrong." To refute this, the dictionary publisher could cite what the definitions are, and why they were used.

I'm not at the point where I'm saying CSCOPE is guilty of all it's accused of. I'm merely saying that the specific arguments are being made by critics, and the CSCOPE response seems to consist of "trust us," when their trustworthiness is the matter under discussion.

Wordkyle - 9:04 am has this on two of the examples I think you are talking about: One of CSCOPE’s commitments is to listen to our users and to be responsive to their needs.

In discussing CSCOPE's curriculum, has anyone considered the actual scope and sequence?

I have been told by numerous teachers that it is NOT in any logical order whatsoever, that it teaches concepts out of order, that it teaches them in a different order than the STAAR test tests them.

These are measurable things.

And, FYI regarding the secrecy of the CSCOPE curriculum-- if it were a copyrighted textbook, we'd all have access to it, wouldn't we? Our kids would be bringing them home each night, wouldn't they.

This brings up another point. Textbooks. When they moved into the new high school without lockers, parents were told that the teachers would have classroom sets of books, so students wouldn't have to lug heavy books and bags around every day, and the student could leave his huge literature or history or science book at home for use on homework.

THIS PROMISE HAS NEVER BEEN FULFILLED. My child's backpack weighs almost 1/3 of my child's weight.

And, yes, my child could use a rolling backpack (and get made fun of) but even the rolling backpacks won't hold all the AP books he needs.

Is there a doctor out there who can agree that this is a HUGE problem?

It's been 6 or 7 years, when is DISD going to make good on this promise? it's about time.

United way is not a chairty at all. It's a business that blows eighty per cent on "management" Less than fifteen percent goes th the needy. Management in their dictionary must mean jet planes huge salarys, mansions, whores, ect.People who give to U W would be better off to blow it on dope.At least they would have an excuse to be stupid.

I'm just surprised that all you taxpayers on here don't have any problem with paying for something twice! Do you remember the old response of "sorry, I already gave at the office?"
Yeah, with C-scope you're not only giving at the office, but you're going to give again from home!
Do you know who pays for the textbooks that the state adopts and then sends to all public schools? You know, those books are very expensive! Do you know who pays for them? YOU DO! Taxpayer money is used to purchase those books and many of the workbooks your kids use come along with that purchase. Yes, your tax dollars at work to send well written curriculum that these textbook companies have put together that collaborates with what the state tests cover! These textbooks even mark each TEK that is taught in the book so that the teachers do know that they are covering the entire scope for their grade level. That's been occurring for years and years.

Then other companies decide they can rip more money from you, the taxpayer, by writing new workbooks filled with worksheets that "they" claim also cover the tested TEKS! But the companies then put that real sales pitch out there for the "suckers" that can't seem to think for themselves and SELL the claim that if the schools buy and use their curriculum (C-scope and others) then all students will pass those ugly state tests!

So, the school administrators (suckers who have no faith in their teachers' abilities) pitch to the school board that "WE MUST HAVE THIS CURRICULUM SO OUR STUDENTS WILL PASS THE TESTS AND OUR SCHOOL WILL BE RATED EXEMPLARY!" The school board (more suckers) swallows that explanation and says to get that curriculum and make sure our teachers follow it (because everyone knows school boards don't believe in professional teachers' abilities either).

So, the textbooks the state adopted, purchased and sent to the public schools with YOUR tax dollars (your giving at the office) have now been declared unworthy by the local admin and boards, so your local school district takes from its budget many thousands and thousands of dollars to buy the "miracle curriculum" they are suckers for and guess where that money came from? Yep, YOUR SCHOOL TAXES! (giving from home)

I'm sorry if I haven't painted the picture clear enough for you here. If I could draw the picture for you, I guess I draw you, the taxpayer, standing there with the state pulling money from your right pocket for the state adopted texts, and then the local school district pulling money from your left pocket for the C-scope "snake oil" packets!

Yes, people you are paying twice and there is absolutely no need to do that! Have some faith in your teachers and let them do the job they are so good at. Handing them a "snake oil" script only makes you, the taxpayers, the fools!

Wise up!

Who do people think wrote and created Cscope? It was created by TEXAS ESCs. Where do employees from TEXAS ESCs come from? They come from TEXAS school districts. They hire the best and brightest teachers from local school districts to deliver teacher workshops on a variety of topics. In this case, they hired TEXAS teachers to write curriculum and lessons aligned to what the fine STATE OF TEXAS says we must teach ALL TEXAS CHILDREN. Where do TEXAS school districts get most of their teachers? Most Texas teachers were born and raised in TEXAS - the overwhelmingly Republican State! Do people REALLY believe TEXAS teachers wrote curriculum that does any of these absurd claims about indoctrinating students into the world of Islamic beliefs or trying to convince our children that we were wrong when it comes to the Boston Tea Party?

Why do the Boy Scouts also discriminate against girls? Surely the same groups pushing for change would be in favor of little boys and little girls camping together, showering together...all that. If not, why not?

I know that real editors and authors claim ownership with their name printed at the beginning of their work/books. Tell us who the authors of CSCOPE are. Give us a list of names so we DO feel like CSCOPE isn't hiding a list of inept, underqualified wack jobs or worse, we find out that ESC people really are coming up with this crap.
This whole argument is stupid. CSCOPE is crap...academically and context-wise.
ESC people are freaking out over this because CSCOPE affects 3.5 million kids in the state of Texas. Do the math at 9 bucks a head per year. Once CSCOPE gets shit canned, so will all the desk jobs at the ESC farmlands.
