The story says they've been screened as "moral/ethical". There doesn't seem to be any payoff for moral/ethical behavior if JC isn't making two trips. And by then, they already know their fate aint looking too rosy, because their belief system just got disproved!

It has become, painfully, clear that the people of the U.S. have the government they deserve.
