Random Tuesday Morning Thoughts

  • A lot of your web browsers, mine included, received a warning yesterday that the Messenger's web site was an "attack site." I bet that caused some scrambling over there.
  • Edit: It's still going on, and an emailer just directed me to this explanation as to what's going on over there. Eeek.
  • A friend told me about Comedy Central's Tosh.0 about six months ago. I finally gave it a chance about three weeks ago and it's really funny.
  • I'm getting new tires this morning. That is, if I don't die first.
  • The women of UConn have now won a record 71 straight basketball games. I didn't think streaks like that were possible anymore.
  • Hal Jay on WBAP this morning when the discussion arose about whether cell phones can cause brain tumors: "I guess that really needs to be proven first." Really?
  • Wow. Got the scam email this morning from a friend saying she is stuck in London without cash. The friend is authentic. The email is not.
  • Weird political revelation yesterday: It doesn't matter if a Congressman has to resign in disgrace because of an ethics investigation involving allegations of gay sexual harassment, if you are willing to bad mouth the Obama Administration, Fox News will embrace you.
  • That girl from Precious is a big gal. And I bet we never hear from her again.
  • Start noticing the number of power lines in Decatur. You'll be amazed.
  • Bristol Palin gets $1,750 a month in child support?
  • Simon Cowell's girlfriend is hawt, but I suppose it wouldn't be any other way.
  • "The officer seen the suspect with a gun . . . ." - Official police spokesman for Dallas PD in connection with the shooting in an office tower yesterday
  • A Gossip Girl "Hey, Now"?
  • Game Change is a great book.

Barry:

You have to admit that what Massa did was a lot less worse than what Charlie Rangel and others have done. His biggest crime was that he dared to question Obama and his policies.

I have no trouble believing that Rahm Emanuel has gone after him like he claims. There have been many stories about the attacks that Emanuel has done. It is just Chicago politics at its best (or worst).

The malware at WCM's site comes from the ad networks. There are so many multi-level deals going on with ad networks that the ad service itself doesn't host the content. Lots of sites get hit, they serve up ads from a network they participate in, and some third-party injects malware. Usually in PDFs. Adobe sucks, kids. And use an ad blocker.

Another great book (half way through) is "Twelve Mighty Orphans" by Jim Dent (the Texas writer who did some hard time for DWI.....BG might know more details). I'm REALLY fascinated with this story as this team was made up of orphans from the FT Worth Masonic home and how they dominated Texas HS football in the late 30's and early 40's going against state powerhouse teams 10 times their size and how the TIL (now UIL) made their life miserable. Does anyone know if the campus buildings still exist? I get the impression it's somewhere just south of Texas Weslyan.

Hmmm...does anyone remember if, over the last decade, any guests on the news networks bad-mouthed the Bush administration? Fox's choice to have an Obama critic on strikes our host as an anomaly. (And really, counselor...how does this "ethics investigation" compare to other Democrat scandals?) How about Obama's timing on judicial appointments? I realize that politics is the art of buying votes, but isn't this pretty heavy-handed and obvious? It's as if they don't even care if the public knows.

M-M said...

Well, the booster boys of Decatur are at it again. They have their hand picked candidates lined up to try and out Jerry Howard and Ruby Quanz. They are Gary Clayton and Jeff Elder. Folks of Decatur ISD, we need to make sure Gary and Jeff are soundly defeated in the election for school board.

The booster boys are attempting to monopolize the board for selfish reasons of getting the turf and other athletic reasons, like an indoor practice facility. What part of 'No' do they not understand? The board told them no. And, after spending a ton of money and time and effort, the voters resoundingly told them no in the last bond election.

Why don't they try and recruit a new head coach. Coach Story is not creative at all. I don't think he has introduced a new offensive play in 10 years. An opponent could study a game film from 8 years ago and be prepared for a game this fall.

Come on booster boys(Parker, Jackson, Elder, etc), your motivations are purely selfish and unneeded. Give it up.

Anonymous said...

M-M, I'd be willing to bet that these "booster Boys" have given more of their personal time to the schools than you've dreamed of. Why don't you start attending board meetings with them instead of running your mouth about it!

Anonymous said...

Barry you should post the bit from tosh-o where he catches up with that sorority girl fire extinguisher gone ary bit that you posted some months back... pretty funny!!

Anonymous said...

Tried to print today's Update - no instructions anywhere. I knew something was wrong.

Hope they get their problems solved.

Anonymous said...

Wordkyle - politics being "the buying of votes" is right on. But don't forget the vote of the Supreme court that will allow more big corporations to get their guys and gals in office.

Frankly, I don't trust either major political party to get things right anymore.

I kinda wish they would all leave Washington and let a high school civics class run the government. They would do a better job.

Anonymous said...

8:52, it would probably be in your best interest to do your homework on this one. It's easy to go after the first thing on your mind but if you could get past the "Booster-Boys", "Turf", "Indoor Facility" thingy, you might find it's time for some members to "hit the road" and for good reason. There are some who tend to take their position a little further than they should. If you'll do a little research, get involved and ask questions, I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out. It's not just about "Turf".

Anonymous said...

Booster boys may also be protecting "home turf" as they both have wives that teach at Rann which has a head administrator under fire because of her lack of leadership. It becomes difficult to criticize when "protection" is on the board. When over half of your faculty wants to escape compared to less than 5 asking to leave Carson, something smells.

M-M said...

9:07 I might take you up on that bet, but let me correct your statement. They have given personal time towards athletics, not the schools. Thus the priority problem.

mzchief said...

To anonymous 9:07...
Just because the "booster boys" have GIVEN personal time to the schools/athletics does not give them more of a right to determine how TAXPAYER dollars are spent.

Voters need to pay attention to assure they do not elect people who will piss off TAXPAYER dollars.

Anonymous said...

That girl from Precious is a big gal.... I bet you're right too.

Anonymous said...

Amen, Mzchief. However the booster boys vote will ALWAYS be the opposite of my vote. Athletics are way over-rated. How can someone be even considered for the Board when they have a spouse working in the system. Isn't that nepotism or something illegal? Conflict of interest or something?

wordkyle said...

917 - I have to disagree with your opinion on the Supreme Court decision. It freed up corporations (of all sizes) and unions to spend money on advertising for or against a candidate or issue. Contributions to politicians are still banned. In other words, the SCOTUS decision allows more freedom of speech. A kneejerk dislike of corporations should not disqualify the principle.

M-M said...

9:18 I am involved and have asked questions. Think about it, school districts exist for the sole purpose of education, not athletics. Athletics are 'extra-curricular'. So, you want board members like Jeff and Gary who's sole purpose in running, at the prodding of the booster boys, is to see that athletics interests are met? And involved in making decisions involving millions of dollars.

Sorry, but I would much rather have Jerry & Ruby, who are past educators and administrators and who's vision is based on education being the #1 priority.

Anonymous said...

9:19-You hit the nail on the head. Her brother is already on the school board. One would think that would be enough, but no. Now her "cronies" want to have their husbands on the board so that no one will ask questions.

I'm sorry, but if 33 teachers from Rann asked for a transfer and only 3 from Carson did, there is a problem. Why isn't the school board asking that question?

M-M said...

I would also like to add to my last post, that Jerry and Ruby are not anti-athletics. It's just that they view education as the top priority.

Anonymous said...

While I don't necessarily believe that Decatur has to "keep up with the Jones" when it comes to athletic facilities, I DO believe that there is a DIRECT correlation between children INVOLVED in activities (including athletics) and success. Have you seen the Ag barn @ the HS? What about the Auto shop? All First-Class facilities! Why not upgrade a crumbling stadium.....Bridgeport has a great little complex including PLENTY of restrooms! Was anyone @ the track meet that Decatur hosted @ the HS track last week? For you Athletic Bummers, Decatur has a great program with great athletes. Our track facility: No restrooms (3 porta potties), no bleachers, windy and cold.....elderly people couldn't even walk up the hill! Colleyville Heritage posted on their school website to "BRING CHAIRS. NO SEATS". That folks, is downright embarassing and needs to be corrected. I absolutely WILL vote for someone willing to correct that.

8:36, you are right about the Dent book. It is a great read. The Masonic Home property is in the process of being developed by retired Cowboy Emmitt Smith. I remember it being west of 287 and south of Berry Street. In my youthful days we scrimmaged the athletic teams. The orphans were tough hombres even then.

Your authentic friend has had quite the cluster!$^% of a morning. Yahoo account = hacked. Spam email sent to friends and family indicating I've been mugged and am penniless in London. FB account hacked = profile deleted and Lord knows what else. I've spent the morning checking my banks, credit cards, paypal, etc. I guess the good thing is that since 6:45 a.m. I've heard from tons of people that I hadn't heard from in years - checking on my well-being and some even ready to run on down to Western Union on my behalf. Nice to be loved. Ugly to be hacked. Two funny things: 1) I would hope that people who know me would realize I would NEVER send a message using such poor grammar and spelling as my alter-ego did this morning, and 2) I'm more than a little amused at the people ready to jump in and rescue me who would not even on the list of folks that I'd call if something bad really had happened. Two folks even called my employer to make sure that I wasn't in London! ....oh, and three ex-boyfriends (didn't realize that I still had emails for them in my contact list and/or that they still had my cell number) called to check on me. Really - does your wife know you were ready to come to my rescue??? Good times.

Ernest, Making a sexual inuendo joke at a New Years Eve party as opposed to bilking the taxpayers out of thousands of dollars is far worse? What planet are you from?

M-M said...

10:08 That track up at the high school was originally meant to only be a practice track, not a competition track. The track on 51 was suppose to still be the competition track. So, if the coaches are using that one on the hill for competition, it's their own fault that the district gets embarrassed by not having seating or facilities. It's not the fault of any of the current school board members.

Anonymous said...

I am hoping that the voters in Boyd school district will vote to re-elect Hopkins, Partain and Hammon as they are the best qualified now in the challenges that face our school district.

If you would read my comment again, you will notice that I said that what Rangel did is far WORSE than what Massa did. Personally, I don't care about a Senator's personal life as long as it does not interfere with his job. Rangel actually violated many federal laws and should have been prosecuted if he were not in Congress.

Anonymous said...

M-M @ 10:48. Are you a runner (or maybe even a walker)? Go down to the track on 51 and look @ the holes (and patches) all over the track. It's "tolerable" for daytime practices but that's it. Do you know where the lights @ the 51 track (that don't illuminate the turns) came from? They are the recycled ones that came from the baseball field last year after the UIL said those didn't meet standards. See where this is going? Because of Athletic Bummers, the district is forced to "fix" issues with band-aids such as used lights and hole patches. If you run, you know that running on a turn and stepping in a hole (on a dark track) is a great way to injure yourself. The coaches had to move the meet to the HS track. Yes, it was designed for practice but the surface is good. So what's the solution? Patch up the holes and cross your fingers or put some $$ in some quality upgrades in ALL of the athletic facilities. No different than the roads around town: keep fillin' in the holes or resurface the road?

Anonymous said...

"crumbling stadium" ???

I don't see any crumbling stadium in Decatur.

M-M is correct about the track. The one built behind the new high school was to be a practice facility. (You'll recall it became lighted without any kind of vote to light it, too.)

I pay taxes that are already way to high to that school system. Maybe they need to manage their budget better. I will never vote to build anything anymore that will raise my taxes even more. Period!

Anonymous said...

Well.........knew it couldn't last.....JUST HAD TO HAVE A DRINK DIDN'T YOU B.G.????
Is the Random thought gal just fat or is she preggo?

Anonymous said...

11:13, so your solution is to build brand new facilities when the school allows the current ones to run down?

Schools everywhere keep up their facilities for YEARS. There is no reason for the track on 51 to be in the shape you say it is in, IF there is responsible maintenance on it.

So, what's up with the Rann Elementary admin? Who knows the scoop about why the teachers there want to leave so badly?

Anonymous said...

Did ya'll notice the update today?
The school board changed the cheerleading rules last night and the tryouts are today....lol.

There are some mamas who don't want their daughters to lose their spots to girls who are more skilled...Hey can we do that in volleyball too cuz my daughter is worried about the good players coming up from middle school next year?

Anonymous said...

Oh the shame! Port-a-potties in Decatur schools.

Anonymous said...

M-M, how many dollars do you pay a year in school taxes? I'd imagine what little you contribute wouldn't pay for a turf turd!

M-M said...

11:13 The light poles at 51 were old wood ones from probably the Korean War era, deemed by Mr. Pryor as dangerous and needing to be replaced. They had one metal pole that fell because of cracks in it at the baseball field. Turns out the manufacturer of said metal poles produced quite a few defective ones because light poles were replaced all over north Texas. The board voted to replace all of them and if any poles were found to be sound and not defective, then those would be used to replace the old wood ones at 51. It was just a sound money saving move.
If the surface is bad at 51, then a decision needs to made on whether to resurface it or not, which it seems like that has been done 10 times since I've lived here, or determine if they want the track at the high school to be the competition track and then build bleachers and facilities at that site to accommodate such events.

Anonymous said...

Geez, M-M! Make up your mind! You start this whole chain of comments with "the Booster Boys are at it again" but then your last comment suggests that if the surface @ 51 is bad then a decision needs to be made to resurface or "build bleachers and facilities @ the HS site"..........that's what the Boosters are trying to do! Gary is a stand-up guy. Kevin Haney got a lot of flack from the Bummers when he was elected. The common denominator is that they have kids who participate in sports........why SHOULDN'T they want nice, safe facilities?

Anonymous said...

Problem at Rann is the principal. Not too popular from what I hear. Of course the school board doesn't care because her brother is on it! Not right!

Anonymous said...

Our staium isn't crumbling. It's perfectly fine for boys to run around on and smash into each other. Not sure why we have to pay tax dollars to upgrade something so meaningless and trivial and contrary to the PURPOSE of education, which is to train a young MIND for a career.

If the track on 51 is in disrepair, it is the fault of the AD and the maintenance department.
The district has the money for everything to be fixed properly and adequately.

Has track season been moved forward and caught the AD and maintenance department by suprise?

Probably not, the current admin prefers bulding new over maintaining existing.

Anonymous said...

How many teachers are at Rann? That must be 80% of the faculty! Can I ask to move my kids to the new school?

Even my child could figure out the current principal at Rann was no where near as good as her predecessors.

M-M said...

1:12 My point was that a decision needs to be made where the competition track is going to be and stick with that and maintain that properly. Those are needs not wants. The booster boys concentrate on wants like turf & indoor practice facilities that are not needed. There is no contradiction there.

You help make my point by admitting that those like Haney are there for one purpose. Good facilities for their kids to play in. Pure selfishness. A board member is to be concerned about the needs of every student in the district, whether they participate in athletics or not.

Anonymous said...

So being married to a teacher at Rann with no school administration experience makes you a more qualified candidate than the retired school administrators? Wasn't it Jeff Elder that was passing out flyers encouraging a FOR vote in the bond election to all the parents dropping off kids at the Rann morning loop?

Anonymous said...

Here's the truth!! Some teachers are leaving rann because they cant' accept a good thing when they see one. Principal, Melonie Christian is doing exactly what she is supposed too. It's because people and teachers have been able to call their favorite board member and complain which is totally unprofessional. We have a few board members who are up for re-election that cant seem to follow the code of ethics. It's that simple! Small town politics must end this May!! Vote for Jeff Elder and Gary Clayton if you want Decatur to recover from the previous boards bad/untrustworthy reputation.

Anonymous said...

Did u know Rann has had 5 principals within the last 10yrs!!!U mean to tell me that all 5 have been bad?? I don't think so. Some teachers have made it miserable for anyone trying to bring change. Who wouldnt want to leave a campus who has NO respect for their Principal?? You can't work in the environment these disrespectful teachers have created. I support Mrs.Christian 150%, and can't wait for another yr with her. Rann will overcome this drama.

Anonymous said...

For any of you that believe that the problem at Rann is the current principal, you need to investigate for yourselves exactly how many principals Rann has had in the last 8 years. I believe there have been atleast 3 principals, not counting the current one, in 8years. That is an incredible administration turnover rate. Maybe it could be SOME of the staff. Walk thru the halls and you will see SOME teachers gossiping about their boss and principal, and you will be disgusted at the lack of respect. Whether you like your boss or not, it is only professional and respectful to handle your disagreements properly and not in the halls for all parents to see.

Anonymous said...

If you would like to know what the problem at Rann is, you should research how many principals the school has had in the last 8 years. I believe that it has been atleast 3, not counting the current principal. That is an incredible administrator turnover rate, which is VERY uncommon. This fact tells me the problem might be SOME of the staff. Walk through the halls and watch as the staff gossips about their boss and principal for all parents to see. The lack of respect for the principal is disgraceful . Even if you disagree with your boss, you should be professional enough to handle your business properly.

Anonymous said...

Agreed!

M-M said...

4:27 Over 50% of the teachers want to leave Rann "because they can't accept a good thing when they see one"? There is absolutely zero logic in this statement. Can you enlighten a little more here?
What are people and teachers complaining about to board members?
How have the board members not followed the code of ethics?
In what way has the board had a bad/untrustworthy reputation?

Just wondering what the truth is. You stated you had the truth, but you created more questions than you answered.

Anonymous said...

The ONLY reason they want to be on the board is get the vote count for the Turf and indoor field.
Don't try and blow smoke up my arss.

12:03 I am not anti-athletic, I am pro-education while keeping athletics in its proper perspective.

1:16 I am not bashing Jeff or Gary. I like Jeff and Gary a lot. They are great guys and great members of the community. I just disagree with them and the others and the emphasis placed on unneeded athletic facilities etc. The booster boys have become like pawns in the hands of coach Story and are blindly going about attempting to push his unwritten agenda and obey his every whim and will go to great lengths to do so.

Anonymous said...

Your name M-M? I'm sure Jeff and Gary really dig you also. $12,000 in taxes my arse! If that's true tell your spouse congrats!

Anonymous said...

The "Good thing" is change! Mrs. Christian came from Northwest, so u can't tell me her new ideas aren't worth giving a try. Some staff members just don't like the idea of having to show some respect!
#1 the teachers should not be calling boardmembers!! They should handle it on campus with the principal!!
#2 boardmembers should not be taking their calls!! Other than the fact that this breaks the chain of command, shouldn't admin have complete support by their board??
That brings us to the trust issue. If the board doesnt follow the rules and show professionalism, then who sets the example?? One again, this stupid political game some of u people play must end. Vote for Jeff and Gary!! We must get these board members off!

Did anyone else think it was strange to see Jerry Howard at Rann's Open House?? Kinda funny, maybe he realizes he better start swaying the vote early-- Good luck. Vote for Gary Clayton!!

Anonymous said...

Oh my gosh! I am supporting M-M, and I agree with Mizchief!! I just went and checked the sky isn't falling.
I do have one question...Does anyone else think it is strange that if Elder and Clayton get on the school board then that means 4 members with ties to Rann (Luttrell & Lowery - children that attend there, Clayton & Elder wives work there) will be on the board?
We had a problem with a teacher at Rann and Mrs. Christian did not take care of the problem. She gives a lot of promises that she would do something, but nothing happened.
If 33 teachers are leaving then something is wrong. Maybe ask the teachers, and if they know that they will not be retaliated against, they might tell why they want to leave Rann.

Anonymous said...

did I hear that Mrs. Christian shredded some teacher's teaching materials while that teacher was out of her room? If that did happen, WHY did it happen?

Anonymous said...

At least Jerry Howard is looking out for the taxpayers money somewhat! He has a great deal of experience in the school business and isn't on the board for his own agenda.
The only person that really really needs to leave is Kyle Story.

Anonymous said...

I think I've figured out that i'm only talking to maybe 3 people on here who are haters and just want to start drama. I know this will end when Ruby and Jerry have been replaced. The good parents and supporters of Rann largely outnumber the haters. This is my first time on here and its so funny that I've already figured out the sources. Good people don't put their noses in other peoples business. Get some morals!!

Anonymous said...

Rann is the oldest elementary school so who wouldn't want an upgrade? Bigger classrooms, mold free, don't try to put all the blame on teachers wanting to leave on the principal, nice try though.

Anonymous said...

Seriously, the people who are bashing Jeff and Gary...Instead of posting negative comments why don't you run for the board or PTO or volunteer in some form to make a difference. You could put your energy to a positve use. I do know one thing. Jeff has done nothing BUT support his kids and ALL our schools by putting in thousands of hours of volunteer service. Can you haters say the same thing? And the people blog bashing Mrs. Christian..Think about this. Why is it Rann can never excel above the "Recognized" rating...Maybe it's being ANTI-Change. Mrs. Christian is coming from a school with years of Exemplary Ratings. And she wants that for Rann. So, do I. I am tired of seeing the same old middle of the road ratings and test scores. I want better for my kids. I am willing to accept any change if it leads Rann in the right direction. Though resumes aren't everything..Take a hard look at Mrs. Christian's educational resume. I would like to see the resumes of those who are spreading the hate.

I'd say $1750 is cheap....... so this is how it works. You take the spoiled rotten daughter of a millionaire family (Palin). These millionaires buy some unethical lawyers (redundant, I know). They set the daughter up on paper as penniless although she can afford the million dollar legal bill (just falsify this fact for tax purposes). You then use the million dollars, the positioned-as-poor daughter, unethical lawyers and scorch-the-earth lawyer tactics to financially drain the father. He is forced to agree to the $1750 or risk the continued blood letting for another 24 months of legal tricks and time waste tactics. In the real world this is called "extortion" but in our judicial system we call this "justice in the best intrerest of the children". I should know, it happened to me in Decatur but it cost me $3000 per month. Remember the lawyers oath... "in family court if you have t*tties and money, I can get you anything you want"

Anonymous said...

The principals that have left - have left for greener pastures. I don't think that had anything to do with the teachers!
If a teacher's husband is on the school board, I don't think she is allowed to teach in that district.
Mrs. Christian is completely out of touch with reality. The principal at Carson is also fairly new, and they don't have all the teachers wanting to leave.
I think the teachers at Carson feel like they are supported by their leader!

Principals at Rann have come and gone no one can deny that but... who's been there to carry on?
It's the TEACHERS who have gone above and beyond to do whats asked everytime a new adminstrator has come in the door, ensuring that students get the best education possible. Should the candidate's not have the students best interest at heart (besides their own children) DON'T bother to run for a board seat.
They won't have a vote from me.

Anonymous said...

OK. I have read comments posted. Like to comment on a few. First, if several teachers are wanting to leave Rann. Issue is not Mrs. Christian. It's several weak teachers being followers. Give me a few names and I probably could back up that theory. Mrs. Christian exemplifies professionalism and leadership. I just hope that the grass is greener at the new school because where I come from. Burn that bridge with me. I wish you the best. Next, I support getting new facilities. Our kids deserve the best and should feel proud to experience new turf, stadium, track. Look around. We seem behind the curve. Every town seems to be getting new facilities. Does that mean they don't care about education also?
Lastly, who ever the person was that bashed Coach Story. Have you met this man? Issue is not creativity its execution. Sometimes teams don't have the size or talent to execute to win. I only hope that Coach Story and several other coaches are around when my kid reaches high school level. I will stand confident that they will coach with integrity, christian values, and commitment to win.

Fact check: I am pretty sure Jerry Howard has come by room during Open House every year since he came on the board.

He always tells me, "know that you are appreciated."

Anonymous said...

I appreciate the school board being open and considerate enough to take ALL phone calls. We voted them in, and that is what is important. They are there to serve US!! They also need to attend all the events at the schools.
If the issue to leave Rann is not Mrs. Christian.. then what is it? The fact that only a handful requested to leave Carson should tell us exactly the truth.
I agree with the person who said the teachers at Rann are wonderful, professional, and have picked up the slack. Most have been teaching for a very long time. I consider them the professionals, not a newby principal.

thats the problem they've been there too long...they don't care for adjustment or advice!

Let us remember the task at hand, its the school board election in May. We must get rid of Jerry and Ruby. I feel quite confident this will happen.

Anonymous said...

If you think Jerry and Ruby don't have their own agenda then you are sadly mistaken. Ruby is trying to show everyone "who is boss" since she was never promoted to principal at Rann. Makes you wonder that if she had all the answers on how to "fix" everything why the heck didn't she do it while she was there? I think she was the assistant principal for several years on that campus. and from what I hear, Jerry had his own problems with the people on his board and central administration wherever he came from. I think he's decided to be the thorn in our administrators sides to get personal revenge and satisfaction from giving someone else grief. I'm not really for new turf but I'm willing to give the two new guys a chance at making positive decisions instead of negative ones. I've been to one of the board meetings and all Ruby and Jerry did was try to prove to everyone how "smart" they were about education and it felt like they thought they had all the answers. I think we have to trust the people that have been hired to do the job - the principals. They are on the front lines and you have to assume they are going to make suggestions that will be in the best interest of all the kids in our school.s

M-M said...

8:46 So, you have been to one board meeting and have all the answers and have completely psycho-analyzed Ruby and Jerry and know their motivations? Wow, that is awesome. So, you would rather vote in two guys who's sole purpose is to further athletics, which only benefits a few students, than two who's priority is education and benefits all students. That is awesome logic. Good one.

Anonymous said...

m-m since you have all the right ideas.. why arn't you running? it takes some serious guts to be in the public eye. i give props to ruby and howard for all they have tried to do in the educational dept. change is needed tho and if these so called "booster boys" don't get the job done then there is always a chance to vote again. it is sad to see all the bashing going on towards mrs. christian and coach story. its easy to set behind a desk and point out all the wrong things these admins do but where is the positive support at?? since story has arrived hes done nothing but fill the stands on friday nights! where was decatur before he got here? a joke! and as for mrs. christian, god forbid someone coming to a school whos academics have not been where they should be and wanting nothing but success but instead she is thrown under the fire cause teachers want to keep doing what they've been doing. isnt it the principles job to further the teachers in there teaching methods?! hard to do when they won't listen!

M-M I actually have some good friends who are school employees and that's where I got my additional info from. Not just the one or two meetings I have attended. But I like how in your eye because someone is passionate about something (ie. athletic facilities) that it makes them unfit to run for school board. They are still only ONE vote and it's not like that issue comes up at every meeting. In fact, I'm guessing it hasn't been discussed since it was voted down. I am assuming most candidates run because they care about an issue but once they get there, realize there are a whole lot more issues that have to be dealt with than the one that made them run in the first place. I don't think you should make a judgment that people can't be rational about making decisions even when it's something they are passionate about.

9:59 I agree Coach Story turned our program around and I have enjoyed it very much. But I just flat out disagree with him when he tries to insist that turf and an indoor practice facility are a need. They are a want not a need.

On the Rann issue, I don't know much about that other than I have heard things were not shall we say in harmony there. But I certainly don't know the cause and by reading the entries here still don't.

10:39 One word...'monopoly'. The booster boys have three on the board now (Alling, Haney, Lowery) and adding two more would give them 5 out of 7 on the board. In other words, anything they want, anything Story wants will be given. It's hard for me to believe that anyone in there right mind would want that. Athletics is already overly emphasized (not that I don't like athletics, I love it, but in perspective and secondary to education) and this would make it way worse.

Anonymous said...

M-M, I don't think you love anything but yourself and listening to yourself talk. Most of what you say has absolutely no truth nor integrity to it. I think that it is such a shame for people to be allowed to come on this blog and talk about issues as if they know anything about it or have any proof. I'd venture to say that you have no idea what goes into being a school board member. One poster was right when he said that there are many other issues for these board members to address besides athletics. Do they get any thank you or pat on the back for that? How many of you would be willing to put in the hours WITHOUT pay to do the job that they are doing? I'm sure that you wouldn't. So, until you are willing to post your name or fill out your packet to run for the board, then keep your opinions to yourself. We don't want to hear them. They are lies.

Anonymous said...

and where is YOUR name, 12:20?

M-M said...

12:20 Would you be so kind and please list for me all the lies I've posted? I would really appreciate it.

You said,"One poster was right when he said that there are many other issues for these board members to address besides athletics." Is this such a big revelation to you? It's just a BIG DUH! Everyone knows there's more to being on a board than athletics you nimrod. But it's primarily for athletics that these guys are running. Sheesh!

Anonymous said...

M-M, I happen to know Jeff Elder personally and know that he has been considering running for school board way before any issue about turf came up. I also know that ALL of your "booster boys" are want their children academically challenged more than they want them athletically challenged so they will hold teachers and administrators accountable academically. You are entitled to your opinion, but you are putting down some good people because of motives you are convinced they have. I wonder if you would be willing to say any of this to their faces? Ruby and Jerry are also good people, and they have apparently had a strong impact on board issues, but ask the teachers how their educational backgrounds helped them when they voted to buy the cscop curricullum. I have friends that teach on various campuses throughout the district and that purchase was a major waste of taxpayer money according to them. Please investigate before you slash the good names of people.

Anonymous said...

I'm not M-M, but I agree with him/her that these guys just want a monopoly to run whatever they see as important through, be it turf or stadium, or whatever other stupid wasteful thing they want. Academics is what is important, not athletics. Secondly, I still don't think teachers' families should be allowed to be on the Board. I'll vote against not only them but their athletic improvements each and every time they come up for a vote, and I'll try to persuade everyone I know to do so also. Alling, Elder, Clayton have no qualifications to make these decisions other than their own special interests, be it athletics or their wives' careers.

Talk about principal turnover - look at the middle school. Those poor guys have been run through the ringer since moving into new middle school building. 4 years - 2 principlas and 2 assistant principals. I wonder if we were building a new middle school and teachers had a choice to move - just how many of those would want to move too?

Everybody used to think Boyd had the crazy school board. Decatur is putting them to shame!

Anonymous said...

Why do you all think everything is a conspiracy? Why do people automatically assume that if anyone, I mean ANYONE, that wants to be on the board or be a school administrator in Decatur ISD that they are all automatically part of a huge conspiracy. Who in the hell wronged this community, so long ago, to cause this kind of crap to happen all the time??

I sometimes wonder if anyone thinks that anyone has the best intentions at heart anymore. It is so very sad that this community has so dark of a heart to think that the automatic reaction to anything is bad instead of good.

There are good people in this community that will probably never come to serve public or elected office because there is no respect or civility. I am sure Jerry Howard, Ruby Quanz, jeff Elder and Gary Clayton all wanted to hear all this crap said about them.

Board members don't get paid. They don't have to do this. Whatever their intentions, the odds are overwhelming that their intentions are not corrupt.

This community should be ashamed at it's negative nature.

I for one think all of you writing on this blog, have to remember what school is for--
It is to educate our children so they can make it through life.
A jacket received at school will not buy food later in life. Education is the way for our children to get ahead in the game of life.
I for one am going to vote for Jerry and Ruby. Because I know they have the experience and knowledge to better my children in their education at Decatur.
There are problems at Rann-
when so many teachers request a transfer to another school.

I have read all of the 102 comments posted on this blog and the biggest majority of them regarding Decatur I.S.D., employees of the district, and community members. I am just astounded that people post things about all these people that contribute great things for our school and community. As an educator with 25+ years under my belt I know up front that teachers must have the support of their board members and principal. All of this bashing people's good names does no good but harm. It makes me sad for the teachers and especially the kids.I have seen the blog bring out good happenings such as the spread of prayers for people in need, but this kind of blogging will not bring anything but more gossip, tears, and hateful attitudes.

3:24, are you saying that because people are having their say about why Jeff and Gary are running for the school board, they are bashing them? Give me a break! This is, and always has been, a community that will talk opinions about candidates for any elected office. I think that goes for the entire nation during election times as well. You must be some kind of numbskull to say just because folks are putting out the word that Jeff and Gary want the turf issue to pass, then their names are being bashed. What nonsense.
Most people in the community know all of these people rather well. That's what comes from living in small towns. Everyone has a right to their opinion and reasons for voting for or against a candidate. And whether you like it or not, political candidates put themselves right out there for people TO DEBATE their issues, qualifications, and reasons for running for board positions. How dare you say those who put this discussion in writing are "slashing the names of good people." These people are friends of the community and will continue to be such after the election. But they don't all have the same stance about what is best for the school kids AND the taxpayers monies. Neither you nor anyone can squash people's opinions and debates about those stances. Welcome to the real world!
Best of luck to all candidates, but just remember if you lose, you just didn't come across to the majority with the stance that most want. I think it is pretty obvious that the turf issue is a big deal here. I'll be surprised if anyone who wants to spend money to buy artificial turf wins this election.

I for one appreciate their community spirit and willingness to serve. Best wishes to each of you!

So if Clayton wins the board seat, which is going to suffer more? Our county extension office or the school board position? And then to Jeff Elder, this guy has so many irons in the fire trying to pay for his long paved driveway that there is no way he could concentrate on the issues at hand. Both of these dude's are married to Rann employees and have motives that are not at the best interest of our community and our children!

who ever M-M is you need to keep talking you are proof there needs to be some changes around here the 70's are gone dude, if you check all the booster boys kids are A to B students, and its not all about altletics, our facilities in this school dist. are falling apart, someone needs to do something about it, we dont need all new facilites just take care and up keep what we have.Thats including the school buildings and athletic facilities, lets not be the arm pit of Wise county.

WHOA 11:13 way up top. You claim that UIL deemed the old baseball field lights not acceptable or not within UIL regulations.

That is a farce. Yes, it was presented to the board and administration that way, and they bought it. Obviously you did, too.

I didn't, and when I heard that, I called UIL. They have NO, I repeat, NO, regulations regarding lights at a UIL school sanctioned baseball field. In fact, they don't even require lights.

And M&M at 12:30, the DISD representative DID not tell the board they were unsatisfactory, he told the board they didn't meet UIL standards.

I get it, IF they weren't safe, but to tell the school board they don't meet UIL standards - well that's just not true.

Call UIL and ask them for yourself. Or, just go online and read baseball regulations.

We've got great baseball coaches and a great team, and they deserve safety. But, the DISD board and administration also deserves honesty.

Anonymous said...

So for those of you who think you know exactly what the agenda is for Gary and Jeff-- you've asked them right? And they told you this right??

Yeah, that's what I thought - you've never even talked to them.

I don't know Jeff very well, but I have no complaints. Gary Clayton is an outstanding man, great citizen, and cares for kids. I've personally heard him offer to help another's children out, for no real reason, except that he cares.

I think a change would be good for DISD. I plan to vote for Jeff and Gary because I simply think we need change.

10:42 I don't know about the UIL regulation but I do know that the lights were unacceptable because of safety. One of the light poles fell during a practice last year. Had that been during a game instead of a practice it could have been a terrible tragedy. Where the pole fell is in a place where children play during the game. Also, because it fell into the parking lot and not into the field where players were practicing, we can only thank God that no one was hurt. The lights at the old track were not any better but worse. They installed new lights at the baseball fields and fixed the old baseball lights and put them at the track. Seems like a smart move to me. Something had to be done and I think that this was a finacially responsible way to handle the situation. I'm sure that if lights are deemed unsafe, then they probably don't meet UIL regulations. Let's don't try and make this into one more thing to bash the DISD about, they are only putting the students and communities safety first.

Anonymous said...

8:24 am -

I agree, if lights are unsafe, or anything else, for that matter, is unsafe, that it needs to be fixed immediately.

I'm not bashing DISD, but expect them to be honest.

I DON'T, however, think a lie had to be told to the DISD board and printed in the local newspaper, to get it done though.

That just causes me to NOT trust DISD, and I don't want to feel that way, nor should I.

And, NO, it wasn't against UIL, and NO, it didn't NOT meet UIL regulations because there are NONE regarding lighting at baseball fields. It sounds like you're trying to justify a lie. To that, I don't agree.

I don't want to second guess them when they say we "need" something, and then propose a bond they're asking me to vote for.

I have faith in DISD, but honesty is a must! Don't you agree? Or is it OK to tell a lie to get what you want?

Who exactly is M-M?
Clues found in the comments: Must be a female, husband has an association with taxes, doesn't care for "booster boys."

Enlightened One said...

As someone who does know Jeff and Gary personally, I think the name Booster Boys fit them well but not for the reasons given above. They are boosters of the school district including academics and athletics. They do happen to have kids who are good athletes and they are interested in seeing their kids get the best educations available to them. I'd throw Haney and Lowery in that mix too. Haney's kid is ranked in the top 10% of his class - doesn't sound like it's all about athletics, does it? Oh yeah, Haney made it through law school and got to go to college on a scholarship. Not a bad mix of education and athletics. Lowery got to go to college on an athletic scholarship too. Clayton's older kids are going to A&M and, say what you want about the Aggies, but it appears academics are pretty important in that family.

Yep, I think they are all booster boys who will work for a better education, better educational facilities and better facilities for all extra-curricular activities. They have my vote.

7:50- get your facts straight. You might be a redneck if you think a nice gravel road is a long paved driveway. I'm sure they would like to have a long paved drive, but they don't. Ya got the wrong house, buddy.
And to the wise one that said the wives of Gary and jeff need job security, you must not have ever had the privilege to have either person as your child's teacher. They are both outstanding educators!

M-M: I was a teacher at Rann when Ruby Quanz was an assistant principal, and I can tell you that she made most of the teachers' days a living hell! If anyone has a motive, it is her! She is power hungry- bottom line! I left there as quickly as I could because of her.
And it is correct that some of the teachers are out in the hall gossiping about the principal; they are Quanz's cronies. That place is viper's nest! Granted, there are some great teachers there, Mrs. Elder and Mrs. Clayton being two of them. And for those of you wondering why there have been four principals in four years, that would be due to some very mouthy, vocal teachers, and a board that is so quick to listen and act before asking questions. As for the claim that the previous principals have left for greener pastures, why don't you find one and ask. I believe there is one that still works in the district; I'm sure she would love to finally have the opportunity to tell her side of the story and the part that Quanz played in it.
Come May, I'll be voting for Elder and Clayton. At least their so-called "turf" motive will benefit the students of DISD.

9:16 I too was a teacher at that campus when Ruby was VP. I do not agree with your opinion of her as a person or administrator. I guess that goes to show that people do have different opinions about situations and people. I would guess that we probably taught together on the campus. I can't imagine who you must be but I guess that's why we both put in as anonymous.

3:56- What qualifications are needed exactly to be on the school board might I ask? Gary Clayton graduated with a Masters from Texas A&M University. What more should he need? And his degree was Ag Education.. He seems qualified enough if you ask me.

7:50- Little do you know, but Gary Clayton is going to retire from the Extension service in August, so he will be fully dedicated to being on the school board my friend.

For all of you that believe Mr. Clayton is not for education.. His oldest daughter graduated from Decatur in '04 and was in the top 10%. She was also a class officer, cheerleader, and an athlete. His younger daughter graduated in '09 and she was also in the top 10%. She was also a class officer and an athlete. Oh and they both attend a D1 University. Texas A&M might I add.
So don't make up scenarios that he just cares about athletics. He had to be a motivator for his children, so they would want to further their education.
