I Live For This Stuff

Ole Miss, a fine university in, I think, Mississippi (and the college home of at least one Blog reader), is in a bit of a tizzy today. It seems as if fans that showed up for football games had a propensity for chanting "The South will rise again!!" during the fight song. (Example at the 50 second mark below). Well, the the Grand Poobah of the university, who obviously was not raised in Wise County, said that the chant is offensive and, in light of the fact that the crowd didn't heed his warning last week to "cut it out", has now banned the fight song completely. I'm sure the chanting students will retaliate with "State's Rights!" signs, but we'll have to wait and see.

I don't blame the people for being mad; that's ridiculous. It's a free country and they should be able to yell about the south if they want to. She's prob. from some northern state.

Id like to motor boat her! WOW!

neways, why dont we just make Ole Miss a white college? They can have their black colleges, why cant we have our white colleges? Mississippi would be a great place to start!

The Grand Poobah is just trying to avoid having lawsuits and Jesse Jackson on his ass! Just b/c we have a nigga President now doesnt mean you have to quit playing your fight song, just no school spirit from the Head Ass!

I have NEVER seen a group of people sooooo bloody proud over having lost a war as the people in the Heart of Dixie. It is tantamount to Nazi Germans doing reenactments of battles and singing old Hitler tunes. Give the Nazis credit for realizing they got their arses kicked and have the grace of character to act like they were mud stomped.

Southern Civil War Rednecks = Ultimate Craziness.

Anonymous said...

There are no blacks who live in the South to help it rise again????
How ridiculous.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, good point 1:41...why do they get away with all Black colleges and we don't have all White ones? Reverse discrimination at its best. I'm not a hater of other races, but I believe in an equal rights playing field. What's not ok for some should not be ok for all.

Anonymous said...

Mzchief....Now why do I not find it surprising that a native Englishwoman would not understand Southern pride in the Rebel Flag and the song Dixie? You have no frame of reference. Perhaps we should all strut about calling ourselves "Major","Colonel" or "Brigadeer" because we are proud of our military service in the British Army in our considerable colonial lands, the establishment of which involved the killing of many ethnic persons for the Crown.

I believe if all cultures have a "right" to continue their cultures here in these United States, then the South certainly has its right to maintain its southern culture as well.

2:24, I'm a Southerner and I do not find racism and slavery to be a part of our culture that needs to be remembered and rejoiced. Rednecks, rise up properly and evolve already. Just what specifically do all you racists on this board have against anyone not 'white' or straight, whatever 'white' is. I'm considered as 'white' as they come but my mixed up roots originate from all over Europe and I can get along just fine with my black, brown and gay friends. They're people too, get over it.

Anonymous said...

Long live the South, the Confederacy, and Dixie. I'm extremely proud to be known as a southerner, on a number of levels.

What is the deal with all of these black liberal weenie professors that have a hard on for white people? I thought now that the annointed token half black president was in office that racism would come to an end? If the blacks are more angry now than they were before, let's impeach Obammy and get back to the good old days.

How stupid

The South is great for a number of reasons which have nothing to do with racism. For instance, the southerners are courteous and actually have manners and speak to strangers when they encounter them. The folks from the north are unfriendly and just plain rude. I'll take a nice southern mint julep and polite conversation any day over NYC and the crazies.

Anonymous said...

I don't understand. The ole miss mascot is "the rebels" as in, civil war rebels.....but the chancellor doesn't want the saying the south is gonna rise again?

I'm so confused. Head explodey!

I think the LSU girl prefers dark meat.

I agree with 3:18. Sounds like a double standard to me.

I know this is off subject, but I thought it was a very nice gesture for Slate to post a slideshow of the DC snipers'(John Allen MUHAMMAD and Lee Boyd Malvo) kill locations, from their vantage point. I thought it was a wonderful tribute to their body work, a nice remeberence wouldn't you say. I mean, who really cares about the victims anyway, just a bunch of insignificant people who's lot in life was to walk into snipers bullet. It would have been incredibly arrogant to do a slide show, or a short article about each of the victims lives prior to walking into a bullet.

Damn i think they should ban obama ...the dollar just fell to a 15 month low....thanks pimp daddy for leaving us with this change 50 cent mf!

K1p said...

Ehhmm... There are not any black colleges in America anymore. I am fairly certain that any of you WCC's can go to Prairie View A&M if you choose to.

The choice of song is not so offensive as much as it is stupid.

K1p said...

If you think the POTUS has anything to do with the dollars value you are mistaken. The dollar is priced by very wealthy Americans, most likely republicans, who want it that way because it is good for their investments, mainly oil.

K1p

That has got to be the most ignorant comment I've ever heard about how the dollar is valued. Did Jon Stewart tell you that?

If you want blame, try our valiant leaders at the Fed/Treasury/PPT (aka Paulsen, aka Helicopter Ben, aka Goldman Sachs, fka Gold Sacks, afka Gold Mansacks), not the idiots in Congress, and Bush, who ultimately signed the TARP. They're hardly qualified to do anything except pass whatever these 'financial geniuses' recommend. Translated as, we'll tell them its best to pass whatever helps to continue the fleecing of the sheeple's savings to save our irresponsible buddies running our financial institutions.

2:37. Displaying a rebel flag or singing "Dixie" does not make one a racist, just as carrying a Bible does not make one a Christian. Your concept of the "Rebel" mentality does not apply to all Southerners by a longshot.

Denney Crane said...

I don't know about the LSU student body chanting "The South will rise again!!", but looking at that LSU girl gives rise to other areas.

K1p said...

Anon 4:27,

Sure, it's convoluted logic, but the Fed raises or lowers the value (by changing the prime interest rate) based on what? Trying to keep our deficit within a manageable reach. Our biggest import by far is oil. A weak dollar makes for higher cost to import crude. Look at oil company profits. They are not in a proportional line with the cost of crude.

Anonymous said...

4:48, help me out then, I'm talking about the flag of course and not a rebel mentality. If the rebel flag is not a racist symbol (and I would like to see you try arguing that with a KKK or Aryan member), than exactly what does it symbolize, to you? Being pro-slavery? Or being a separatist un-American? I've come to terms that the South lost and I proudly fly the US and Texas state flags here in Texas. To do anything otherwise (ie, fly the Mexican flag on US soil) is beyond having a rebel mentality or cultural preference, its simply treasonous. My opinion.

5:29--So now display of the rebel flag is un-patriotic, treasonous, as well as racist? Why can't you just accept the display of the rebel flag by most for what it is---a simple expression of personal defiance----period. Do you seriously think that the doctors, lawyers, and accountants who like to ride Harleys on weekends and don leather jackets with riding club logos emblazoned on them are advocating defiance of the law? Of course not, and it much the same with persons who like to display the rebel flag. BTW--the KKK did not adopt---key word being "adopt"---it was not given to them, the rebel flag as a symbol until well into the 40's. When I see someone displaying the rebel flag I think of a good ol' boy who probably likes his NASCAR, football, beer, and BBQ--who believes strongly in God, country, and family, and would probably be the first to pull someone out of a ditch, regardless of their skin color or economic status, and be the first to defend their country and women and children from harm without even being asked.

Anonymous said...

You got it 7:17, buddy. I don't give a damn what song you sing or what your rider club logo is but I have a problem with using that confederate battle flag, in any form. If you fly that flag, you are basically in support of a collective secession that ripped our nation apart. Why can't your good ol' boys fly our nation's flag? Oh, you covered that, he needs to be 'defiant' using what is probably the most insulting symbol he can, and doesn't want to viewed as a nationalist. I get it. Sorry

K1p,
for your information, 8 of the 10 wealthiest members of congress are democrats.

why don't you ask George Sorros, dem supporter and currency trader, who sets dollar values.. it ain't the fed!

Bless this Chancellor's yankee heart. It would appear he took this job without knowing a damn thing about Ole Miss cause had he known anything about the school and its traditions, he'd know that this little stunt right here is gonna go over like a fart in a church and with more than just current students. I have an 90 year old uncle that is probably, right this very second, loading my 85 year old aunt into the RV and making the five hour drive to Oxford to whip his ass his ownself.

Next thing you know he'll try to say they can't yell Hotty Toddy at games anymore cause it says "damn" in it and somebody might get their feelings hurt over an entire stadium of people hollering a cuss word.

Asshat.

Who gives a rats ass about what they can or can't do in the South. I know if I could I would be bangin the chick in the pick. Go south and u might just like it!

8:32, thank you for having no concept of honoring your heritage.

Assuming you live here, then please feel free to not fly the TEXAS flag as a bunch of rebels many years ago decided to give the rightful government (Mexico) the finger and break away. And be sure and skip flying Old Glory as that to was the product of a bunch of Old Rebels who gave their lawful King the finger and told England, "Thanks, but no thanks, we can secede if we want."

But please, feel free to overlook history and pick and choose.

*rolls eyes*

I get so tired of people feeling "oppressed" by a flag... I had ancestors on both sides of the Civil War. None owned slaves. Some perished in it. Both sides fought for what they thought was right... AT THAT TIME. A horrible war settled the matter.

You feel that Confederate flag represent oppression? Fine... You can also get rid of the Texas flag since we stole Texas from Mexico. And get rid of Old Glory since we stole the east coast from the English, the West Coast from Mexico, and the plains from the Native Americans.

I am sick of hearing that remembering my heritage = Slavery Worship. Get real... if you think that is true then leave our country as the good ol US of A has done plenty that we shouldn't be proud of... but I don't hear you condemning that flag.

Rant off.

Mr. Mike Honcho said...

And yeah, let's give a good ol shout out for the LSU girl.

My, oh my!

bg--i think they are trying to suggest everyone say "to hell with lsu" instead of the south will rise again...but in my opinion, thats just as offensive. i say we leave it the way its always been, its tradition. apparently the mississippi white knights aka KKK are going to be parading around campus protesting this change..read here: http://www.oxfordeagle.com/news2.html

oh and, HOTTY TODDY! TSWRA.

Honcho,

Thank you for your rational explanation. The entitled, holier-than-thou race baiters continue to think "it's all about them".

Unfortunately, it is exactly this attitude and behavior that make white supremacist groups an attractive option, if not for the simple reason of protesting this new national epidimic: Discriminate uneasonable mandate of birthright for African Americans syndrome aka DUMBAAS. One side effect of this condition is the paranoid delusion that everyone who disagrees with them are racist.

I kinda feel sorry for them in between the times I want to fund sending them back to their country of origin...

DC

Hardly rational, just more redneck logic, right along the lines of fake boobed girls being hot. Here's what's real besides the tits on girls with self esteem: to the victor goes the spoils. In redneck-ese, that means the winner gets to drive the checkered flag around the track, the losers go back to the pits and live to fight again. The South lost, they don't get to fly their secession flag, unless they want another fight, and we've reached the crux of my argument. Furthermore to your 'rational' points, since the reason for the Civil War is now history, and so many other wars have since been fought and won, I suggest you get over them already, or, if you insist on living in the past, go ahead and fly the union jack and mexico flags alongside your redneck flag just to show everyone how unhappy you are about how things turned out.

Anonymous said...

there is no right not to be offended....screw em.

"The South lost, they don't get to fly their secession flag, unless they want another fight, and we've reached the crux of my argument."

You try to take away my right to fly any damn flag I want to and I'll show you a fight. I'll take that crux and shove it up your ass.

I dare you to try... dare you!

Anonymous said...

Hey DC did you read it all: "if you insist on living in the past, go ahead and fly the union jack and mexico flags alongside your redneck flag". I think that pretty much says you can fly whatever you wish up whoever's ass you want. This is STILL 'America', its the dilution of the 'The United States of' half of it that seems to be an infatuation here in the South.

Anonymous said...

Amen, Denney Crane! If I want to fly a confederate flag, I'll do so. I value that era in our history far more than any of the wars fought since. That time is our history is fascinating, and the deep South was such an awesome and timeless way of life. Gone with the Wind rocks, and if I want to remember that era, I will **** well do so, regarding of what anyone else thinks.

Mr. Mike Honcho said...

Hey 11:01 AM... did you read all of my post?

We won in the Rev War.

We won in the War with Mexico.

We lost in the Civil War, (while the half of my anscestors were winners.

That means I will fly Old Glory. I will fly the Lone Star Flag. And I will fly a 1st National, a Stars and Bars, or especially a 6th/15th Texas Inf HARDEE Flag (like you even would know what that is) proudly like I damn well please.

Proud of my ancestors. Proud. Firmly living in the present and much more tolerant than prolly is the norm around here. And certainly more tolerant than you.

As a former student of Ole Miss and sister of a current student, I find the prohibition of "From Dixie, With Love" completely absurd. There was an accompanying article today on wsj.com that said this sort of tradition assault was happening at other SEC schools like auburn and alabama. I understand, and agree, that there should be a ban on confederate flags in the stadium and not allowing Colonel Reb to be the university's formal mascot, but the song? They never post the words "the South will rise again" on the video board while the song is being played, therefore making it the crowd's choice to yell the phrase at the conclusion of the song. This is such an eggregious decision on interim chancellor's behalf. Chancellor Khayat would have never allowed this nonsense.

Hotty Toddy!

Anonymous said...

Because some fans chant something offensive, the band is banned from playing whatever inspired the chants? How dumb is that? The band is not chanting it, nor are the students. I've been there. It's a few townies and old folks who show up for the games who chant that. Not the students. Analogy: a ref throws a flag at a game and 30,000 people start yelling "bullshit" in unison and over and over again. Offensive to me, and probably to lots of people at the game especially those with kids. So, must we ban officiating? Guess so.
