Welcome To Idiocracy

And this week's box office winner is: I saw a mom holding a little baby last night at a restaurant. That, like many things do, stopped me down for a moment. Part of me was really jealous of that little baby. Think about it. With the Internet and the way the world is changing these days, what will that kid be able to experience? The mind boggles. And then I learned a second ago that Mall Cop is the most popular movie this weekend, and now I'm worried that sweet little baby may grow up in a world that I don't want to see. (Now I'm sure My Bloody Valentine is a kick arse movie, but Mall Cop?)

Today's movies are not any more ridiculous than those of years ago. Though, there were more good movies back in the 70s, 80s than today. But there were still plenty of "Kentucky Fried Movies" in the mix back then. The most irritating aspect of movies today is that they move and shake the cameras while filming, making many movies actually unwatchable.

My husband and I enjoyed Gran Torino! No bigtime sound or visual effects, just a good story, well played out. Has humor, and still has that great Clint Eastwood "tough guy." If you haven't seen it, and you want to see a good movie (not great, but good entertainment)...then it is certainly worth the price of admission.

Mall Cop has been promoted to death. Let's see if it has legs (I doubt it.)

Just last night I watched Desk Set (1957) with Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Witty dialogue with no vulgarities. I'm a Tarantino and Mamet fan, so language is not an obstacle, but it was refreshing to see a good comedy that didn't have to rely on swearing or potty humor for laughs.

And today I watched Cool Hand Luke. Life is good. (And nobody can eat fifty eggs.)

Idiocracy is more the movie people should see to know where we are headed...it falls in line with the point of this post, I think.

Speaking of moving and shaking the camera,I can't watch The Shield as it makes me sick at my stomach due to the erratic camera technique they use these days.

What Abou the good ol movies like Blazing Saddles? And All the Mel Brooks movies?

My favorite of all times is The farse on the Frankinstine movie with Gene Wilder Now that was good movie making Funny to everyone but with all the hidden inuindos that were above a certain age group! great stuff and talent to pull off! Everything these days is Really stupid and dirty and you arnt comfortable at all watching a movie with your teenage kids sitting in the room because with out fail some sex scene is going to be acted out leaving no imagination to it! ESp uncomfortable with the GAY crap I mean really is it necessary to bring it into the SCENE we can get the ideal with out having to visually see it! I have yet to Seee Broke Back mountaian and I refuse to watch it cause I dont want to see that crap! Wjhat about all the old spagetti westerns esp the Funny ones?

Well, everyone loves to laugh, and Kevin James is hysterical.

Speaking of movies, next time you rent a movie, look for Vince Vaughn's "A Cool, Dry Place." That was a great movie!

Most of the people who saw Mall Cop are kids with money.......adults won't pay to see crap like this!

I agree with 3:10.

I haven't seen Mall Cop, and I'm not saying it is or will be a great movie, but what do you think people were saying years ago about classics like "Blazing Saddles" or "Airplane!"?

I'm sure the campfire sequence made people think we were headed the way of the 70's equivalent of "Idiocracy."

There's a bit of truth to the movie Idiocracy. Look at how in debt we are, how fat we are and how we polluted our planet has become. Pretty sad when you can't take care of your money, where you live and your own health.

Can you explain "stopped me down" in a future blog? It sounds part redneck, part liberal BS, part Paul Blart-ish.

I would be more concerned if "My Bloody Valentine" topped the box office.

Saw Gran Torino this weekend. It is good, it does have a good storyline, Clint Eastwood is great, has humor, sadness, and sadly - reality. if you can get through the "F bomb" 50 million times, it is worth seeing.

I have to be really honest. Mallcop was a funny goofy movie that really had no intention of winning an oscar. Kevin James is a very talented physical comedian and was very funny in Mallcop. I saw this movie last night and had some good laughs and was pleasantly surprised at how clean it was. It was nice for a change to go to a movie that the whole family could enjoy together.

The 2009 budget deficit includes $$$$$$$$$$$$238 Billion to cover Freddie and Fannie loans! And it may not be enough depending on how much mortgage fraud involved. We need to keep our prison in Cuba and send all these crooks down there.

The film painted such a harsh picture of the way society is TRULY headed I was depressed for days after having watched Idiocracy.

Kevin James rocks! Mall cop was both funny and clean---a hard combination to find in a Hollywood production these days.

Thank all of you for proving Barron's point. Blazing Saddles is a social commentary, but you're too dense to understand it. Even thinking to compare it to Mall Cop proves that nyou need to be first up against the wall.

Gene Wilder (as Jim) said...

Biff, when you're talking about Barry's readers, ..."you've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.
