Inauguration Observations

  • President Bush didn't get much of an ovation when he was introduced.
  • Rick Warren gave the invocation which sounded more like a speech than a prayer. There was even applause during it!
  • Many wondered whether Warren would use Jesus' name in the prayer. He did but in a weird way -- he used about four different variations. I'm not sure I understood that.
  • Edit: Warren called Jesus, "Yeshua, Isa, Jesus [pronounced hay-zeus], Jesus." And I found the explanation as being: He said Jesus' name in the language of the world's three monotheistic faiths: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. (And also in Spanish.)
  • Aretha Franklin then sang "My Country Tis Of Thee" (or whatever the name is). She had one crazy tricked up hat on.
  • The number of people on the mall is absolutely amazing.
  • Justice John Paul Stevens (a good one) then gave the oath of office to Joe Biden. (There was some guy about 10 feet back wearing a cowboy hat.) That, by the way, is one long oath. So I guess at that moment W was the President and Biden was the Vice President.
  • Then there was a four piece ensemble that played a very reverent piece. Nice touch. It was called "Air and Simple Gifts" according to CNN.
  • Odd: It 12:04 p.m. Eastern and NBC just said, "Barack Obama became the President four minutes ago even though he hasn't taken the oath."
  • Time for the oath. Uh. Oh. We had a little bit of a stumble. Man, I've got to watch that again. I'm not sure Justice John Roberts didn't mess up.
Roberts: "I Barack Hussein Obama." Obama: "I Barack . . . " Roberts " do solemnly swear." Obama: "I Barack Hussein Obama do solemnly swear." Roberts: "That I will execute the office of President to the United States faithfully." Obama: "That I will execute . . . [awkward pause]." Roberts: "the off . . . faithfully the Pres . . . the office of President of the United States faithfully." Obama: "The office of President of the United States faithfully." Roberts: "And will to the best of my ability." Obama: "And will to the best of my ability." ....[rest said correctly]
  • I'll get a video of that. It'll be up in seconds I bet. Edit: Got it (it starts at the 33 second mark.)
  • Edit: Woah!! Roberts did mess it up. He should have said: ""I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States"
  • A commenter and I posted the error at exactly the same time.
  • There goes the white man trying to keep the black man down again. :)
  • Someone wants me to point out that Obama's sideburns are uneven.
  • Now for speech. It's a firey tone!
  • "With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations."
  • Then there was a poem. Kind of like something you'd hear in a Beatnik bar on open mic night.
  • Later .... Watching Obama escort Bush to the helicopter is just an amazing and moving sight.

I can't help but wonder how many of these people will still be so overflowing with joy a year from now when they figure out that they will still have to pay thier house payment, or I guess I should say rent in this instance, and pay to fill up thier car with gas. I still have the mental picture of the woman crying and overjoyed when he was elected because all of her money worries were now "magically" solved. I'll bet if we have a raise of hands in 12 months, he wouldn't win again. Not saying McCain was the right person, but I'm also saying that who we now have is not the right one either. Time will tell if I'm a nut or a prophet.

THe first of many stumbles to come.

Anonymous said...

What's that...I think I hear "it's the end of the world as we know it" playing in the background!!

Anonymous said...

John Roberts messed up the oath, and BHO was trying to say it the right way, and it wasn't matching.

Anonymous said...

We're all doomed

Anonymous said...

Seems Roberts tried to do it from memory. He also seemed to make the sentences particularly long to repeat. Let the Justices start resigning!

Anonymous said...

I watched it, it was Hussein who messed up

Scott said...

Here you are BG being a little biased again.

It was Barack Hussein Obama who messed up, not Roberts. Like someone said earlier, the first of many screw-ups in the next four years.

We just need to pray that our country survives.

Anonymous said...

Roberts screwed up..........

Anonymous said...

I don't think he said that he (Obama) would "preserve , protect and defend the constitution.

They should have started over.

Anonymous said...

Did he say "I have a dream" at any point and if he did- did the the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial ejaculate simultaneously?

Anonymous said...

he did say protect, preserve and defend; but he didn't say (nor did Roberts) from enemies both domestic and foreign. Hmmmmm

Anonymous said...

Here is the oath:
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

As you can read from above, John Roberts was not even close, and Obama was trying to say the correct oath, but it did not match what Roberts was saying.

Anonymous said...

It's a neocon trap........

Jarhead said...

Yep. Chief Justice Roberts (a good one) was the one who messed it up.

Obama knew it and gave him a chance to say it again correctly.

Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account - to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day - because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government."

It's no wonder everyone is always making fun of Wise County residents and their ignorant and out of date education and political savvy. It is a new day. It is important to respect the office of the president and pray for the survival of our nation as we know it. The rude and nasty comments serve absolutely no purpose now. It's over. Not all of Wise County is as ignorant as the majority that I see here in their outdated and politically incorrect vocabulary. I am so glad that we all now have a reason to be happy that a new day has arrived in America. Have a great day.

Obama's never had any problem reading the words that other people write for him. It's when he's on his own that he stumbles.

And are these really the words of the man who campaigned and won the Democrat primary?

"...our collective failure to make hard choices..."
"...greatness is never a given. It must be earned...."
(???)
[Greatness is ]"not for those who prefer leisure over work...Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things..."

Those are Conservative principles. If he would govern that way, I'd support him. But as I've said before in reference to this man, words are cheap.

Anonymous said...

Well said 12:52. I have lived here all my life and when I read this blog sometimes I am horried at the ignorance and racism. Barack Obama is our President. True Americans, patriotic Americans should support him whether they voted for him or not. Odds are, the most ignorant racist posters here probably didn't even vote. Our leaders are going to need all our support and prayers to get out of the mess at home and at abroad we are in. Today of all days, let's celebrate being American and the fact that this historic day even occured.

Witnessing the campaign , inauguration and foretelling the Obama presidecny reminds me of my first wife.

When she tried to get me to marry her she promised I could have an orgy in cabo her and 3 of her hottest friends.

At the wedding she would only promise a circle jerk with me and the groomsmen.

After the honeymoon she took my checkbook and credit cards, locked me in a closet with a Hustler magazine and said "Sucker!"

Have you seen all the liberal reporters today? They have the biggest shit-eating grin on their face. For the next 4 years, the reporters are going to cover every move he makes, even if he takes a shit. They will say it with a smile on their face and report that he never takes a bad shit because he is the MESSIAH and can never do a damn thing wrong. Give me an f#$^*&@ break.

"...Wise County residents and their ignorant and out of date education and political savvy."
Yeah, I'm expecting the state board of edu-ma-cation to come shut down all these underperforming schools any time now. Our level of political savvy is your opinion. We feel the same way about yours.
"The rude and nasty comments serve absolutely no purpose now."
What purpose did they serve the last eight years?
I would agree that some comments here are politically incorrect, but to call the entire county ignorant is also very un-PC just because we are mostly conservative and on the opposite end of the spectrum from you "enlightened ones".
I've said it before, Wise County isn't an anomaly. There's racism and intolerance everywhere, even in them newfangled citified places. I'm not saying that makes it okay, just stop acting like we invented hate.
"I am so glad that we all now have a reason to be happy that a new day has arrived in America."

Anonymous said...

12:52 PM - You are "...so glad that we all now have a reason to be happy that a new day has arrived in America." Explain please!

Today the Nation Of Islam, Chicago political machine and voter apathy have given us Barack Obama to be our new president, a man who has never managed, resourced or been the leader of anything in his obscure lifetime. Many of us will remember this day as the most disgusting day in our history.

May the strengths of our Constitution, patriotism and free enterprise system endure and survive this horrible national crisis.

PS - This is not a racist comment.

I was filled with pride today for our country. President Obama is not the answer for all our problems, nor will he be able to fulfill all of his campaign promises, but he is the right leader for our country at this time. He has inspired citizens to take on the responsibility of rebuilding this nation.

Democracy as demonstrated today, leaves a lump in my throat.

Hey 3:30....what an idiot you are. 12:52 hit it on the mark with your comment. "His obscure lifetime..." Are you not aware of his charity work in his earlier years? What have you done to help others? How dare you diminish his community work. And...."the most disgusting day in our history..."
You are so sadly lost and misinformed. WAY TO GO 12:52.

Back atcha 4:47 - You are the typical lame kind of jerk who helped elect him. Noticeably, you completely ignored/overlooked any comment about his lack of experience as a leader, manager or worker at ANYTHING! Same kind of empty BS that brought him to office and will make him a one-term loser that he really is. He did charitable work when he was a kid? Wow! Stupidity has brought you all the way to the blogs. Congratulations!

1:11 Wordkyle This must be the first time you have ever listen to a Democratic Candidate without a conservative filter.

You and many other Republicans have been misled to say the least.

Hey numbnuts at 6:04 - The topic of this thread is the new president and how misfit he is for office, not my charitable work, or have you missed the whole blog? You are probably the same idiot that posted that worthless remark and ignorantly left out that he has never had a job, managed anything and belonged to the Nation Of Islam for 20 years. Get it?

wordkyle said...

602 - I haven't watched five seconds of the inauguration. I got the text of the speech from a written source. The fawning and idolatry are too much for me. And that's just the media.

I chose those quotes carefully. They are principles espoused by Conservatives and demeaned by Liberals. To wit:

"hard choices" are what Liberal Democrats want Americans to avoid. My family chose to have medical insurance rather than nice cars, nice televisions and other expensive toys. Let those who want "free" health insurance make the hard choice to divest themselves of such trappings first.

"Greatness is earned." Said by a man who has achieved less than any major politician in recent memory. He "earned" the presidency through overblown rhetoric and the color of his skin. He "earned" his first political victory by having his opponents thrown off the ballot.

"Greatness is for the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things..." In other words, the "top one percent." These are the same people who Obama has demonized and promised to punish by forcing them to "spread the wealth around."

I don't dispute that these are traditional American principles. So what does Liberal Democrat opposition to them say about the Liberal Democrats?

It is the George W. Bush voters that put Barack H. Obama in the Presidency. If they had not elected the incompetent Dubya for a second term-playhouse-sandbox-president the last election, Republicans would be enjoying a Republican Inauguration today instead of one, they, Republicans, simply loathe. Thank you George W. Bush voters for Barack. Had you known...Hell, you all would have STILL voted for the Trifecta Man in '04. Ha Ha, stupid is what stupid does. Palin 2012!!!!! Ha Ha.

So work on your poetry and wait for the rainbows and lollipops that Obama has promised us all. Meanwhile my behooval will have to wait.

After reading the above comments I begin to question the "Christian Morals" that Wise County tends to project. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the Bible states very clearly that we all are created equal, what you do unto one, you do unto the Lord. The hostile nature of former comments leads me to believe Wise County is, by majority, belonging to the particular Islamic sect which, with hateful intolerance, attacked our country eight years ago. The same Islamic sect you all seem to be so eager to bomb into oblivion and send to the bowels of Hell.

I also think many of the above bloggers should spend countless hours improving their education instead of writing poorly worded criticisms of a man who was Phi Beta Kappa at Harvard. (And just to be clear that does not mean President Obama was a frat boy. I wouldn't want you to get too carried away with the insults.) He is more highly educated than anyone I have ever personally met from Wise County. Of course this is far from an insult to my old stomping ground; the quality of education in Wise County, and Decatur High School in particular is of exemplarity quality. The problem is not the teaching staff or administration. It is instead some "students" pre occupation with fornication, procreation, and inebriation that inhibit their ability to grow into civilized members of society.

I applaud those of you who express your dissent from the ideals of the currents administration with grace and substance. I am one who believes that it is the right of the people to express their discontent in order to form a more perfect union. Our government was made this way and it will be maintained this way. I would like to say that I may or may not be a political supporter of President Obama, however he is the President. To disagree with his politics is one thing, but to attack the man for the color of his skin is to say to the world “I am such an imbecile that I lack the skills necessary to form a cohesive argument.”

As for the primate comment, you are a sorry excuse for a human being. Your lack of tact and personal restraint disgust me. Your ignorance, narrow-mindedness, and existence, in and of itself remind me why I support abortion.

wordkyle said...

933 - Somehow you use anonymous racist postings to justify a blanket condemnation of WC Christians. Not sure about the validity of that.

Next you tout Obama's education -- he definitely has spent a lot of time in school. However, education does not equal judgment, as Obama has demonstrated. (And it was the President's father, Barack Obama Sr., who was Phi Beta Kappa, not the President.)

Finally, I find it highly ironic that to make a point you quote Matthew 25:40 ("And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me") at the same time you proclaim your support for abortion.

One is reminded of Saul Alinsky's Rule #4 for Radicals: Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules. "You can kill them with this because no one can possibly obey all of their own rules." I'm fascinated that there's actually a playbook that Liberals use.
