Random Tuesday Morning Thoughts

  • It's two-for-Tuesday
  • Speaking of that guy in the picture, he had a movie called Surfer, Dude that opened up in 68 theaters last weekend and made $29,708. I heard him say in an interview that it's a movie "about just living."
  • If you were wondering, that was Kat Deluna singing the National Anthem on Monday Night Football last night. Not sure why everyone tries to trick up the National Anthem.
  • That was Tony Romo's 12th game of passing for over 300 yards in less than two seasons. Roger Staubach did it six times in his career. Terry Bradshaw did it four times.
  • It was the beginning of National Latino Month (or something like that) at Texas Stadium and on the ESPN pre-game show I saw a mariachi band playing under the statue of Tom Landry. Really.
  • Wall Street Beating yesterday. But I've truly learned just to roll with it.
  • The Rangers played last night in Arlington. How many people would show up on a Monday night, during the school year, and at the same time the Cowboys are playing?: 13,536 according to the box score.
  • DeShean Jackson launching the ball before he crossed the goal line last night was funny. The announcing crew mentioned that he did a premature swan dive in a high school all-star game that ended up a tad bit short. Photo here. What a knucklehead.
  • John McCain always refers to Obama as "my opponent." Seems odd.
  • I discovered tricked up tuna and other kinds of fish in a sealed metallic bag in the supermarket last night. Bought a couple of them. Can't remember the brand name.
  • 55 degrees outside. Double sweet.
  • Not breaking news: Galveston sounds like a mess.
  • I don't understand people wanting O.J. Simpson to get convicted in his Las Vegas robbery trial because he got away with murder in Los Angeles. Yeah, I understand wanting to strike him down with great vengeance and furious anger, but do you really want a justice system like that? (And this robbery case probably wouldn't have even been filed had it not been Simpson involved.)
  • Jennifer Tilly's sexy vocal cords are 50 today.
  • Just noticed that the Jacksboro paper link on wisecounty.com now requires a paid subscription. I'll take the link down if they don't understand The Internets any better than that.
  • Sign your life has gone terribly wrong: "A 40-year-old man walking his dog in the nude was Tasered by police when he refused to follow an officer's commands." Sign #2: "The man was asked what he was doing and told the officer, 'Allah told me to watch a Bruce Willis movie and walk the dog.'"

That Jackson touchdown (not) was funny, but I was wondering why ESPN doesn't have a goal line shot. Most football coverage does.

What was up with the commercial announcment thing in spanish? Written and spoken in spanish. What country are we in?

The shape our economy is in at this time has nothing to do with whose in the White House. It has everything to do with Coporate greed. Only in America can a person be terminated from their job as a CEO and walk out the door with millions. The mortgage business is a scam and always has been, another reason we are in the shape we are. Again, that was nothing but greed as well. Even though people took loans to buy homes they truly had no idea what an A.R.M. was. All they new is it would allow them to own a home. Now they (we all) are eating it and the mortgage companies have made out like a bandit. A.R.M.'s were pushed on people, encouraged by the mortgage broker and now we all suffer from it in one fashion or the other. I don't have a problem with people being rich as long as they get their wealth honestly. In our "it's all about me society" there needs to be more changes than just Washington.

I agree that greed is part of the problem, but the recent failure in our banking industry IS due to irresponsible financial policies by Republicans and the Bush Administration because of total 'hands off' no regulation approach to the market. Unregulated use of Derivatives, CDOs and Credit Default Swaps were totally out of control. Warning alarms were going off but no action was taken, no common sense was used, no throttle was applied. In 2002, Warren Buffet called complex derivatives 'Financial Weapons of Mass Destruction'.

This will have a ripple affect around the world. We have already lost credibility because of our reckless Middle East war and now we have lost credibility because of our reckless financial policies. Wait! Not bad enough? Republicans are insisting on a reckless energy policy. These are all ""well, it sounded really good at the time"" policies.

My guess is that conservative voters who are brain washed by Hate Radio Talk Shows never read a major newspaper (except for the sports of course). They are told not to read or listen to any other media, so they don't. They will follow orders and continue to vote Republican and believe a sharp shootin' hockey mom is just what the good ole' USA needs. Yup, Yup.

lenders don't want any part of AIG, they are claiming AIG's assetts are totally worthless derivatives and AIG's balance sheet has almost no tangible value whatsoever..AIG is on the verge of filing for bankruptcy with debts/losses of over $440 BILLION DOLLARS...WOW..that's just 1 corporation..! thousands of other companies are bound to suffer even more because of all this.

Anonymous said...

Yes we are repeating a doomed history. Our grandparents history! The only difference our parents had retirement and an economy that would allow them to live on social security, and money to put back into the till.Just think if we had a great depression today? With the population of legal and illegal people in this country.Already crime is on the rise from just a "recession". at 6.5% "documented" unemployment.I'm not a doomsdayer but i am a little worried about my kids future? I know GOD will take care of them but what quality of life will they have if "we the people" dont take care of ourselves.

They had no clue what an Adjustable Rate Mortgage might entail? Um, if a person could not comprehend that might involve oh I don't know, a Mortgage Rate that might- Adjust at some point they don't deserve a home and would have figured out some spectacular way to lose it regardless- smoking in bed, cramming crayons, feces and Hustler Magazines in a toaster etc.

10:59, you just stated exactly what the liberals do. They listen to the Michael Moores, Al Gores, Hillary Clinton's, Babs Streisands, Obamas, Bidens, Kennedy's, Al Frankens, John Stewarts, Jimmy Carters, Oprahs, and Matt Damons of the world and believe their trash. On top of that, you get your information from the biggest B.S.er's of all, the damn paper!! This is exactly why the liberals have problems, they listen to everyone else's B.S. and take it for gospel. I see where Lindsey Lohan has made comments about Gov. Palin. Why don't you go see what she said about her. I am sure it's very, intellligent, first hand information because she's so smart and "in the know" about politics. Jeez, you people need to get real, God help us all.

Instead of marrying sam ronson I think it would be better if Lindsay married me and Jennifer Tilly.

Then we'd buy Ross Simpsons house on BP Lake, build a big slide all the way from the rear balcony down to the water where the fastest boat in North Texas would be waiting.

Then we'd roar around the lake smoking weed and drinking El Presidente Brandy while they fought over me.

That would be cool.

So the stock market is headed south. So what, you greedy people get what you deserve with your McMansions built by illegal labor and values inflated by fake mortgages insured by Fannie Mae. Looks like the beginning of the 1980's crash to me. Just another chapter in the same book. Oh, by the way, do you know who is at the top of the list of politicians receiving campaign donations from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? Try the holly man Obama and his buddy Kerry. Yep, bought and paid for. Do your own research on these two guys'connection to Fannie Mae and you might reconsider who you want to vote for.

An ARM is an Adjustable Rate Mortgage. You can get a very low interest rate, but the rate will fluctuate with the market. Google it, dummies!

So...are we saying that people have NO responsibility to make their own choices? Many of us are tired of taking responsibility for those who will not.

I was gonna lay off you guys for a while, then you haveta go and drag my name into it...

The Clinton Administration strengthened the Community Reinvenstment Act, making it harder for mortgage lenders not to lend to minorities, who are -- as a group -- a bigger credit risk. With not only government's tacit approval, but almost a mandate, the lenders found any way possible to bolster their lending to minorities, including ARMs.

Credit reports mean something -- many of these borrowers couldn't handle the loans, and began to default. The dominoes began to fall, and we are where we are.

One Fannie Mae report singled out one "paragon of nondiscriminatory lending" -- Countrywide. Meanwhile two Democrat Senators -- Dodd and Conrad -- received preferential interest rate loans from Countrywide. Who was one of the CRA's biggest supporters? Democrat Chris Dodd. Who is the biggest recipient of political donations from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac? Barack Obama.

Where do the footprints lead for this mess? Straight to the Democrats.

Best stimulus deal for the American people would be to "excuse" us all from paying ANY income tax at all for the next 3 years. Force the gov't to work on a budget, and tell the banks they must do the same. Most people would be thrown in jail if they robbed people the way these banks/mortgage co. have done.

Anonymous said...

I bought a home during the ARM heyday.

About 5 minutes worth of research would give you ALL the info. you could ever dream of regarding the pratfalls of same.

My qualifying numbers came in easily 100,000 dollars over what a person in my income range would need to spend on a house.

I bought down and with a fair fixed rate.

I'm sorry money doesn't come with instructions and there are so many people in the world who want to separate others from their money, sometimes with no humane consideration toward them.

Money magazine is still a good, simple place to start learning personal finance.

MSN money also has very solid articles on investing with smaller amounts.

It IS harder I believe to make it today than when I got out on my own in the early 80s but, principles are the same.

People see my house and say "You are lucky!"

The harder I work and the more I sacrifice (in some ways) the luckier I get.

They are forgiven, I live in the same country that rotted their hearts and minds so I can understand.

Instead of hating rich people learn from them. I mowed a retired bankers lawn for extra money on my days off from another job and spent as much time on the porch with my ears open and mouth shut than mowing visiting with him.

Take an investments class, the Weatherford campus of WCC used to always have continuing ed classes of some type.

Credit card debt? Cut those things up, get an extra job, find some stuff to buy and sell on craigslist, have a yard sale whatever, to get them payed off. I have 2 cards but, haven't used either in years.

Tarrant County Elections office is hiring right now. The pay is fair for an entry level job and no surprise, this time of year you can get all the hours you want.

Want health insurance? TCs is very good and you'd be surprised how many people turn that temp. job into a good full time one.

There's plenty of seasonal work for the holidays coming up. UPS and Fed Ex are examples that pay well and could become full time if that is needed.

But, that will take time away from my family you say? What if they're homeless because of the "housing fiasco"? How will your time be then? This is what I mean by sacrifice- reasonable ones are made now for a brighter tommorrow.

When I first started out I lived in a car to finish college. Worked 2 full time jobs in the summer and 1 part time, 1 full time during the school year. Bought, repaired and resold pickups (always a market especially at tax rebate time)and other stuff while spending money on what I needed not wanted.

Got a talent for something that interests you? Turn it into a side business...

I'll quit, my point is trying to help people understand the basics of personal finance today is too often like trying to help an overweight person lose weight "Eat LESS, move MORE." they could be correctly told. "Isn't there a shot, or a surgery or a bizarre diet I have no intention of sticking with anyway that I can do instead?" or "Isn't there someone or something else I can find to blame for my problem?"

I guess I'm ranting a bit but, I also hope I might have given somebody, somewhere some ideas and encouragement to help you make it this world.

3:07, That sounds too hard. That's why liberal weenies would rather wait on the government to support them and in their own words keep them down.
