Random Wednesday Morning Thoughts

  • Russian Cheerleaders. Makes me want to grab my hammer and sickle. (Thanks emailer whom I shall not name.)
  • Dallas County government is a mess. The Discovery Channel wants to shoot a documentary inside the Dallas County Jail - a jail that has almost been shut down by the State for being so bad.- and the Sheriff (who is borderline inept) says "sure" because "they told me I had the final say on what footage they could use." Right. Then the County Commissioners say the Sheriff needs their permission before the jail can be opened up to outsiders and asks DA Craig Watkins to tell her so. The DA, who hates the Commissioners, says "Nope. She can do that." So now the Commissioners get a different attorney to go to a judge to try and stop the documentary. (Which gives rise to an interesting Free Speech issue.) Like I said, a mess.
  • And I bet the Sheriff wins that battle. I think there's an obscure statute out there that basically says the Sheriff controls the courthouse and jail
  • Speaking of courthouse politics, I had a battle with a judge in Wise County 15 years ago over the use of a vacant room. I fired off a snotty letter that I later regretted. He still has it and shows it to me occasionally..
  • I've got an RSS Feed Reader set up to grab stuff off the Internets that I'm interested in. There aren't enough hours in the day to read it all. (And for those that aren't familiar with RSS feeds, Google will set you up for free.)
  • The guy who allegedly shot at five cars on the roadways of Dallas suburbs was arrested last night. As horrible as those series of shootings were, I think its odd that he never hit anyone. I wonder if he was really trying.
  • There are times when I think the public is dumb as a box of rocks. Then there are other times when I think I'm as dumb as a box of rocks. Seriously. Maybe it's because VH1 and CSPAN are so close to each other on my channel guide.
  • Offensive New York Yankee crowd. (Warning: Language). That clip, by the way, makes me think the public is as dumb as as the aforementioned box. I can't imagine taking a kid to that stadium.
  • Someone emailed me that if I was surprised there was a female Methodist minister in Bridgeport, then I should check out this week's Bridgeport Index: There are three women who now make up the executive board of the Bridgeport Lions Club.
  • Horrifying fact: This is my 8,067th blog post. Power. Down.
  • There once was an on-the-brink-of-stardom running back for Decatur HS named Devin Godboldt who left the district a few years ago and transferred to a private school in Denton. Whatever happened to him? I found this youtube clip of him but nothing else. I can only suspect he didn't go to college, but I could be wrong.
  • A random event that drives me insane: A predominately white crowd clapping to the beat when someone is singing on stage.
  • You can't imagine some of the posts I refuse to allow to be posted. "In bad taste" doesn't come close to describing some of them.
  • Lindsay Lohan turns 22 today. But that's a hard 22. Although she has kept a fairly low profile lately.
  • I got chastised yesterday for the random scantily clad woman pics that accompany "Random Thoughts." Someone must hate freedom.
  • I was halfway watching the Ranger game last night when I saw a Texas player called out at 3rd even though A-Rod didn't get within a mile of him with the tag. (If you saw it, you'll be saying, "Absolutely right!!! I couldn't believe it!". If you didn't, you'll be saying, "So what?")
  • I cant' decide if "Ian" is a good name for a guy.
  • The first high school steroid drug testing results are in: 2 students out of 10,000 tested positive. Since that testing cost us $3 million, can we now abandon it? There doesn't appear to be a problem.. (But, admittedly, the testing occurred outside of football season.)  Edit: I heard the $3 million figure on WBAP this morning. Edit #2: Also in this story.
  • One of my favorite days: Walking around the campus of the University of Alabama before taking in a football game. And then, foolishly, I decided to catch a night game at the University of Tennessee. (You can see some of those random posts in the middle of this page here.)
  • The local Walmart is out of Baked Nacho Cheese Doritos. A few years back the Baked Cool Ranch Doritos were discontinued (the greatest chips in the history of ever). If they kill the Baked Nacho Cheese, we will have a crisis on our hands.
  • Edit: I'm as sick of the Alvord ISD posts as you are, but the Update is reporting the School Board refused to disclose the financial terms of the "separation agreement" of the superintendent. The Messenger has made an Open Records request.  Just when you think the school board couldn't make any more political blunders, they may have made the biggest one of all. Incredible
  • Edit: This story is the topic on the Mark Davis show this morning. How many of us have an urge to search for the offending photo?

Devin did go to junior college in Kansas to play football. Injury forced him to quit. Heard he was a professional dancer..??? My oldest son was on that team ...probably the most talented team Liberty ever had and yet they still lost the state championship that year. LCS has been to state every year since then and won it last year. son #2 has big fat ring to prove it.

Dont want to brag or nuthin' ..but Liberty is the #1 private school in the state of Texas based on points awarded for competitions in academics, theatre, music, etc and athletics. Just saying....

Are you telling me it costs $300.00 to do a steriod test? $3M/10K

Isn't the test just a urine test? $300 bucks to dip a test strip in a cup of pee. Wow.

Anonymous said...

the public is dumb as a box of rocks. look who represents us.

steroid test are that expensive because beauracrat are normaly who order them.

The sheriff and only the sheriff controls access to the jail.

Basically, the Dallas commissioners are just grinding a political ax. Valdez is a zero, but she is right on this one.

Actually, Barry, it's the Judge's Coordinator that likes to show it to you!! Love ya', Barry.

he is a stripper in dallas. check out his myspace page and you will see for your self

Low Fat Cheddar Cheese or BBQ Pringles are good if you can't find the baked Doritos.

You said "I think its [sic] odd that he never hit anyone." FYI the article states "The 22-year-old man was shot in the hand. [...] A 37-year-old Dallas man was shot in the abdomen while sitting at a red light with his 9-year-old son."

So he did hit at least a couple of them. Just didn't kill 'em, thank goodness.

Mrs. Jarhead went to see a game at Yankee Stadium several years ago and the guys a few rows back sparked up a fatty in the third inning.

Snotty Letter
It only takes the regret of one hastily written, snotty letter sent in the heat of the moment to keep a sensible person from ever again making that mistake. On the rare occasion I write a smack down letter/e-mail I hold it for 24 hours, reread it and make sure it contains words I want, in writing, attributed to me. Like you, I sent my last regrettable snotty letter when I was approximately 30.

New York Yankee Crowd
That video just proves that males have no business gathering in large groups without the supervision of their female significant other.

Devin Godboldt
What do you bet he is not the only "on-the-brink-of-stardom" high school athlete that has and will fade in to obscurity? Too bad more people do not realize a more assured means of success is through academic excellence rather than playing with balls.

Steroid Testing
Another $3 million being pissed off in the War Against Drugs is just a drop in the bucket compared to the TRILLIONS already wasted in an attempt to legislate personal behaviour.

Field trip
Barry...When are you going to take us on another field trip?

His facebook page has decidedly stripper/gay looking promo shots. Sad.

BG..what do you consider "bad taste"? I can't imagine what could be so offensive, would you please tell us (me). some of the shit (jar) that gets posted here made me think anything goes, give us some clues so we can alvoid doing this in the future..thank u very f'n much!!!

IN regards to the Avord mess, one board member explained it this way:
It is a "separation" contract that was negotiated through attnys. rep. both sides. Only the AISD had executed their side of the contract. Once the other party (former Supt.) signed off, the details would be made public. Barry, as an attny. you should know you do not release info. when your client is in negotiations, and ALL public school contracts are open records. So act like a intelligent attny. and quit stirring the pot, for all of our kids sake.

The Casouras girl car car crash? Be careful if you feel you must look. Some of the top gruesome smut sites don't have it because of the suit and high profile nature. If you look for the pics most searches are tied to porn and viruses.
Look at your own risk you silly smut chasers.

Sick of the Alvord post? Yet you often brag about # of hits your blog receives. Barry, can't have it both ways!

Anonymous said...

Seeing what gets through on this blog and realizing the number of comments Barry kills for being over the top, I know I could never have a blog-too much meanness and ugliness.

ALERT!!! Alvord changing their team name and mascott to BULLFROGS.....GEAUX BULLFROGS!!!

Dallas County and city government has been a hopeless mess since I started caring anything about politics 20 years ago. Remember John Wiley Price,Al Lipscomb and Diane Ragsdale?

Tired of Alvord? Barry, give us a spot devoted to Alvord. We aren't thru by a long shot. This way, we can share the joy and those who aren't interested don't have to look.

You have done a great service so far and I can understand those who don't "have a dog in this fight"
irritation.

Help us out.

9:04 You are only missing the point by about a mile. Part of the reason for this to exist is people have a place to exercise their freedom of speech. There are a lot of people who feel they need to be heard on this due to personal stakes. I'm sick of hearing about it myself but,I have no vested interest in the issue.

-Testing EVERY athlete for steroids is probably overkill, and a waste of taxpayers' money. It should be random after this to ensure it keeps the kids honest.
-Don't get me started about Walmart being out of a particular item. Many is the time I found something I liked and bought every time I went in there, only to discover it was no longer available. It's like finding out your favorite hooker has left town. Oops...did I say that out loud?
-I, too, was surprised at the no-tag call on A-rod last night. Makes me think they should start using instant replay. Think it will lengthen an already slow game? Here's a tradeoff solution: outlaw the use of batting gloves. Ever notice how a batter has OCD in between EVERY pitch? He has to step out of the box, and redo the velcro strap on the gloves like he's Rainman or something. The Yank me's catcher Jorge Posada doesn't use batting gloves and he is a pretty good hitter.

I've seen those photos before ~ I think someone emailed them to me. Girl + concrete toll booth @ 100 MPH = probably the most disturbing images you'll ever see.

Not something for those with weak stomachs. It's always shocking to see a human body in a condition other than "human."

My advice: do yourself a favor. Don't look at them.

Well, let's see Barry, Judge Howell must be in possession of that "letter" that comes back to haunt you occasionally and if memory serves me correctly, Howell is still haunted himself by Jean Bishop. I wouldn't want to tangle with that smart lady on any issue.

...and yep, the Sheriff does have the power to assign space in the courthouse. Sounds like folks better smile when he comes in for a visit.

David is a nice guy. Don't think anybody needs to worry (yet).......

Those collision (it was no accident) photographs have been available for ages. Nice to see ABC finally catching up to last year's news.

Honestly, how different is it from the "reality" plays and crumpled cars that are hauled around to scare kids into not drinking? How is it different from going to a junkyard and seeing the cars there? Not everybody survives a collision. The sites have been around for years, rotten.com among others. Ogrish was a big one, but it is gone now. This antiseptic society can't deal with what happens to humans. We'd rather bury them and forget.

If the family was so concerned about others seeing their daughter plastered against a toll booth, perhaps they should have hidden the car keys. What about the person in the Honda she demolished? She showed no concern for others, therefore she should be showed none.

I am glad you will never be in a position to make public policy for the U.S.

Let me help you do a bit of thinking. No society would last very long if the society adopted the same behaviour of the most uncivilized members of the society. Just because a few members of society behave in an uncivilized/inhumane manner does not mean it is in the best interest of the society to behave in the same uncivilized/inhumane manner as the lowest common denominator.

I guess you are one of those people who believe looting/random thuggery is acceptable behaviour for you when other people engage in looting/random thuggery. Your mother must be really proud of you...

imagine the shock of these folks at this public event..the mc announces ,and now ladies and gentlemen, "the national anthem"..everyone facing the flag of the USA with hands on their hearts...and SUPRISE!!! she starts singing the black anthem,,not even newsworthy with the mainstream media. this is kinna like burnin the flag..

Russian cheerleaders > US cheerleaders. God bless the Soviet Union.

10:30 some things are just wrong and should be considered anti-american. but because of the society we've become we're expected to just lay back and take it, and you had better enjoy it or else you will be labeled a racist/sexist/bigot etc. just remember white men, rights that were give by white men can be also taken away by white men..certainly something to consider, i'm sure i'll catch all kinds of hell for this. BRING IT!!!

Talk about misuse of $$$, I heard Alvord had woman high school teacher that coached a JrHigh "B" team in girls basketball and makes over $57,000 and $5500 was the coaches stipend. $5500 for a B team???? - Wonder what the AD makes? Is this the same woman teacher that works during the summer at the school? And we let go the most successful girls coach Alvord ever had and we are replacing him with 3 coaches. Guess that is why Trice left. Guess that is why we have $$ problems?

Wish Devin hadn't left Decatur. We'd have won the state championship when he played if he hadn't have gotten hurt against Gainesville when he nearly broke his neck. That was a great football team to watch. Loved watching him carry the football. We'd have probably won the next year if he hadn't transferred.

Chastised? Is that what you thought I did to you? I'd never chastise you! I was simply utilizing my freedom of opinion about your freedom to post scantily clad women. Freedom is great. I'm all for it... Besides, the women are good role models. And I've been able to pick up several fashion tips. I can't wait to head to Black Creek Lake!

Anonymous said...

can anyone remember who gave women the right to drive, god help us all..

12:07 that is incorrect, the correct answer is white men gave women and blacks the right to vote, as well as many other rights that they thought were god given rights...

I wish i could see the pics of the car without the pics of the girl...I dont think i could handle them and really dont want to see them but the car is another story.

In reference to Barry's last edit on this post about the photos.......perhaps the progressive rock band Tool explains it best in their song "Vicarious".......here's an excerpt:

"Cause I need to watch things die
From a distance,
Vicariously, I
Live while the whole world dies
You all need it too - don't lie."

Anonymous said...

The pics you'll find up with a quick google search don't show the girl just the car wadded up around the toll booth.
arlingtoncardinal.net out of arlington heights il was the first I saw with the safer pics that wasn't tied to porn and viruses.

A friend of mine lost her son in a car accident last year. At one point she commented "Thank God there were no photographers there." I cannot imagine the horror of losing a child. I cannot imagine the horror of having the photos of the child, or the grief of the family, being available for the entertainment of others...

Did you read the Gazette’s take on the Enis drama? What a joke! One story was filled with the usual run-on sentences and bad grammar, and the other one looked like it was written by Trice himself trying to make the UIL violation appear worse than it is. (They never even said what the violation was or what the penalty actually is.) They even had the guts to use a picture of Trice that Enis’ son took after showing their bias against his dad. Aren’t they biting the hand that feeds them? The only news they ever print that is worth trying to read is the articles about the girls program. Now what are they going to print, more month old stories about the Mavericks or the interesting house plans? Sounds like “Slanted terms, almost to the point of slanderous statements” implying that we can actually make since of the trash they call journalism. I agree with the blogger that said the girls should boycott the season……..and the community should boycott the Gazette.

Agreed 8:07. Can't find a better person or coach what AISD has left. I just hope the new Supt. takes a good look at the income and work ethic of the left overs. I guess the days of sleeping in the field house and taking off to fish and work on the wife's kitchen are over. They might actually break a sweat!
