And Then . . . Good Times

And then, yesterday, as I waited for the PVC cement to dry, I laid* down on the grass and took a picture looking straight up.

The past tense of lie is lay.

And then, yesterday, as I waited for the PVC cement to dry, I laid down on the grass and took a picture looking straight up.

Present tense would be lie. Past is lay. Past participle is lain. These uses involve people.

Lay is used in present tense for an object. Laid is used for past tense and past participle.

Barry defiantly laid the snarky memo on the judges desk.

Barry, will you defiantly lay this snarky memo on the judges desk?

Barry is about to defiantly lie naked on the judges desk.

As Barry defiantly lay naked on the judges desk he pondered his future.

Barry had defiantly lain naked on
the judges desk for hours.

I'm not one of those people who gripes about your few mispellings/grammar errors, but I think it is lain. I could be very wrong. Easily.

nevermind, don't post that. It's not lain.

I'm lazy about grammar, so I use rules-of-thumb. If you can substitute the word "put" for the word, it's "laid." If you can't, then it's "lay." (I lay on the ground to take the picture. I laid or put the camera on the ground.)

The same rule works with deciding on "sit" or "set."

At what age do you lay down in the back yard and take a picture of the view. I guess it's one thing to enjoy the view, yet another to take a pic. Barry, where you wearing black dress socks and velcro tenny shoes? Did you have on your Dickies one-piece jumpsuit? That's when you know you are old -if you were wearing any of the above -
