United Way

Ok, I've been strong armed by the powers at be to put the Wise County United Way banner over to the right. They were very pleasant at first but then black sedans began to drive by my home and office. I didn't want to test them. Throw some money at them. They tell me all proceeds are used locally.

Barry, If you see black Suburbans with big sunroofs, you better be REAL,REAL careful!! > Guess who??

ALL of the proceeds? I think you might want to see how much of their proceeds are actually USED and not KEPT by the organization.

My Agency is one of the recipients of the money that United Way collects. United Way does many good things for Wise County!!

It's just another form of voluntary taxation, really. Like the lottery. I stopped giving to the United Way because in the city I was in, I found out some of the money was going to things that just didn't seem right.

My previous employer participated in the United Way campaign and I was a "fair share giver" for many, many years. It's the one charity I never hesitated giving to because you could donate to the charity of your choice and make wise decisions as to how much goes to administrative costs vs. the actual recipients.

12:30, how about just writing a check directly to your favorite charity? Why have United Way skim off some of the money?

8:52 pm; might want to check your facts before spouting off. Keep in mind, this isn't UW of New York. All funds raised locally are kept locally and distributed locally as determined by a volunteer board of local citizens.

5:24...I do. WARM & GRACE get my charity donations as well. I think the United Way and Salvation Army do a lot of good for all our communities during hardships, tragedy & for unfortunate families during the holidays. Sometimes it's nice to donate without a face and United Way is a good way to do that.

Gator 10:12 -- If you donate, why donate and not want someone to know who you are? A donation is a great way to help someone and should make you feel GREAT!

Oh yes, let's all donate so the Boy Scouts can get more $$ to learn how to tie knots. What a scam.

Take a look at your local United Way at www.wisecountyunitedway.org you will find that they serve YOUR COMMUNITITY! For those of you who don't GIVE because you don't understand what it takes to run a not a non-profit you might want to ask questions not just assume you know where the money goes. Thank you United Way for making a difference in Wise County!

9:09 What charity do you suggest? Did you know most of the charities in Wise County are funded by United Way and they don't have the means to advertise and promote a campaign to raise funds....they depend on United Way!

if you take time to look at their web site--it looks to me its

NOT ALL LOCAL!!!!

Maybe Melinda can talk Rottner into kicking another $1000 for some program so worthless the school will not even finance it. Way to go, UW!

I think being blessed enough to donate to those less fortunate than myself is part of doing God's work. It's God's glory, not mine when I do something for others. Therefore, my donations do not need a "face" and I don't need an "attaboy". It does make me feel good that I'm in a position to help others, but taking credit for my good fortune is in my opinion vain.

It isn't all local. The Boy Scout Council in Fort Worth is one agency that benefits. They will tell you that that helps them serve the Scouting program from there, but the bulk of the program is run by the local volunteers. If you like Scouting, then I suggest you give your money to the local troops in Decatur and Bridgeport and help them directly.

The United Way in Wise County does two things essentially. First and foremost it provides an oppurtunity for a banker to get his picture in the paper. Second, it provides a charitable tax deduction to donors. Sure, it helps agencies also but...

The one tactic that UW uses in some areas to fleece working people of their money is sometimes referred to as "fair share" or "5%". Often times this is done during the new hire paperwork process where people are bullied into filling out a donor card, and it is taken out of their check each month. That way the business can claim that they have 100% contributions and the like. I'm quite sure this tactic is being used in WC.

Charitable giving is admirable and if you are good with a bit of corruption in hopes that it reches people in need, then by all means fill out your card, attend the feel good luncheon and sleep well. If however you actually care, then there is no greater satisfaction than giving your time and recources to a cause. The UW doesn't need to get in the way of that.

Well, quit biatchin' and check 'em all out here......maybe.

http://www.charitynavigator.org/

I'm sure there are other evaluators.

This Xmas, I'm thinking about giving here:

http://www.kiva.org

"You too, can be a banker to the poor."

Be patient, the site is busy these days.

I kind of like the thought of loaning some poor person in Cambodia, Vietnam, Azerbaijan or some other foreign place $100 to see if they can make a go of it.

I don't think I will donate to many US agencies until this mess Mr. Bush has put us in is over. We need to quite wasting so much money in Iraq and on the fake war on terror. You know, like, my local VFD got some bucks for that Homeland Security crap, so I think they should have enough dough to fight any fire that might threaten me.....unless they were hot-tied into buying some cool electronic surveillance stuff that really won't work because we are so far out in the boondocks.

P.S. Here, here, 1:27PM - I agree.

Love,
Anonynothing Whatever

To Anonyous 9:30 am: Apparently you know very little about the scouting program. The program is designed to make better citizen of our youth and it promotes physical fitness. Hiking, biking, climbing, ect. It's not all about knots. Nowadays most of the youth that are getting in trouble are bored and have lack of supervision. In the scouting program on the weekends the Boys are out learning new skills. Some of the skills that are learned will help in choosing a career. If a boy goes all the way through the scouting program and gets his Eagle and decides to join the military right out of high school, he will start off making $200.00 more per month then everyone else. The reason being he has already had survival skills, first aide ect.... things that were taught to him in the scouting program. (it also helps get him into a good college because of his leadership training and service hours that they have to give back to their community).

So that being said, Thank You United Way for your support of the scouting programs and all the other youth programs you support. It is for a good cause.

We have too many good causes! That's why we can't pay our own bills! I was in the store, behind a woman whose grocery bill came to 39 plus dollars. She hands over a WIC card, and "bingo bango"... bill is now 8 dollars! That's ridiculous! I'm tired of paying for everyone else's bills (tax here, there and everywhere) when I can't even pay my own!
